    It gets them ready fast!

Udder Comfort does an awesome job of softening udders, and it is gentle to the skin. That sets it apart. We use it on every fresh animal. It gets them ready fast, says Joe Engel at Luck-E Holsteins, near Hampshire, Illinois. They had visitors from 17 countries during World Dairy Expo last year and have sold genetics to over 15 countries.

Joe and Matt and parents Dennis and Beth are in partnership milking 150 registered Holsteins. They focus their genetics on balanced cows from consistent families in a freestall setup where good udders, strong front ends and high components are hallmarks.

We like to be proactive, which is good for the cows and for high quality milk. We apply Udder Comfort twice every day for the fi rst week after calving to soften and soothe and to keep the udders silky.

A Little Bit of Sunshine Even though it was a few years ago, I still remember the name of the cow that knocked me to the ground. Tinker-bell was given her nickname, Tinker Stinker, for a reason. At the time, she stood in the rst stall in the barn, which was good for her. Whenever we stood next to her, she reminded us she was there with a head-butt, then with the rough lick of her tongue. If we hadnt noticed her by that time, she would start to eat our sweat-shirt until we gave her a pat on head or a rub on the side. She was always looking for attention. She loved it when visitors came. It meant more people to pet her. While milking her, she always had to turn around to rst look at us. Then she needed to lick the unit. When the DHIA milk tester came around each month, she was one of the cows we needed to check more often so she wouldnt knock the meter off. Even outside, she was a cow that easily stood out because of her demean-or. When someone would walk through the cow yard, Tinkerbell was usually one of the rst ones to realize it. After-all, she needed a head rub. She would follow the person around even after given attention. Sometimes we needed to shoo her away in order to get work done. She had never been a show cow; she was just naturally obnoxious. One afternoon, I was helping my dad lock the dry cows in the pasture so we could let the milking herd out to the bunk to eat. Its a very routine chore and one Ive done many times. And Ive been around cows since I can remember milking them, showing them or sorting them out in the pasture. I stood in one spot to guide the cows around the corner while my dad followed them to keep them moving. Of course, Tinker-bell was one of the last ones. The cows before her had no trouble turning the corner when I put up my hands to show them they needed to go to the pasture. Tinkerbell, however, had other plans. She saw me, but my upheld hands didnt help guide her in the right direc-tion. She wasnt even looking to follow the others out to the green grass. She just kept speeding towards me. Realiz-ing her head was coming right for my chest, I knew I couldnt stop her deter-mined upcoming push. I turned around to escape over the fence, but tripped over my feet. Then I felt her nose from behind. As I fell to the ground, panic set in. I just kept thinking, Oh no, I might get hurt. This could be bad. I stumbled to the ground, hitting my knees and hands hard on the concrete. Adrena-line immediately rushed through me and one thought popped into my head.

I needed to get up before she stepped on me. I have never felt so scared. She was nearly standing over me and if she came any closer, it wouldnt have been good. I shouted for two reasons to try to prevent her from coming closer and to alert my dad of the situation if he hadnt already been aware. As I shout-ed, I rolled to my side and hastily got back on my feet. My dad then chased Tinkerbell away and checked to make sure I was OK. Although the happening only took seconds, it felt much longer to me. I was shaking and a little emo-tionally shook up, but I was physically ne aside from the scrapes on my hands and large bruises on my knees. I had never had an experience like that even after growing up on a farm. Sure, Ive had times when I needed to

dart out of the way in the pasture or when my untrained cow or calf became a little unruly, but I had never been as scared as I had been that day when Tin-kerbell nearly stepped on me. After the incident, I became a little more cautious around the cows. I tried to always have someone with me out in the cow yard or pasture. When I had to venture out myself, I made sure I had a sorting stick to lengthen the distance between me and the cows. It didnt last long for my slight anxiety to go away, but it did make me realize I need to remember that although cows are friendly, theyre still animals. For all people working with cows, we cant let our guard down and must be attentive while working with them. Its important for people who work around animals to remember that. I just hope others dont have to be knocked down to realize it. Stay safe!

