Year Level Awards
Academic Honours:Awarded to a student who, using her grade point average or Diploma score, is in the top 1-4% across all subjects for which she is entered.
Academic High Distinction: Awarded to a student, who, using her grade point average or Diploma score, is in the next 4-6% across all subjects for which she is entered.
Academic Distinction:Awarded to a student, who, using her grade point average or Diploma score, is in the next 6-8% across all subjects for whichshe is entered.
Top in Subject and Subject Excellence AwardsUsing a subject ratio of 1 to 30 for NCEA subjects the first student will receive the top in subject award and the remaining students within the ratio will be awarded subject excellence.
The IB Diploma curriculum is made up of six subject groups: studies in language and literature; language acquisition; individuals and societies; sciences; mathematics; and the arts.These subject awards recognise the academic success of students in each of the subjects within these groups(some subjects may have no eligible student).
Arts AwardAwarded to a student who has shown a high level of commitment and achievement in her areas of the Arts.
Sports AwardAwarded to a student who has shown excellence in ability, achievement and personal commitment to her chosen sports.
Principal’s Awards
Up to eight Principal’s Awards are awarded to students, who through their dedication and contribution to their studies and to others have demonstrated:• Reliability and commitment • Creative thinking and innovation• Resilience and persistence in accepting challenges• Personal excellence• Demonstration of the School Motto “Ut Serviamus”

Old Girls’ League Awards
Mary Pulling was our Founding Headmistress 1904 – 1926. The Mary Pulling Awards recognise students who show potential and an outstanding contribution to the School in a wide range of areas. Students currently in Years 11 and 12 who will be continuing their education at the School next year are eligible for these $1,000 awards. In making the selection, academic ability is a consideration, but the likely contribution of the student to the School is the deciding factor.
Mary Pulling Award Year 11 Mary Pulling Award Year 12 The Ethel Sandford Bursary for MusicEthel Sandford was Headmistress 1926 – 1932. She was noted for her energy and determination as well as musical abilities.
Board Scholarships
Academic Scholarships Awarded to the top academic students in Years 11 and 12, these scholarships have increased in value to a 25% reduction in tuition fees at Diocesan School for the following year.
Academic Scholarships – Year 11 Academic Scholarships – Year 12
Arts Scholarship This award is presented to a student in Years 9-13. This is a one-year scholarship in which the recipient will be awarded a 25% reduction in tuition fees at Diocesan Schoolfor the following year.The recipient of this scholarship demonstrates an exceptional level of skill in their chosen discipline and has had success at National level. This student displays a positive attitude and is fully involved in the Diocesan Arts programme, including representing the school in competitions and events, demonstrating a commitment to the wider arts culture withinthe school.
Sports Scholarship This award is presented to a student in Years 9-13. This is a one-year scholarship in which the recipient will be awarded a 25% reduction in tuition fees at Diocesan School for the following year.
The recipient of this scholarship is an elite athlete who has been selected for a representative team and had success at National level. This student displays a positive attitude and is fully involved in the Diocesan Sports programme, demonstrating a commitment to both their sport and the wider sport culture within the school.
Special Awards Year 11-13
National Art Supplies Award for Visual ArtsNational Art Supplies award a prize for each year level for achievement in art. They provide the prizes in the form of art materials.
Heritage Foundation Dio Arts AwardFormerly known as The Friends of Music Awards, a group spearheaded by former Head of Music, Mrs Leonie Lawson.
Whaea Val Trophy for Year 11 Te Reo Māori Val Boyes taught music at Diocesan 1980 – 1986 and Te Reo Māori 1986 – 2004.
