Enhanced Performance Now Offers Kinesio Taping.Kinesio Taping (KT) can assist with increasing range-of-motion by providing continual myofascial stretching. It also helps to:

• stabilize a weakened or loose joint • either inhibit or facilitate muscle movement• with fl uid and edema management in tissues

KT is becoming an essential tool for Massage Therapists worldwide. Rooted in the science of Kinesiology, KT activates neurological, circulatory, and lymphatic networks to relieve pain and swelling and restore normal musculoskeletal function. Karen Stromberg, LMT, is one of the rst Certi ed Kinesio Taping Practitioners in the Tampa Bay area.

"I came to Karen Stromberg with a running injury that just wouldn't heal. As any runner knows, an interruption in training can be a major set-back. ank goodness I turned to Karen for help. In a single therapy session, she was able to not only alleviate the pain, it was as if the injury never occurred."

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH RUNNING SHOE TO BUY?Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, LMT, CPED, BOCPED

There is no one shoe for everyone but there is a best shoe for everyone. What I mean with this statement is that a runner cannot walk into a store and ask for a particular model just because someone recommended it to them. Each individual has his or her own stability needs, mostly based on ankle mobility; foot shape includ-ing arch height and length as well as instep height; knee position relative to the foot; lower-leg angles; unique degree of muscle flexibility; current aches and pains; and previous shoe’s wear pattern. All play into selecting the best shoe for you. Most importantly, find a good running store with employees experienced and educated in the fitting pro-cess. Some are better than others. If you develop aches, pains or injury after buying your shoes in a particular store, try a different one the next time you shop. The same goes if they didn’t help solve a previous problem. I don’t believe running issues are to be expected just because a person runs. There is a shoe, sock, foot support combination out there that will prevent or help alleviate almost every running ache, pain and injury. There are basically five different categories or types of running shoes: Motion Control, Stability, Mild Stability, Neutral, and Light Weight (also referred to as minimal). Before discussing each one, know that our ultimate goal is to get and keep the ankle and knee aligned with the foot. This position, called neutral, helps eliminate injury-causing wear and tear in joints, tendons, and ligaments. Motion Control is a shoe for either a person whose ankles overpronate (collapse inward excessively), or one who is fairly overweight, or is just a big person. This shoe has the guts to keep that ankle aligned and is strong enough to hold up under the three to four times body weight crashing down while running. A Stability, or Control shoe, is for runners whose ankles moderately overpronate, or collapse inward. This is the most common foot-type and easy to identify. Note that the knees will also turn in to some extent. Mild Stability shoes are for those with a very slight amount of overpronation. These shoes are especially important for those logging more miles such as marathon trainers, who will begin to experience more and more overpronation as fatigue sets in. A little back-up stability will help eliminate that pain that shows up at a particu-lar mile mark, caused when a runner’s fatigue level overwhelms the stability level of the shoe. Consider one of the shoe types above if you are experiencing any of the following: knee pain (especially on the inside), medial shin splints (inside of the tibia), calf or Achilles tendon pain, inside ankle pain, heel and/or arch pain, and bunions. Neutral running shoes are for those whose ankles do not collapse inward at all, or actually oversupinate (ankles turn out). Oversipinators look like they are running completely on the outside of their shoes and are usually pigeon-toed. Many times this is due to being bow-legged. Knees will track right over the foot, which is very good in neutral runners, to a little to the outside in oversupinators. In either case, a very forgiving neu-tral shoe is the recommendation for either - a shoe that will allow for any movement that this typically very stiff ankle and foot may have. A neutral shoe is generally recommended for those having pain in any or all of the following areas: outsides of the knee, lower leg, shin, ankle and foot. The last shoe-type are lightweight cushioned shoes, sometimes called minimal shoes. Note that I in-cluded “cushioned” in my description. This type of shoe, normally with a lower heel-to-toe-height ratio, helps cut down on levers that a typical running shoe usually produces. With the reduction of levers, many aches and pains can be reduced or eliminated. These shoes help keep your center of gravity more centered over your hips, naturally shortening your stride for better efficiency. They may also help those with forefoot pain such as meta-tarsalgia or neuroma, as well as certain knee pain. The negatives are that lightweight cushioned shoes won’t last as long, and may have to be replaced twice as often. They will also not absorb shock as well as a typical run-ning shoe because of reduced midsole material. Don’t expect to have pain if you run. One of the above, from the proper running shoe company, will eliminate the vast majority of issues experienced by runners today. Just add the finishing touches – proper func-tional socks and foot supports.

