Dear Parishioners, I hope that everyone will have a grace filled holiday weekend as we celebrate Labor Day. We are blessed to live in a country where opportunities still exist. It is one of the reasons so many people seek to

come to this country. Yet we also live in a time when many struggle to be fully employed, when many find their efforts are undervalued, and when the demands of work take away from time that should be spent with family. One of the concerns that Popes John Paul II, Benedict, and Francis had/have with the economic realities as they are lived is that too often people are seen as economic items only. Employers around the world can treat employees as numbers and not as people. They can answer to the balance sheet or only to shareholders and not to the larger good. It can mean everything from taking jobs out of this country simply for cheaper labor to workers laboring in conditions that are dehumanizing. Anyone who works knows that employment is never solely about money. We want to support our families and we know that our human dignity is enhanced when we have done a good job and when that job is recognized. If we own a business we feel better about ourselves when we know that we are contributing to society and not just pursuing seeking material wealth. Jesus was a carpenter. He worked with Joseph and he supported his mother. I am sure that he had a sense of service for those who came to him. In his ministry, he appreciated the efforts of farmers and fishermen, laborers and shepherds. This Labor Day weekend let us reflect on the contributions of the many that make this world better by their efforts. I recently came across an article in AMERICA Magazine about Palliative care in the womb. It is about respecting life and dignity for mothers and their unborn children facing severe limitations. These efforts are often unknown but they are truly about respecting life. The article by Kerry Weber is entitled Graces Amid the Grief and it can be read at America’s website. It is very much worth reading. We have a very strong Saint Vincent De Paul ministry here at OLOW and they are linked with other parish SVDP groups. On Sunday, September 22nd, the Society is hosting a benefit, St. Vincent de Paul Society’s Southside Neighbors Coming Together, to help the less for tunate in our neighborhoods. The Society is a network of fr iends, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need. The benefit will be from 1 – 5 PM at Bourbon Street in Marrionette Park. Tickets are only $40. In Christ,

Father Mike