Fiona Young Cup for Original WritingFiona Gameson (Young) was a student at Diocesan 1971 – 1977 who was totally blind; her only aids were Braille machines. Fiona was a high achiever in English and Languages; she gained a National Scholarship in 1977 and went on to study at Oxford. Fiona Young and her parents presented this cup in 1978. Heritage Foundation Patricia France Award for Literacy in Fine ArtsPatricia France (1911-1995) attended Diocesan School for Girls for several years in the 1920’s. She was known for her captivating and impressionistic paintings, which were figurative, semi-abstract and with a deeply delicate use of colour. Patricia established herself as a successful and productive painter in the 1960’s and 70’s. This award has been made possible by funds raised by Dio Arts, with recognition to Sue Maasland and Fay Cropper, who coordinated an exhibition of Patricia France’s works in 2010.
Rosey Eady Prize for Year 12 Photography Rosey Eady attended Diocesan 1958 – 1970 and is a passionate supporter of the Arts at Diocesan. Rosey chaired Dio Arts for 10 years and is now the Patron of Dio Arts and the Grand Circle campaign for the Diocesan Arts Centre.
EY- Excellence and Innovation in the Visual ArtsEY have a strong relationship with Diocesan and wish to recognise artistic excellence through this award. The prize of $1500, recognises a Year 11 or 12 student who displays Excellence and Innovation in the Visual Arts.
English Language Award for Learners of English as another languageThis award is given to an English Language Learner who has been at Diocesan for at least two years. This student has consistently shown a high level of motivation to expand her knowledge and skills. She has also shown resilience in embracing change and achieved to the best of her abilities.
Heritage Foundation Elizabeth Webb Memorial Prize for WritingElizabeth Webb, taught English at Diocesan 1981 – 1983 and 1986 – 1987 before her tragic death. The recipient of this award is the top writer from Years 11, 12 or 13.
Senior Ko Tātou Cup:This is a new cup this year. The class of 2020 donated this cup so we would have a formal recognition of the qualities of Ko Tātou . The award has been decided after considering the student nominations.
Heritage Foundation Dorothy Shrewsbury Bursary Awarded to the Top Academic Student in Year 12Miss Shrewsbury was Headmistress 1951 – 1966. Miss Dawn Jones, Principal at the time, established this Bursary in 1983 with funds raised at the 80th Jubilee Concert.
Academic Subject Awards
Vancouver Award for Outstanding Performance in Theoretical and Practical Physics in Year 12 and 13. This prize was endowed by an Old Girl who wishes to remain anonymous but is passionate about ensuring that science (and physics) is valued and embraced. In 1960, a group of seven girls lobbied successfully to have a physics teacher appointed (at the time science options were limited). This heralded the beginning of new career and study pathways opening for girls that are embraced by many of our aspiring scientists, physicists and doctors today.
Year 13 NCEA Subject AwardsAccounting AwardFor overall excellence across the Accounting course.
Photolife Art Design AwardFor creative thinking in design.Kindly sponsored by Photolife Studios.
Turnbull Cup for Senior Art Jennifer Green (Turnbull) attended Diocesan 1980 – 1983. This award is presented for Yr13 Excellence in Visual Arts (Painting and or Print).
Business Studies AwardFor overall excellence across the Business Studies course.
The Alastair Fleming Memorial Classical Studies AwardAlastair Fleming was a passionate teacher of Classical Studies and Latin at Diocesan from 2000 until 2004, before moving to become Dean of Form Three at his alma mater, Auckland Grammar. He passed away suddenly in 2010. Alastair is remembered fondly as a teacher who loved the ancient world and who encouraged his students to recognise their potential.

The Kim Percy Award for Level 3 Chemistry Kim Percy (neé Barty) attended Diocesan 1967– 77, and was one of three Barty sisters at the School. She enjoyed her school days, excelling in the Sciences especially. Kim passed away in March 2017. The Barty and Percy families present the Level 3 Chemistry award in memory of Kim, honouring her time at Diocesan as both a student and mother of Anna Percy.

