THE BIG IDEA | 10 Minutes

● Say: Welcome to Kids’ Club, we’re so glad you’re here! We want this to be a safe and fun place for you. To do that, let’s all commit to doing a few things:

○ Show respect to each other○ Listen when someone else is speaking○ Have fun!

● Say: Today is a super special day, because we’re doing The Journey! The Journey is where EVERYONE at Crossroads–kids AND adults–all get to hear and experience the same series. And this Journey is about….PLAY and PURPOSE!

● Say: Raise your hand if you like to play and have fun?! Me too, and guess what? God loves play and fun too. He actually WANTS us to play, because it’s how he wired us to be! In fact, we can even spend time WITH God when we play, like here in Kids’ Club. So here’s our big idea:

● Slide: We’re made to play!● Say: God actually created us to play, isn’t that cool? He doesn’t JUST want

us to eat and sleep and go to school and work. He wants us to spend time with each other doing the things we love. He makes each of us special, with different likes and dislikes, and different ways of playing and learning!

● Ask: Do you guys think JESUS liked to play? I bet so! Let’s check out a video of some kids talking about how they think Jesus liked to play...

● Video: Kid Driven Content / How Did Jesus Play?● Ask: Do you agree with them? What do you think Jesus might have done for

fun? (Let kids share.) Luckily, we actually KNOW some of the things Jesus liked to do, because the Bible tells us! Let’s watch a video to hear about all the ways that Jesus is a lot like us. Because even though he’s God, he was also human.

● Video: God’s Story / Jesus Was Like Us● Say: I love thinking about how Jesus might have played games and had fun

with his friends. Why do you think Jesus came to earth and lived like us? Why was that important? (Let kids share.)

● Say: I think you’re right. Since Jesus was like us, he understands what it’s like to BE us! He knows what it’s like when you’re hurt, or mad, or sleepy, or silly. He experienced ALL of it.

● Say: Today, we’re going to spend time just having fun and playing, because even though it might not SEEM like it, when you play, you’re actually learning things and getting to know each other and developing your brain! It’s GOOD for you! So let’s get started.

Goal: Teams take turns and throw “trash” balls into a trash can to gain points for their team!● Set up for each team:

○ Give each kid 3 pieces of paper, and let kids crumple them up into paper “trash” balls.○ Set out a trash can (plastic bin), and lay down two taped lines on the ground, at

increasing distances from the trash can. The closest tape line would be worth one point, the next is two points, etc.

● How to play:○ Let each kid on a team take turns and shoot a crumpled paper ball into the “can”. ○ Let them start at the first tape line and try to get a point for the team.○ Once every kid in a group goes once, they will have a chance to go again and start at the

second tape line, to score more points. This gives every kid a chance to participate, but does not put pressure on an individual, since the score is a group score.

○ Continually empty the trash can for kids to throw back into it.○ For an extra challenge:

■ As a group, decide how many point you want to try and score as a TEAM, not just individually. A good goal is two times the number of kids in a group (for example, a group of 10 kids could have a goal of 20 points).

■ To make it more silly, have kids do a funny action WHILE throwing their ball in the trash (ex: spinning around, hopping, closing their eyes, etc.)

● Collect trash balls and put in bin for next service.

Goal: Let kids create their own straw and tape towers, and see how creative they can get!● Have kids find a partner (if there’s an odd kid, pair up with them yourself, or help them to make a

group of three).● Give each pair 10 straws, and set out rolls of tape and scissors.● Tell kids that we’re going to PLAY by building and creating a tower creation! On your mark, let

each pair work together to create a tower by connecting the straws with tape. They can bend the straws if needed, and even cut them up into smaller pieces! They can make it as tall, wide, or silly as they want!

● As kids work, ask:○ What are your favorite things to do for fun?○ What’s your favorite game to play?○ Does everyone like to play the SAME way? Why or why not?○ Why do you think God made us different, with different styles of playing?

● Say: We’ve spent a lot of time playing games and creating towers, but now we’re going to check in with our friend Matt and see how HE likes to play! You might remember him from last week, along with some really cool tricks...let’s see what he’s up to!