YOUR LIFE COULD CHANGE FOREVER IF YOU DON’T READ

THIS AND ACT Did this headline grab your attention? I hope so. Some of you have heard this before, but I’ve been involved in two recent extremely sad and frustrating cases that could have been vastly different if the victims had read the following pearls of wisdom I am about to tell you: If you ride a bicycle, a motorcycle, jog, or walk on our roads, you absolute-ly, without a shred of doubt need to carry the maximum Uninsured/Underinsured limits you can afford on your personal automobile policy. Please understand that if you are struck by one of the many crazy drivers out there who seem to take plea-sure in buzzing us while doing any of these activities on the road, YOUR auto in-surance applies. That’s because the law says if you are injured by a motor vehicle, your insurance pays you as well as the insurance of the at fault party. The problem is, most irresponsible drivers are also irresponsible about carrying insurance. Our Legislature, in its infinite wisdom allows drivers to purchase insurance without having any liability coverage that would protect you. You can prevent an uninsured situation by purchasing UM coverage, which will act as liability coverage for the driver who injures you. This is not only important if they have no insurance, but, as we’ve seen on many occasions, a driver who hits a cyclist frequently doesn’t stop to hang around; therefore, that driver becomes a “phantom” driver and triggers your insurance. Auto insurance companies do not like to sell UM coverage, because that coverage always acts as insurance for the bad guy, and they can’t rate that person’s driving experience like they do for you. Also, UM is an optional coverage, so the agent will tell you you have “full coverage” without it. Finally, I have had many clients tell me that agents have told them when shopping for insurance that if you have health insurance, you don’t need UM, since it duplicates the health coverage. THIS IS NOT TRUE. Health insurance will not pay you for living without an arm, a leg, or being unable to work. UM coverage will. Please feel free to call me at my office (727-381-0070) if any of this column confuses you. I’ll be happy to answer any questions about your coverage. Please note I am not an insurance agent. I implore you to have this coverage for your protection; so, if you are injured by a negligent driver, I will be able to help you get through the nightmare of dealing with the aftermath. In conclusion, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE BUY UM INSURANCE ON YOUR AUTO POLICY, in the highest amount you can afford. If, like me, you’re going to be foolish enough to ride on Florida roads, protect yourself, and then hope you never need to use the coverage. Be safe.

All athletes in some way or another want to decrease run time, increase performance or just finish a race. Training prepares you for the race and goal you set for yourself. But many times, athletes with variables of over training, injuries or poor training will plateau (peak) weeks before the race and have fallen short of their goals. There are many physiology functions the body will endure during and after an exercise. Lactate threshold, an-aerobic threshold and VO2max (O2 uptake). In this article, we will concentrate on VO2max. VO2max refers to the max amount of O2 that an athlete can use during max exercise. The more O2 you can use during exercise, the more ATP (energy) you can produce and thus increase performance. ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the main power source for your muscles. It can be made in your body aerobically (with O2). Aerobic ATP production which uses O2 produces a much higher energy output. Therefore, the more O2 you supply your body before and during exertion, the more short-term production of ATP and the more energy and power your muscles will have. The object for training is to increase VO2max by pushing max physical output with a balance of O2 uptake. This is noticed when athlete find themselves with a higher pulse rate, breathing faster and harder at max physical output.

EWOT A different approach to increase VO2max is EWOT (exercise with oxygen training). EWOT was devel-oped by Dr. Von Ardenna original named “Oxygen Multi-Step Therapy”. EWOT (exercise with oxygen training) is as simple as the name states, training at max output with puri-fied oxygen. More oxygen will result in more production of ATP, increasing VO2max and a faster recovery. Take for instance Joe Fernandez; several years ago Joe was training for the Jacksonville Marathon. He reports that his training was slow and plateauing. 4 weeks out, he received a grade II strain in his hamstring from over-training. He was concerned about not competing in the race due to injury setback. He tired all conservative therapies with no positive results. He came across an EWOT trainer/therapist. Joe was instructed to train with 90% oxygen at max output on stationary bike 4 times a week while breathing in an oxygen mask. This was demonstrated by 5 mins of warm up, 20 mins of max output and back down to 5 mins of cool down. Mr. Fer-nandez reports that he was able to compete in the Marathon and set a personal record (PR) and then 6 days later, competed in a 10K with another PR. Joe states “I felt great with each EWOT, lasting longer during max output training and recovering faster”. To summarize, EWOT will increase your performance, decrease your run time and finish your first Mara-thon.

New Approach to Improving Performance

EWOT (exercise with oxygen training)

Dr. Tommy Rhee DC ART

Dr. Tommy Rhee DC is a master Active Release Technique provider. He was the Chiropractor for UCLA athletic and presently in Tampa treating professional athletes to increase recovery/ performance with (HBOT) Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and (EWOT) Exercise with Oxygen Training.

