A NEW ERA BEGINS FOR PETPALOOZA

Nine years. Where did they go? It was October 2004, when the first issues of

Petpalooza magazine hit the stands at pet retailers and rescue shelters throughout Western New York.

It was a dog, by the name of “Cosmo” that made it all possible. His insatiable love of rollicking at Ellison Park’s renowned ‘doggy beach’ prompted his owner to create the free pet publication that you’re now reading.

In the grand scheme of things, it was a simple enough endeavor, but in the life paths of Cosmo and his human sidekick, Clyde, it was the

beginning of a new era.

Fast forward, nine years.

Cosmo is missed daily; stolen by bone cancer at the young age of five. His presence will never leave those who loved him so dearly.

“Max,” now the Alpha Dog at Pet-palooza, has done an admirable job at keeping up the good work. He has never shirked in his responsibili-ties, and in turn, has inspired the birth of The Pet Avenger—a new breed of super hero who stands up for the rights of animals in need.

So what now?—We thought you’d never ask. It’s the beginning of a

new era at Petpalooza. We have teamed up with a cast of dedicated, like minded entrepreneurs to form Smart Dog Media Group.

SDMG promises to deliver new and innovative ways to bring pet owners and pet lovers (that’s you,) together with the finest pet products and services in our area, (beginning with our launch of the 365 Days of Pets, 2014 Calendar.) Go to pg.12 to register and Make Your Pet a Star!

But have no fear, Petpalooza isn’t going anywhere. In fact, you’ll see more of us as we strive to make our pet community one of the finest in the nation. Hip hip hooray!

Dogs can have lethal tails, wagging all over the place. Don’t leave any lighted candles or Jack-O-Lanterns where they could be knocked over by a swinging tail or by a curious cat. Not only could your pet start a fire but they could severely burn themselves in the process.

After searching long and hard, you’ve finally found the perfect dog. So what’s next?… Finding the perfect dog name of course!

Considering that over the course of your puppy’s life-time his name will be used over 30,000 times, and that 1 in 5 new dog owners want to change their dog’s name in the first year, choosing the right puppy name should be given as much care and thought as you showed when finding your pooch in the first place.

• Avoid names that sound like common commands such as Go, Stay, Sit, etc. This might cause confusion for your puppy when trying to train it.

• Be mindful that your dog might outgrow its name. The name Buttercup might be appropriate for a cute puppy, but not when it becomes a full grown Great Dane!

• Choose a name with one or two syllables. Dogs not only learn it quicker, but it makes them easier to train as well.

• Watch out for trendy names that might cause em-barrassment once the trend is passed. Do you want people to realize from your dog’s name that you were once a big fan of Disco?

• If you’ve adopted an older dog, it’s best to keep her current name so that it doesn’t become confused. If for some reason you must change it, consider a name that sounds similar or rhymes.

• Beware of the common trend to name dogs after people. Though doing so is not a bad thing in itself, if you name your pup after a friend or family member, they might take offense. Although you might think naming your dog Sally after your favorite Aunt is an honor, Aunt Sally might not. Also, be kind to your dog and name her after someone you like.

• Does the dog name rhyme with something nega-tive? Or maybe with the name of a family member or friend? Once discovered, you might be one of those 1 in 5 people who want to change their dog’s name!

• Stay away from potentially embarrassing names. The name “Pee Wee” might be funny at first, but as the joke gets old, how will you feel in a year or so when you have to call “Pee Wee” home at night?

• Pick a name that matches your dog’s own unique appearance or personality. The name Electra might be a good name for an energetic pooch, but not for one that likes to sleep all day.

• Ask your dog what he thinks! Since it’s going to be his name, you might want to narrow your search down to your own 5 favorite names, then try them out on your dog. You’d be surprised how well he responds to some, yet yawns at others.

Keeping in mind the above tips when searching for dog names will not only ensure a long, happy friend-ship with your dog, but also help to avoid a mid-life name change.

introducing a new cat to Your existing cats

Adopting a new kitty is an ex-tremely rewarding experience

and should bring much joy into your life. However, many families who bring home a new cat feel stressed out and helpless when the new one doesn’t get along with the existing cat(s). Here are a few tips you can follow that may help this transition and make your

house a peaceful place for them to co-exist.

