The Exaltation of the Holy Cross September 14
In the Christian liturgical calendar, there are several different Feasts of the Cross, all of which commemorate the cross used in the crucifixion of Jesus. While Good Friday is dedicated to the Passion of Christ and the Crucifixion, these days celebrate the cross itself, as the instrument of salvation.
This feast is in Latin Exaltatio Sanctae Crucis. In English, it is called The Exaltation of the Holy Cross in the official translation of the Roman Missal, called Feast of the Glorious Cross, also.
According to legends that spread widely, the True Cross was discovered in 326 by Saint He-lena, the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great, during a pilgrimage she made to Jerusalem. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was then built at the site of the discovery, by order of Helena and Constantine. The church was dedicated nine years later, with a portion of the cross placed inside it. Other legends explain that in 614, that portion of the cross was car-ried away from the church by the Persians, and remained missing until it was recaptured by the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius in 628. Initially taken to Constantinople, the cross was returned to the church the following year.
The date of the feast marks the dedication of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in 335. This was a two-day festival: although the actual consecration of the church was on September 13, the cross itself was brought outside the church on September 14 so that the clergy and faithful could pray before the True Cross, and all could come forward to venerate it.

La Exaltación de la Santa Cruz
14 de Septiembre En el calendario litúrgico cristiano, hay varias fiestas diferentes de la Cruz, todas las cuales conmemoran la cruz utilizada en la crucifixión de Jesús. ST. JOSEPH SEMINARY ANNUAL COLLECTION
THIS WEEKEND, SEPTEMBER 12-13, 2015
The annual collection for Saint Joseph’s Seminary will
be taken up this weekend, September 12-13.
Since its opening in 1896, the message of Jesus Christ
has been proclaimed, lived and celebrated by the dedi-
cated and committed priests of the Archdiocese of New
York who have studied and received their theological
education and formation at Saint Joseph Seminary.
The cost of nurturing and training our future priests is an
investment for tomorrow that all of us need to share.
Please give prayerful consideration to this year’s annual
seminary appeal. Our priests have responded to a very
special call to serve, guide, and teach so as to share with
others the mystery of God’s love for all of us. Your sup-
port during their time of preparation is deeply appreci-
ated.
ATTENTION ALL CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES 2015
Next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 16 at
7 PM in the school auditorium.

Catechetical Sunday Each year, Catechetical Sunday is celebrated on the third Sunday of September; we are celebrating it today, September 13. The Theme this year is: “Safeguarding the Dig-nity of Every Human Person.” Pope John Paul II, says: “Among the laity who become evangelizers, catechists have a place of honor…Catechists are among those who have received Christ’s command to ‘go and teach all nations’” (Guide for Catechists, 33). We are happy and grateful to welcome back our cate-chists and assistants for 2015-2016.

La colecta anual para el Seminario de St. Joseph se tomará este
fin de semana, Septiembre 12-13.
Desde su apertura en 1896, el mensaje de Jesucristo ha sido
proclamado, vivido, y celebrado por dedicados y comprometi-
dos sacerdotes de la arquidiócesis de Nueva York que han
estudiado y han recibido su educación y formación teológica
en el Seminario San José.
El costo de la manutención y formación de nuestros futuros
sacerdotes es una inversión para el mañana que todos debemos
compartir. Por favor considere seriamente en contribuir a la
campaña anual del seminario este año. Nuestros sacerdotes
han respondido a un llamado muy especial para servir, guiar y
enseñar a fin de compartir con los demás el misterio del amor

El Tema de este año es: “Hemos de Salvaguardar la Dignidad de Toda Persona”. El Papa Juan Pable II Dice: “Entre los laicos que se volvieron evangelizadores, los catequistas tienen un lugar de honor… Los catequistas están entre aquellos que han recibido el comando de Cristo ‘a ir y enseñar a todas las naciones’” (Guide for Cate-

for the repair of the bell tower. Tickets sell
for $50 each.

Volunteers Needed Any adults or teenagers interested in volunteering to set up and clean up for dinner and refresh-ments during OLGC’s Discovering Christ series, please notify Marianne Rosson through the Parish Office (718-447-1504). This can be counted to-wards service hours. Series starts October 7, Wednesday evenings and runs for 7 weeks. Students can volunteer 1 – 2 hours to set up and 1 – 2 hours to clean up.

OLGC Youth Group The OLGC Youth Group is looking for adults to help with
meetings and activities. If you are interested in working
with this important ministry please contact Kelly Molinari

Youth Group meets on Tuesday evenings in the school gym
and is open to all members of the Parish community in 6th
through 9th grades. Please check the OLGC website or the
OLGC Youth Ministry Facebook page for more informa-
tion.
The Youth Group is conducting a fundraiser to help offset
the costs of their activities. They will be selling flower
bulbs that can be planted this fall. Catalogs and ordering
information are available in the back of the church or in the

ROSARIOS PARA PREPARAR LA CELEBRACIÓN DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE
Hoy, 13 de Septiembre, nuestra Cofradía Guadalupana inicia el rezo del rosario en los hogares en preparación para la celebración de la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Gua-dalupe. El grupo trae la imagen de la Virgen, reza el rosario y ora con la familia y sus invitados. La imagen se queda en el
hogar de la familia esa noche y después continúa su peregrinaje con la próxima familia. Si usted desea invitar el grupo a su hogar, favor de llamar a Rufino Pavía al 347-979-5242.