Training the Mind “All that we achieve and all that we fail to achieve is the direct result of our own thoughts.” James Allen

Develop your goal visually, learn to mentally see yourself achieve, and then physically implement. As I write this article I am reminded of never having any athletic talent, nor ever dreamed I would be jumping out of an airplane and competing in acrobatics. I had to develop mental control of my thoughts, so actions could be had, and goals could be met. Learning to control my thoughts is largely how I was able to reach creative, yet challenging goals such as: competing in aerial acrobatics, completion of 94 marathons including 12 Boston marathons, and being a teacher for over 26 years-need I say more!

Let’s use the example of training for a long distance running event and time goal as a model of when there is a need to train the mind. Long distance running, especially the marathon-26.2 miles distance is mostly a mental task after correct physical training has been completed. How does a beginner runner imagine they can run a full 26.2 miles; or an average runner with a low range of speed reach a goal such as qualifying for the Boston Marathon? How does a walker even dream of beginning a long distance running program despite never being very physically active? What about the injured runner who wants to return to a fitness routine but has just about given up on that goal? In each of these examples mental strength preparation must go hand in hand with physical preparation.

Here are some mental strengthening exercises which will help you obtain your fitness goals.

1. Be specific with your goal; then break it down into monthly realistic sub goals: Example: The goal of completing a marathon distance (26.2 miles) Sub-goal #1 – 20 min. nonstop jog Sub-goal #2 - running a 5K Sub-goal #3 - running a 10K Sub-goal #4 – running a half marathon Sub-goal#5 - running a practice run lasting the same amount of time consistent with the time goal. 2. Find a visual photo of what your goal should look like. Put your face on it.

Example: A runner completing a race with a strong finish; cut the face out and put yours in it.

3. Learn to turn your mind off to discomfort. Realize 5 minutes will go by until the body adapts to the velocity, impact, body mechanics, and breathing requirements which comprise movement. The muscles, the mind, the digestion system, etc. have to fully identify with each of those components of movement which may be initially uncomfortable. After 5-10 minutes of warming up, practice turning your mind off for 5 minutes and think of nothing but breathing and your effort level; be aware of the amount of foot strikes per inhalation.

4. Eliminate dissociation for the next 10 minutes. Again, focus only on breathing and cadence until it matches the corresponding training pace set forth with the distance goal set. Practice this “10 minute listening drill” at each running bout or other long distance endeavor.

5. Listen only to “your” music. Tune into listening to the musical sound of your breathing and foot strike. Be aware of every muscle being used, the breathing effort, the warmth developing throughout your body, and the impact of your footsteps. After 15 minutes or so associate all of those physical feelings and keep them steady. Non-example: Music through headphones. This form of dissociation will mask the sound of your and cadence. As a result you put yourself at high risk of going out to fast and/or not keeping an even pace throughout the event. 6. Avoid letting your mind drift to the finish line until half way through. The mind cannot fathom the long distances of 13 or more miles of continual movement. However, after the half way mark, the body and mind can now develop increased focus on the finish line. At this time begin visualizing you going through the finish line.

7. Practice facing the demons of distance running and turn them into positive affirmations. The demons usually come right before ¾ way of the finish line. In a marathon negative thoughts creep in after mile 14, or by mile 8-9 in a half marathon. “Demons” are those negative thoughts that come with physical and mental weariness. We can become overwhelmingly defeated and depressed with questioning thoughts of our training, our lack of sleep, poor weather conditions, our previous injuries, etc. These negative thoughts can result in derailing our goal pace. We may begin to stop at water stops, walk prematurely than otherwise planned, initiate re-lacing our shoes even though not needed, begin talking to someone, etc. Demons while going the distance can result in any form of dissociation to take your mind off of your task. Don’t give in to those traps or there goes your time goal. Rather tap into your physical and mental strengths and again, focus on breathing and cadence. Reflect on how thoroughly you trained. Practice positive affirmations of how well you are doing and the strong finish coming up. Slow down and regroup if you must, but always move forward. Each mile relax your body and mind with a few deep breaths and allow the arms to drop down momentarily to your sides.

Example: Demon thought: I hardly got any sleep last night which explains why I am slowing down. Positive affirmation: Wow, this lack of sleep helps me lose track of the miles versus counting and dreading each and every mile. Letting the “job” be done through you as it relates to sports means paying attention to the natural requirements necessary to reach your goal. When you keep the goal event simple and allow yourself to simply breathe and listen to your footsteps, much of the distraction and negative complications are eliminated. Now you have developed a peaceful, yet purpose filled mind with the finish line in sight.

Remember: Do not count the miles, but rather make those miles count. LG