Poulgrain Prize for Modern Languages This prize was endowed by the Poulgrain family. Margaret Purdie (Cecily Poulgrain) attended Diocesan in 1944 and June Leyland (Dorothy Poulgrain) 1940 – 1941. Their father Mr C H Poulgrain served on the School Council 1943 – 1960.
The Win Lewis Lamp for Latin This prize was presented by Janice Cheeseman, a Latin Teacher at Diocesan 2002 – 2006. The award was named after Win Lewis who taught Latin and Divinity at Diocesan 1958 – 1979.
Lindsay Cooper Cup for LatinThis cup was donated by Lindsay Cooper, a Latin and Classics teacher at Diocesan 1986 – 2000.

Sally Symes Award for Excellence and Innovation in Photography Sally Symes was an art and photography teacher at Diocesan 1986 – 1993.
The Anna Elvery Award for Excellence in Physical Education Anna Elvery attended Diocesan 1997 – 2003. This cup was named in her honour after she received top in New Zealand for Scholarship Physical Education in 2003.
Erina Murphy Memorial Prize Awarded for all round ability and achievement in Te Reo Māori and Māori Culture presented by the Murphy Whanau in memory of Erina Murphy who taught at Diocesan School.

IB Diploma Learner Profile AwardThis is awarded to a student in Year 13, who, throughout the two years of the Diploma, has consistently demonstrated the attributes of the IB Learner Profile.The IB Learner Profile can be considered as a map of a lifelong journey in pursuit of international-mindedness. It aims to develop active, compassionate and lifelong learners and to prepare students to make exceptional contributions both at school and beyond.
The IB mission is to encourage students to be Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced, and Reflective, thus educating the whole person for a life of active, responsible citizenship.

Angela Edgington Cup for Excellence in Historical ResearchAngela Edgington taught history at Diocesan 1981 – 2002. The cup was gifted to the school to reward achievement and research skills in history. Angela recognised that these skills were important not only for history, but for all future studies.
Heritage Foundation Perdita Barclay Prize for OriginalResearch in GeographyPerdita Barclay taught Geography at Diocesan 1985 – 2001. A committed and dedicated geographer, she established this award to encourage high quality research in Geography.
Heritage Foundation Cropper Prize for Senior ArtAmanda, Susan and Annabel Cropper attended Diocesan 1982 – 1989. Their parents were keen supporters of the School and endowed a prize for Senior Art in 1990.
New Zealand Institute of Physics Award for Outstanding Contribution to Year 13 PhysicsThis award recognises a Year 13 student who has made a significant and sustained classroom contribution to the learning of Physics throughout the year. One such prize is available annually to a school where a physics teacher is a member of NZIP.
Philosophy, Religion & Ethics Award For the Senior Student who has shown excellence in creativity, critical thinking and sensitivity. This Award was donated by Jocelyn Armstrong, a Religious Studies teacher at Diocesan 1997 – 2007. Jocelyn is also a Diocesan Old Girl.
Service AwardAwarded to a Year 13 student who demonstrates a high level of engagement in service within the School and/or wider community.
Heritage Foundation Beale Awards for Service to the School Prizes endowed by the Beale family to provide two prizes annually, each awarded for Service to the School.
Grayson Cup for Leadership and InitiativeWas presented by Sarah Thompson (Grayson 1984 – 1990) and her family in 1990. The cup is presented to a Year 13 student who has not held a major school office, but who has shown the qualities of leadership and initiative.
Lawson Cup for Excellence and Commitment in MusicLeonie Lawson taught Music 1969 – 1999, and was Head of Department 1986 – 1995.
Arts Awards
The David Gordon Cup for Commitment and Excellence in the ArtsThis cup was kindly donated by David Gordon. He was the Head of Music and then Diocesan’s first Performing Arts Director 1996-2012. It is awarded to a student who not only achieves at a very high level in her chosen field but is always involved in supporting, motivating and encouraging others.
The Rosey Eady Cup This cup, kindly donated by Rosey Eady, identifies a special student who makes a difference in the world of the Arts, who is visionary and has the drive to make things happen.
