Today we celebrate the First Sunday of Advent. This Sunday marks the beginning of another Church year. As we look to commemorate Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, we are asked to prepare ourselves for the coming of the Lord. The early weeks of Advent continue the theme of Christ’s second coming and encourage us to be ready and not fall asleep. Later in the month the readings will move to Jesus’ first coming and the story we all know as Christians. St. Paul in his letter to the Thessalonians asks all of us to conduct ourselves in a way that is pleasing to God. Paul tells us that we know the instructions, now we just have to put them into practice. We begin our preparation today. This Wednesday we will celebrate our joint Communal Reconciliation Service with St. Kieran. The service begins at 7:00 PM and will be held at St. Agnes. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of the ways we can prepare ourselves for the Christmas celebration. Seeking forgiveness and giving forgiveness prepares the whole community for the coming of Christ. So please join us on Wednesday. The Lenten Communal Reconciliation service will be held at St. Kieran. For those who can’t make the communal celebration there is Fr. John’s Column Advent has a special feeling for me. It was the first week of Advent almost 30 years ago that my brother suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage. He was just short of his 51st birthday. My brother lingered on life support for 30 days ... then joined our mother and countless others in the eternal reign of God. That Advent of 1990 brought our family a long and sometimes excruciating ordeal. What was to come for my brother? Recovery? Prolonged disability? Death? How would his wife, his children, the rest of us face these prospects? We were not prepared for what was unfolding. We were engulfed in medical problems, financial challenges, constant decisions, mixed-up feelings and an overcast of uncertainty. The season of Advent that year was a season of waiting with no evident answers, struggling with unrelenting difficulties and hoping for a resolution when we did not know what that really might be. Advent — if we pay attention — can be complex and has been like that for much of human history. It is easy for us to see Advent as a wreath with purple candles, familiar hymns of anticipation and, of course, shopping and preparations for Christmas. But Advent is a whole “season” of life, more than just these four weeks. In the first reading, we find hopeful and exuberant words from the prophet Jeremiah. Jeremiah was prophesying about the advent of peace and stability for the Jewish people. They had been struggling in exile after the destruction of Jerusalem generations before. The people had become despondent of ever returning and having a temple again. God calls Jeremiah to proclaim a message of hope. Theirs was a very long season of advent. Yet with mercy and hope proclaimed, they could endure until the eventual restoration of Jerusalem and the coming of the messiah. In Luke’s Gospel, we find Jesus instructing the disciples to prepare themselves (Continued on page 3) Parish Reconciliation Service, Wed @ 7 pm Live Nativity & Tamale Supper Friday 6-8 pm On the Inside... • Fr. John’s Column Continued Continued and those who come after for a further long season of advent. That time will precede the return of Christ. As humankind heads toward the end of the ages, there will be catastrophic signs in the heavens and the seas. Nations will be in turmoil. Jesus says, “People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world. For the powers of heaven will be shaken.” Are we not living in that very season this Advent? What signs do we see in the heavens, on the earth and in the seas? What signs do we see in nations? Or what signs do we see in relations among peoples in the neighborhoods where we live as well as around the globe? Jesus offers us hope. “When these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand.” Finally, we consider the season of Advent in our own lives. Paul says it so well: “May the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we have for you. [May that love] strengthen your hearts, to be blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus.” Challenges, conflicts, decisions, uncertainties —these things and many others will be part of our season during this Advent. Giving every person selfless love may seem out of the realm of possibility at times. But with the hope offered by Jeremiah and with the redemption brought by Jesus Christ, we can live in the strength of God in our own season of Advent, however long that may be. Jesus’ words to us are, “Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Reconciliation at both St. Agnes and St. Kieran at 4:00 PM every Saturday. This Friday we will celebrate our Living Nativity and Posada at St. Agnes. The Posada will begin at 6:30 and the telling of the Christmas story by our high school students will be presented at 7 and 7:30 PM. Visit the barnyard ani-mals from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. This year we once again will be hosting a meal to raise money for the event. We will have tamales and pizza for sale in Isaiah Hall from 6:00-7:30 PM. Last year we ran out of food, but this year our school parents, headed up by Mrs. Rangel, Mrs. Bravo-Gutierrez, Mrs. Vargas and Mr. Cuin are doubling the tamales to over 900 and Paul Kapocious has upped the pizzas as well. There will also be pinatas filled with candy and treats for the children in the hall as well. Please join us for this beloved tradition as we begin our parish Christmas celebrations. Next Sunday, December 9, St. Kieran invites every-one to Crawford hall for breakfast with Santa. A great break-fast will be served and the jolly old elf “Santa” will be there as well. The breakfast runs from 8:00 AM-12:30 PM. Tick-ets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Thanks to everyone who has provided food for our food drive. Respond Now and Catholic Charities are grate-ful for all of your donations. The food bin will stay up until Christmas. The Giving Trees have gone up and we encourage you to take a tag! All gifts must be returned by December 9. Once again thank you for your generosity. As we come to the end of the year I ask you to be as generous as you can in your support of our parish. St. Agnes is our spiritual home and provide sacraments, catechesis, education, and hope in difficult times. We want to continue to be a part of our community, but that only happens with your support. ThankYou. Finally, next weekend there will be the special col-lection for the Retirement Fund for Religious. Do you re-members the priests and sisters who were with you growing up, who hopefully made a positive difference in your life? This collection will help retirement communities who serve the retired religious me n and women who have served all of us. Please be as generous as you are able.

    Blue Christmas-December 16th

For some people the idea of a ‘merry’ Christ-mas is beyond imagining. The death of a loved one, brokenness in family relationships, coping with the loss of a job, living with a lim-iting disease – all these human situations make holiday gatherings painful and not an easy occasion for celebration. Sunday, December 16th , marks the Winter Solstice - the longest time of darkness during the year. In some ways, the struggle with darkness and grief faced by those living with loss is also a struggle to find a reason to have hope that God can truly be ‘Emmanuel’ and with us still. It is because of this very human truth and reality that our Church will be open and available for prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament that Sunday, December 16th from 1 to 2:00 pm together with a simple prayer service of comfort and consolation. If this will be an es-pecially ‘blue’ Christmas for you, consider stopping by and creating a time of peace for yourself in the silence, recalled memories, and shared prayer of this community. Advent Evening Prayer

We invite you attend Advent Evening Prayer on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM on December 12 & 19. December 5 is the Parish Reconciliation Service. Advent Evening Prayer is a peaceful, reflective way to end a busy day. The service takes about 20 minutes...let’s all take a deep breath and enjoy the season and Advent Evening Prayer.

Family Ornament We invite you to continue the tradition of the St. Agnes Family Ornament. Each year fami-lies and individuals are invited to make an ornament for our family trees in church. In ten, twenty, or thirty years from now, our grandchildren and great-grandchildren can look at the ornaments made by their family members at St. Agnes. The ornament may be as simple or fancy as you wish—please include your family name and the year on your ornament. Please place in basket in the church entrance no later than December 23rd...time to trim the trees!