● Video: Magic Matt / Play / Week 2● Ask: Pretty cool, right? For Matt, doing magic tricks gives him joy, energy and

and fun. It make him feel alive, because he gets to bring joy to others through magic! That’s what God wants play to be like for us. Something that gives us joy, and energizes us. He wants us to live a full, adventurous PLAYFUL life. And next week, we’ll see how that goes hand in hand with how God made us for a special purpose.

● Say: Let’s check out our verse for the Journey to remind us of the kind of God created us to have. A life full of play AND purpose.

● Slide: John 10:10b I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full!

● Say: Remember, Jesus came to earth to give us a full life. That means he wants us to live fully, loving people and loving God in every way we can! In fact, Jesus actually died for us, and rescued us from our wrong choices….all so that we can have that kind of life.

● Pray: Ask a kid to come up and pray for the group!

● Say: As one last bit of fun today, we’re going to compete AGAINST Matt in a Rubik’s Cube competition! Can I have a volunteer who wants to try and solve the Rubik’s cube faster than Matt can?

● Video: Rubik’s Cube Challenges ○ In the keynote there are several different videos of Matt solving the

Rubik’s cube, and each one is different. ○ Let kids take turns using the Rubik’s cube DURING these videos, so

they can “compete” against Matt. You can play as many or as few as you want.

○ You can choose to do this now, before small group, or you could do it at the very end of the hour, when small groups are wrapping up.

You’ll need the Rubik’s cube for this special interactive video challenge!

● Why does God love when we play?● Why did God design us for playing and having fun?● Give each kid a verse card, and encourage them to try and memorize it this month, and see if

they can recite it the next time they come back to Kids’ Club!

Have some fun playing CARD games! Depending on what the challenge level of your group, or what they most want to do, feel free to play both of these games, or just one.

Spoons: ● Split your group into teams of 6 kids or less. Give each team a deck of cards and enough

spoons for each kid on a team, MINUS ONE (if a team has 5 kids, give them 4 spoons). ● Kids should shuffle the deck, then give 4 cards to each player. Put 4 cards in the middle of the

group, along with the spoons.● The goal is to get 4 OF A KIND (like 4 eights, 4 fives, 4 kings, etc.) Once you have 4 of a kind, you

grab a spoon from the middle of your group. The last person to grab a spoon, loses!● To get 4 of a kind, place the the deck by one kid. That kid should take one card, look at it, and if

they want it, they keep it and discard another card in front of the next kid. If they don’t want it, they can just pass it to the next kid.

● Kids continue passing cards along, either taking one and replacing it, or just passing it.● Once you have 4 of a kind, sneakily grab a spoon. As soon as you see someone grab a spoon, try

to grab a spoon before they’re gone!

Crazy Eights● This game is like UNO. Shuffle the deck and give each kid 5 cards. Place the rest of the deck in

the middle.● The first kid places down a card. Then the next kid has to place a card of the same suit (hearts,

spades, clubs or diamonds) or number/face (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K). They can play an 8 at ANY time (like a wild card).If a kid does not have a matching number or suit, they have to draw from the pile.

● Once a kid gets rid of all their cards, they win! (For an extra challenge: the winner gets points by adding up all the numbers that the other kids still have in their hand). Kids can play each round as it’s own game, or keep score and see who gets to a certain score first.

Snap● Shuffle the deck, then give each person an equal number of cards, until the deck is gone.● The first person lays a card down, faceup (no one should see the card until it’s laid on the pile).● Each person takes turns laying a card on the pile. Everyone should watch out for the “rank” of the

card (2, 3, 4, J, Q, K, etc.)● If someone lays down the same rank as the card before (for example, 9), everyone races to yell

“SNAP”, and whoever says it first, takes the whole pile and adds it to the bottom of the pile of cards in their hand.

● Whoever gets the whole pile, wins!● Extra challenge: When someone lays down a sandwich (like 2, 3, 2 or king, 4, king), any kid can

slap the pile and take all the cards.

If you want, ask kids to share THEIR favorite card games, and let them teach each other how to play!
