PURPOSE OF THIS EVENING► Review milestones of IB Year One

► Discuss milestones of IB Year Two Assessment Plan

► Provide overview of CAS & Extended Essay

► Provide overview of STEM Practicum Plan

► Share information regarding IB Program Registration & Scale of Fees

INTERNAL VS. EXTERNAL ASSESSMENTS

► Internal Assessments (IA’S)A. Occur in every course between Dec ‘17 and March ‘19 Ex: English IOP’s – December ’17, Physics IA’s - May ‘18B. IA’s are 15-40% of final IB score depending on the courseC. Submission of IA’s are handled by Mr. Sheehan

► External Assessments (EA’s)A. EA’s are seated exams in May 2019 (1-3 EA’s per course)B. Expect EA’s to start the first full week of May 2019C. EA schedule is determined by IB & released this summerD. Participation in EA’s excuses students from senior finalsE. Some EA’s are done internally (WA’s, TOK Essays)

REVIEW OF IB YEAR ONE ASSESSMENTS

► Internal Assessments completed by the end of Year One: Literature HL/SL IOP (December), Biology HL IA (May), Physics HL/SL IA (May), TOK Presentation (May)

► External Assessments completed by the end of Year One: Literature HL/SL Written Assignment (April/May)

► Group 4 Project - Science focused collaborative project completed by all Year One students

OVERVIEW OF IB YEAR TWO ASSESSMENTS► Every course has at least one IA to complete before the end

of the course. Any course that did not complete the required IA, will complete it between September and March.

► Benchmarks are set up over a period of weeks leading up to final completion.

► Some IA’s act as Year Two midterms just as some acted as Year 1 midterms (English IOP)

EARNING AN IB DIPLOMA► An IB score must have been awarded for each of the six IB Diploma

subjects, ToK, and the Extended Essay. ► CAS requirements must be met. ► Student must have a score of D or higher in both TOK and the Extended

Essay. ► Student must earn at least 24 total points. (45 total points possible)

✓ The student must earn a total of at least 12 points in HL subjects (for candidates who register for four HL subjects, the three highest HL grades will count toward this total).

✓ Students who take 3 HL and 3 SL subjects must earn at least 9 points total in the SL classes.

✓ Students who take 4 HL and 2 SL subjects must earn at least 5 points total in the SL classes.

✓ The student must earn a 2 or higher in all subjects (no scores of 1). ✓ There may be no more than two scores of 2, overall. ✓ There may be no more than three scores of 3 or lower, overall.

CREATIVITY, ACTIVITY, SERVICE (CAS)▸ CAS is meant to enrich student lives by allowing them a chance to grow

through experiences creatively, via creativity, activity, and service. Student routinely update their CAS accounts with these experiences.

▸ The CAS Experience begins the first day of Year One and continues through the spring of Year Two.

▸ Students demonstrate completion of learning outcomes through individual experiences chosen by the student.

▸ Students are required to log their experiences using the Managebac system by including evidence of their participation in events and reflections on new learning that took place as a result of the experience.

▸ Students participate in three interviews with the CAS Coordinator over the 18 month period

▸ CAS participation must be continuous over the 18 month time period to remain eligible for IB diploma

CAS LEARNING OUTCOMES▸ Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

▸ Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

▸ Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

▸ Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

▸ Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

▸ Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

▸ Students show awareness of the consequences of choices and actions in planning and carrying out CAS experiences.

CAS Project▸ Two or more students plan and initiate something new

for them over the course of at least a month▸ Proposal approval needed

Graduation Project - non-diploma candidates only▸ 40 hour commitment

CAS/Grad Project Fair▸ Showcase of all projects during spring of senior year

EXTENDED ESSAY - due 1/11/19

I. EE OVERVIEWA. An independent, student-driven assignmentB. 4,000 word essay of original work requiring about 40 hours of workC. Student chooses the subject area, topic, and research question

D. A passing grade is needed to be eligible for the IB Diploma E. Not a requirement for a non-IB Diploma student F. The EE is externally graded by IB Examiners all over the world

II. SUPPORT STRUCTURES A. Every student is assigned a faculty advisor by March 1st of Year One

B. Students have three mandatory reflective sessions with their advisor (May/June, September/October, January)C. Senior Pathways will delay start until the second MP providing 4 periods per cycle in the first MP to work on EE, CAS, and college essaysD. Tutorial modules / published handbook with due dates onlineE. All student/advisor communications occur in the Managebac systemF. Email [email protected] if you would like data from past years

REGISTERING FOR THE IB DIPLOMA PROGRAM‣ Registration will take place in August internally during revision

periods with all students (Diploma & Certificate)‣ The IB Organization requires the following of all IB students:

A. Registration Fee (2017): $172.00 one time feeB. Course Fees (2017): $119.00 per courseC. Payments will be broken into seven payments on

payforit.net due over several monthsD. A letter explaining the fees and the payment process will

be sent out via email in MarchE. Registration occurs in school with all studentsF. Changes to Registration after November 1st will incur

additional feesG. Fees are required of all students (Diploma &

Non-diploma)