Averill Award for Services to Performing ArtsThis Award commemorates Archbishop Alfred Walter Averill, Bishop of Auckland February 1914 - March 1940, and Archbishop of New Zealand 1925-1940. Archbishop Averill was a frequent visitor to Diocesan and is particularly remembered for consecrating the nave of Chapel of Our Glorified Lord in 1922, and the completed Chapel in 1927. This prize is awarded to a student who shows a level of commitment and perseverance above and beyond just being involved.
The Imogen Wells Award for Outstanding Performance in the ArtsImogen Wells was a student at Diocesan from 2006 - 2011. This award is In recognition of Imogen’s love of the Arts her father, Richard Wells, sculpted the Bronze award.
Sports Awards
The Vicki Hearfield Cup Awarded in memory of Vicki Hearfield, a former Director of Sport at Dioceasn. When Vicki joined in 1989 she instituted the Sports Awards and the Awards Dinner at which the sporting achievements of our students are recognised. Vicki had great respect for students who showed an exceptionally high level of initiative, enthusiasm and passion for their chosen sports. The Hearfield Award recognises this and is presented each year to a student who has demonstrated these qualities.
Allison Roe Award for Service to SportThis award is presented each year to a student who has contributed to Diocesan Sport as an athlete and a leader over their secondary school years. Allison Roe (Deed) is a Diocesan Old Girl. Allison Roe’s marathon career reached its peak in 1981, when she won both the BAA Boston and New York City Marathons, the latter in a world-record 2:25:29. Although best known for her marathon success, the versatile Allison also set a world record for 20 km and won the New Zealand Cross-Country Championships. Not content to restrict herself to running, Allison also won NZ Championships in Triathlon and the Cycling Team Time Trial.
Del Hooper Award for Outstanding Individual Sporting AchievementDonated by former Head of Physical Education, Del Hooper, to acknowledge a student who has excelled in her individual sport on a world stage. The award recipient may represent sports that Diocesan does not offer on a normal team basis and thus she has had to go the extra mile to participate and succeed.
Barbara Kissling CupAwarded to the Sportswoman of the Year. Barbara Kissling was a Diocesan student 1946 – 1951. She was an outstanding sportswoman, featuring across a range of sports, and was Neligan House Captain and a School Prefect. In 1951, she presented the school with a cup for “The best all round games person’. The cup was first awarded the following year in 1952 to Mary MacDonald.
Dame Rosie and Michael Horton PrizeDame Rosie and Michael Horton have had a long association with Diocesan through the education of their daughter and granddaughters. They have generously donated this prize which will be awarded annually to a year 13 student who, despite challenges, has succeeded in her schooling and in the wider life of the school. The prize will support her as she leaves Diocesan, determined to make a difference.
Old Girls’ League Eliza Edwards Memorial Award
Miss Edwards was the third Headmistress at Diocesan 1933 – 1950. She was a highly capable and well educated woman having a bachelor’s degree from NZ and a master’s degree from Oxford. She was a devout Anglican who held the School together through both the Great Depression and the Second World War. This award was established by the Old Girls’ League in 1982 using funds remaining from the Chapel porch windows, also given in Miss Edwards’ memory. Their intention was to reward a student who ‘exemplified the high personal and moral standards Miss Edwards had expected of her girls’. For several years the recipient has been awarded a silver rose bowl, an object which signifies a long history with the Old Girls’ League. However the League has now commissioned a bronze sculpture by artist and Old Girl, Vicki Savage of a rosebud in a vase. This sculpture was awarded for the first time in 2013 and will continue to be awarded for this prestigious prize.
Awarded to a student leaving the School who throughout her schooling has contributed to many school activities, shown high personal standards and has exhibited the qualities inherent in the foundation of the School -‘Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Goodness, Kindness, Humility, Faithfulness and Self-Control’.
