Teacher profilesHi, I’m Hilary and I’ve been working at SELC since 1995! Before joining SELC I spent several years teaching and studying in Japan, and I’ve also learned French and recently started studying Spanish, so I understand how difficult it can be for language learners sometimes.

I’ve taught on all the different programs that we offer at SELC. I’m also an Oral Examiner for the Cambridge Speaking Exams, which means that I can give students useful advice for the exam!

I’m now Head Teacher at SELC, so I get to meet all the students and help new students to settle in. It also means that I liaise with all the teachers and other staff to make sure that things run smoothly and that students and teachers are happy. This gives me lots of variety in my job, and that’s great!

Our teachers are all highly qualified and experienced and take part in an ongoing professional development program. SELC has staff with many years’ examining experience for the major international English language tests. SELC students consistently achieve excellent scores in the IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC and Cambridge tests.

Student profiles

After completing theatre studies in Australia, I travelled extensively in North America, Europe, India and Asia. The cross-cultural experiences I gained during this time were invaluable to me when I started my English teaching career in Eastern Europe four years ago. My passion for film and theatre (both as an actor and director) as well as my love of sports have enabled me to make a special contribution to student life at SELC.

I have taught English at all levels, as well as Cambridge, Business and test preparation courses. In addition to my teaching, I currently manage SELC’s library, computer labs and educational technology. At SELC, we have a wide range of resources for our Independent Learning Centre, with sub-titled DVDs and audio readers being particularly popular with our students. Most of all, I enjoy taking students to sport on Friday afternoons and mixing with them at our social gatherings. From my own experience overseas, I know this is an important part of their learning experience in Australia.

SELC - ICMS Business Preparation Program (BPP)

In collaboration with our partner, ICMS Sydney, SELC offers a 13-week course at ICMS Manly, designed to develop the business communication, academic writing, English language and introductory research skills required for entry into ICMS programs.

SELC offers individual counselling for all students if they require:

1. Educational counsellingAn individual counselling service is available in the second week of every term. Each class member has a one-to-one consultation with their teacher regarding their English progress. This session provides opportunities for the teacher to give feedback on each student’s strengths and weaknesses as well as allowing each student to ask questions regarding the best way to meet their individual English requirements.

Students can also make an appointment with the Educational Counsellor for more help and advice on how to make progress in English.

2. Personal counsellingAside from academic counselling, students who study in a foreign country away from their home sometimes need additional support. Bert, our Student Counsellor, is available to assist students with issues that can arise when settling into a new culture.

“For me, one of the best things about studying at SELC was all the great extra activities. There was always something on and I went to a lot of welcome parties, harbour cruise parties and BBQs at the beach with SELC students and teachers. These and the organised soccer and beach volleyball games are a great way to relax and make friends outside the classroom. I had the time of my life!”