The process of intro-ducing cats to one another has to be done slowly and carefully, and can take a few days to a few weeks. When

you bring your new kitty home, begin by keeping the cats separate, and allow the new cat to get used to the environment for a couple days. Help the cats acclimate by introducing each of them to a towel or cloth that has the oth-ers’ scent on it. Be sure that your existing cat does not feel neglected and give him plenty of affection during this time. Place the new cat in a carrier and supervise an introduction to the existing cat(s). Ignore any hissing or spitting, but talk in a calm voice towards both

of them and stroke and pet each of them separately for a few min-utes to reassure them that every-thing is okay. Repeat this process several times a day for longer and longer periods of time. The cats’ reactions should become less ag-gressive the more they get used to the sight and smell of each other.

Finally, you may introduce the cats together in the same space without the carrier. Allow them to get to know one another in their own ways, and offer treats, strokes, or toys so they associ-ate each other’s presence with a good experience. Keep your voice calm at all times, even if a fight breaks out, and separate them as needed. Over time, they will eventually stop feeling threatened by one another.

The reason the dog is known as man’s best friend is probablybecause he gives no advice, never tries to borrow money, and has no In-Laws.

Paul wanted to be an accountant, so he went for an aptitude test:

Tester: If I give you two Rabbits, and two rabbits, and another two rabbits, how many rabbits have you got?

Paul: SEVEN!

Tester: No, listen carefully again. If I give you two Rabbits, and two rabbits, and another two rabbits, how many rabbits have you got?

Paul: SEVEN!

Tester: Let’s try this another way. If I give you two bottles of beer, and two bottles of beer, and another two bottles of beer, how many bottles of beer have you got?

Paul: SIX.

Tester: Good! Now, if I give you two Rabbits, and two rabbits, and another two rabbits, how many rabbits have you got?

Paul: SEVEN!

Tester: How on earth do you work out that three lots of two rabbits is seven?

Paul: I’ve already got one rabbit at home!

What’s TheBest Dog ToyFor Your Adult Dog?

As a professional dog trainer, people often ask me what dog toys I recommend and

which ones I use for my own dogs.

HERE’S THE AnSWER: Your dog doesn’t need more than two toys. Rotate them, so he doesn’t get bored. But remember: We’re talking about an animal that eats the same food, day in/day out. And while your dog needs mental stimulation in the form of play and obedience training, they will be perfectly happy with chew-ing on the same toys, for years. (Much the same way young children can watch the same Disney movie 100 times without getting bored!)

So, what are the two best dog toys in my opinion?• KOng: Either in red or black. (Sometimes you need to play with your dog and this toy a bit, before your dog gets interested in it. but once they do. LOOK OUT.) The benefit of this toy is that they can chew on it for months and months, in most cases. You can also stuff it with doggie treats, cream cheese, peanut butter or whatever.

• ROPE TOy: This is usually sold in either white or multi-strand colors. It is a thick piece of soft rope, tied in a knot on each end. Another great toy because-compared to the rawhide bone-this toy will last weeks or months.

Adam G. Katz is author of the book, “Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer: An Insider’s Guide To The Most Jealously Guard-ed Dog Training Secrets In History!” and owner of the inter-net’s most popular dog training website, Dogproblems.com.

Q. My canary stopped singing; what’s going on?

A. When a canary that was previ-ously a good singer suddenly stops singing you need to find the reason why, some causes are easy to take care of, others may require a visit to your vet. The most common cause of a canary to stop singing would be

BIRD BANTERwith Paul Lewis Owner, Birds Unlimited

Located in Webster, NY

that the bird forgot the words to the song, HA just kidding, the reason is moulting, (the periodic loss and replacement of feathers). Generally a bird moults after the breeding sea-son which is usually the spring and summer. The normal moult time is about 6-8 weeks starting at the end of summer. If the bird is either losing feathers or is in the process of grow-ing any in, it may not sing. The bird should be singing again by Halloween but may take as long as Thanksgiving before it regains its full song. Some-times it’ll help to play some music, get a cd or tape of other canaries singing and that will regularly get them going again as well. Another common reason that canaries stop singing is that the bird you bought as a young male (only males sing)

has gone through its first moult and stopped singing may be that the bird is a female. Young females may sing quite well for a while then clam up after their first moult. Sometimes the bird may not feel 100% and a sick canary will not sing. This should be a warning that you need to pay close attention, and that the bird may need to get to your avian vet.

Too much light or too much heat may put/keep your canary in a constant moult and therefore keep it from singing as well. Twelve hours of light and twelve hours of dark should keep them singing most of the time.

And, remember... Hummingbirds hum because they forgot the words. Really, would I kid you?

Megan Poppoon, manager & Paul Lewis