When someone would walk through the cow yard, Tinkerbell was usually one of the first ones to realize it.

After using it the rst time we couldnt believe how the cows used the stalls. It was unbelievable! All the others we looked at are xed. This one has hydraulics and is very easy to maneuver around the barn. Its very heavy duty. There is nothing we would change about it. We love it!

With a short hay crop in some parts of the country, corn stalks might nd more use as a feed resource as well as for bedding this year. I dont know if that will make a higher price for corn stalks because there are probably a lot of corn stalks in elds

across the country relative to the potential use. If it costs more to do the work, that probably means prices go up accordingly. Well see what happens in the market place. If you have use for corn stalks beyond what you bale on your own land, its better to talk with other corn growers now rather than waiting to see what happens to show up in the mar-ket later. We have pretty good eld drying conditions now. We should consider moisture variations across elds and be care-ful to wait for moisture in stalks to dry down to a safe level for baling. Pricing corn stalks might be based on bedding value com-pared to other options. Corn stalks are usually not as good at absorbing moisture and making a good bedding pack com-

pared to good small grain straw. The price might be based on comparing feed value where they are used for feed. This might be done by comparing ration costs when using corn stalks with other ingredients to balance the ration compared to the cost of rations using hay or other roughage feed material. Landowners who consider selling corn stalks off the farm are sometimes think-ing about the value of nutrients like nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) that are being taken off the farm. Sometimes they work out agreements to bring the same amounts of N-P-K or dollar value back to the farm in the form of manure. Its not easy to put a value on the organic matter component. One of the nutrient management charts I use says a ton of corn stover, on a dry matter basis, might have 22 pounds of nitrogen, 8 pounds of P2-O5 phosphorus, and 32 pounds of K2-O potassium. We can check N, P and K prices at a local fertilizer store and estimate a value. Phosphorus fertilizer has a nitrogen component as with an18-46-0. I deduct the value of the nitrogen from the phosphorus product based the nitrogen product I use to get the value of the phosphorus in the fertilizer. There are some variables to consider. The N, P, K content can vary with growing conditions. If Im pricing based on N-P-K content, I might have the material tested for nutrients and moisture. How much of the N, P and K in the crop residue will be available to the crop? I dont have very good answer for that. If I were buying corn stalks or soybean straw, I might back off some on an N-P-K value because of this uncertainty. How much of the N, P, K is needed on the eld the crop residue is com-ing from or going to? A soil test helps to answer that. If phosphorus soil tests are very high, I wouldnt be buying much phosphorus fertilizer, and the phosphorus in crop residue might have less value to me accordingly. I might look at the value of corn stalks in the market place. If someone is baling corn stalks and selling them, and I could buy them already baled for $15 or $20 or $25 per bale then I might subtract what I think it costs me to bale them and what makes it worth my time to bale them at the neighbors, and whats left is what I might be willing to pay the neighbor. Hauling costs might be a factor too. The same general concepts apply as we think about soybean straw, small grain straw and other crop residue material taken off elds. This process might involve weigh-ing some bales, along with testing for nutrients and moisture if these factors are part of calculations. I think a value per bale or a value per acre ultimately is based on thinking about weight and quality factors. I might buy butter by the case or by the box, but its probably based on what I assume or know about the weight and quality. Sometimes I like to look at a couple of different approaches to looking at the value; and if I see some numbers in a similar kind of range, Im more con dent about how things are turning out. When youre using thumbrules and general guidelines, its always good to make practical use of your own common sense and observation skills and to keep your own brain plugged in. With any estimates, measurements or testing thats done, what counts at the end of the day is a price that a buyer and seller agree on - based on what makes sense to them in meeting their needs and goals. Please encourage family and neighbors to have a SAFE fall harvest season.
