Trees and plants are necessary for theexistence of all creatures, including humanbeings. They fulfil food and shelter needs ofnot only humans but also birds and animals. We can eat fruits by growing fruit trees. Moreover, growing teak and other hardwoodtrees can contribute to the national economicdevelopment.

Trees and plants absorb carbon dioxideand thus make the climate neither too hot nortoo cold. Therefore, the Ministry of Forestry istaking measures for systematic conservationof forests, special teak plantations and extensionof plantations in watershed areas.

Being a country where teak treesnaturally grow, Myanmar has a vast area ofland covered with teak trees. The Bagomountain ranges are a region where teak treesthrive well, afforestation work is being carriedout by laying down plans to keep the regionalways green.

Also in the 13 arid districts, the task forgreening the environment is being done withthe cooperation of the people. As a result, teakplantations are thriving well in the forestreserves in Nay Pyi Taw Tatkon, Nay Pyi TawLewe, and Taungdwingyi townships.

Now that the rainy season has set in,tree-planting ceremonies are being held invarious regions. Fruit trees as well as shadetrees are being grown in Nay Pyi Taw Lewetownship and other townships in variousstates and divisions.

Hardwood trees, including teak, areimportant for national economy. Not only that, they can keep urban and rural areas green andpleasant and the cycle of the season in regularorder. Therefore, the government and thepeople should boost cooperation in theconservation and yearly afforestation work.

Bombing of minibus in Shiitearea kills nine

WASHINGTON, 9 June —The Pentagon acknowl-edged on Monday thatthere were “problems”with the way US forcesconducted a bombing raidin Afghanistan that pro-voked outrage over civil-ian casualties.

“There were someproblems with some tac-tics, techniques and pro-cedures or... the way inwhich close air supportwas supposed to havebeen executed in thiscase,” said Pentagon presssecretary Geoff Morrell, who sat in on the briefing.

The bombing height-ened tensions betweenAfghans and foreigntroops over civilian casu-alties. Afghan PresidentHamid Karzai has urgedan end to US air strikes in

his country, but Washing-ton has rejected his call.

Afghan officials putthe civilian death tollfrom the Farah bombingas high as 140. AnAfghan human rightswatchdog put the total at97 and said no more thantwo Taleban fighterswere killed. The US mili-tary has said 20-35 civil-ians were among 80-95people killed, most ofthem Taleban fighterswho used the civilians ashuman shields.—Internet

Japan considers flu aidto Latin America

MEXICO CITY, 9 June—Japan is considering aid forthe Latin American nations hit by the A/H1N1 flu vi-rus, visiting Japanese Vice Foreign Minister said hereon Monday.

“We are very willing to cooperate as needed,”Shintaro Ito said at a news conference together withhis Mexican counterpart Lourdes Aranda.

It said he had met with Mexican Health MinisterJose Angel Cordova Villalobos earlier on Monday toask for more details on how to handle the epidemic.

According to World Health Organization data, thenew strain of A/H1N1 flu, which has killed 106 peo-ple and infected 5,717 others in Mexico, has spread to73 countries, infecting 25,288 people.

Japan, which has reported 410 infections and nodeaths, imposed visa restrictions on Mexicans shortlyafter the disease was first publicly reported on 23 April.

“We took those measures when we did not knowhow dangerous the flu might have been,” Ito said. “Asa result, no Mexican had fallen ill during visits to Ja-pan, we wish to have the understanding of the Mexi-cans.”

Mexico, which has the single largest number of fludeaths, has seen a fatality rate of around 2 percent.

The United States, which has the highest number ofconfirmed infections at 13,217, has seen 27 deaths ora rate of 0.2 percent. Aranda said President FelipeCalderon had planned a visit to Japan next year, buthad not yet set an exact date.—Xinhua

BONN, 9 June—TheUnited Nations climate talksshould adhere to the princi-ple and basic framework ofthe UN Framework Con-vention on Climate Changeand the Kyoto Protocol, saidLi Gao, acting chief of theChinese delegation to thesecond round of the talksthis year.

“The meeting has greatsignificance, but no substan-tial progress has been madeso far” as major developedcountries lack political will

to push the negotiationforward according to the“Bali Road Map,” Li toldXinhua in a recent interview.

The second round of theUN climate talks opened inBonn, Germany on 1 Juneand will last until 12 June. The main task of this roundis to discuss and prepare keynegotiating texts for the Co-penhagen meeting in De-cember.

“Developed countrieshave neither enough activeresponses to proposals from

developing countries aboutemission-cut target by 2020,nor interests in providingfunds and technologies tohelp developing countriesadapt to climate change,” Lisaid.

Some developed coun-tries are tardy in providingemission-cut target, whilesome developed countries’targets are much lower thanthe requirements of the in-ternational community, Lisaid.

Li took the UnitedStates as an example, say-ing its target is onlyequivalent to the 1990level. However, the UNFramework Conventionon Climate Changerequired developedcountries to realize thattarget in 2000, whichmeans the United Stateshas delayed its obligationunder the Convention for20 years.

WASHINGTON, 9 June—Asuperconducting sheet oflead only two atoms thick, the thinnest superconduct-ing metal layer ever cre-ated, has been developedby physicists at the Uni-versity of Texas at Austin, the university said in apress release on Monday.

Dr Ken Shih, the Janeand Roland Blumberg Pro-fessor in Physics and col-leagues reported the prop-erties of their supercon-

Superconductors areunique because they canmaintain an electrical cur-rent indefinitely with nopower source. They areused in MRI machines, particle accelerators, quan-tum interference devicesand other applications.

The district court refused to summon three of the four witnesses nominatedby the accused. Yangon Division Court confirmed the decree delivered by thedistrict court as there is no need to argue about the nomination of witnesses U WinTin and U Tin Oo regarding the character.

However,Yangon Division Court issued an order for the district court to summon andexamine legal expert Daw Khin Moe Moe as a defence witness in order to hearthe case more thoroughly.—MNA

French court fines GDF Suezover deadly gas blast

Mulhouse (France), 9 June—A French court finedenergy giant GDF Suez 232,500 euros (321,600 USdollars) on Monday for manslaughter and causinginjury in a gas explosion that killed 18 people in 2004.

The blast, which tore through a five-storey buildingin the eastern city of Mulhouse, also injured 16 people.A broken pipe under a street caused gas to pour into thebasement before exploding. The pipe was made of abrittle type of cast iron which GDF had pledged toreplace in all its pipes by 2000 but it later changed thatpolicy.

“Abandoning the policy of replacing grey castiron, when trade unions had repeatedly underlined thedangers of it, constitutes a fault,” judge ChristineSchlumberger said in the court ruling.

The court denounced “the absence of rigour andchecks in the monitoring of pipes”, but it did not allowsenior GDF executives to be tried as defendants asrequested by the victims’ families.

Gas company GDF, which merged with utilitySuez last year, was fined 200,000 euros in 2006 overa similar case in which 11 people were killed in1999.—MNA/Reuters
