Screen time Screen time is the time you spend watching TV or DVDs, using the computer, playing video or hand-held computer games, and using a mobile phone. Children aged 5-18 years should have no more than two hours screen time a day. You can help your child develop healthy screen time habits by setting guidelines, leading by example, offering a variety of non-screen activities and keeping TV’s and computers out of children’s bedrooms.

LITNUM CUP – A CLOSE RESULT

Once again, the LitNum Cup was run over a successful three days last week. House against house and,

holding to tradition, Mallee won by only 28 points. The end scores were Mallee 591 to Wattle 563. While

Mallee may have won overall, Wattle put up a great fight with two teams winning the daily prizes.

There was one maze problem the students all had trouble with… enjoy! You must follow the instructions!

Left/right only maze

Yet again, a larger version of one in the Maze gallery. Enter on the left exit on the right. You must go

HEALTH AND PE WEEK

Early next term the school will be celebrating Health and PE Week. Again there will be a variety of activities for all students throughout the week concluding with the Annual Fun Run.

The school is also registered for Walk to School Day which encourages students to walk to school, ride or scoot to school or the bus stop and the opportunity to win prizes for themselves or the school.

Full details will be provided next term.

Walk to School Month

Walk to School month is a free, easy and fun way for kids to get active this October and to raise awareness of the broad-er health and wellbeing benefits.

Between 3 to 28 October 2016, Victorian primary school students are encouraged to walk, ride or scoot to and from school to kick-start healthy travel habits that can lead to good health for life. Stay tuned to Linkup to find out about our involvement in a Robinvale Health Services program.

YEAR 9/10 PHYSICAL EDUCATION- IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

Students in Years 9/10 Physical Education have recently completed a Fast Fives Netball program. This involved a coach coming into the school and running the program for the students. This program is part of the Government funded Sporting Schools Program. Previously this program was only available for Primary students, however research has found that Secondary aged students have high rates in inactivity.

As part of the program, LaTrobe University is conducting research on its effectiveness. Students will be asked to complete surveys to provide feedback.

Parents have been sent an email from the school with a link to a parent survey. It is important that parents complete this survey as it is a requirement of the school in order to remain on the program.

The survey is only collecting data, not personal information. Only the school has access to email addresses, not Latrobe University.

Please contact myself at the College if you have any questions.

FLOOD WARNING

As the school holidays are approaching, you may have plans to travel on Victoria’s roads. Significant rain is expected to fall over much of Victoria over the next few days, which may result in flooding.

Because of this rainfall, there is an increased risk to those travelling on our roads, and it is possible that houses across the State may be impacted as well.

I urge you to heed the following advice from emergency services:

You should never drive through floodwater – it only takes about 15 centimetres of water to lose control of your vehicle.

Drive to the conditions around you and be aware of road hazards such as mud, debris, damaged roads and bridges.

Roads in your area could be damaged by the bad weather so plan your journey and monitor VicTraffic for road condition updates and any road closures, see: Vic Traffic

Never swim, walk or play in floodwater, it is dangerous and may contain hazardous debris or toxins.

If your property is at risk of flooding, please raise belongings onto tables, benches or beds and if you are on a farm, consider moving your livestock to higher ground.

Remain informed with emergency broadcasters to ensure you are up-to-date with the latest conditions and if possible, make sure your neighbours are aware of the situation. For more information, see: Vic Emergency

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday break.

NEWS FROM YEAR 4/5/6

Well, here we are – the end of Term 3 – three quarters of the school year has passed. We have continued our English Rotations with

guided reading, CLOZE activities, USSR (Uninterrupted, Silent, Sustained, Reading), comprehension tasks and Literature Circles.

Throughout the term, groups have read: Charlotte’s Web, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Ghost on the Hill, Blabbermouth, Specky Magee,

Once, Then, After, Deep Water and Someone Like Me. We have also listened to the serial reading of My Side of the Story – Escape

From War and Because of Winn-Dixie.

We have written explanations and worked hard to improve our knowledge of punctuation. This week, we have inserted quotation

marks and capital letters into pieces of text. We must now transfer this knowledge to our personal writing.

In Maths, we have continued to practise tables. We have some tables ladders taped to our classroom floor with the idea being that

students count by a given table as they run through the ladder placing two feet in each space. I would encourage parents to

continue practising tables at home as fast and accurate recall is definitely a valuable skill to have.

In Theme, with Mrs Zanker and Mrs Mackenzie, students have completed presentations about their social justice issues of health,

water and education. This process included self and peer evaluation.

The Year 11 PE class have provided soccer coaching during Sport and we have been fortunate to have some specialist soccer clinics

during the last two weeks.

We have continued to practise our concert act and hope to WOW the audience with our performance tomorrow.

Tomorrow we farewell the Saunders children – Geordi, Jasmine and Lilly. We wish them and the rest of the family, all the very best

in their move to Nangiloc.

DIVISION SPORTS

The P-6 Division Sports have been rescheduled for Monday, October 3rd. Students involved will receive updated information and

permission forms that must be returned tomorrow.

Victorian Maths Challenge

While students are on holidays, it is a great opportunity to share some quality time together. Students can enjoy learning if they have their parents joining in on the fun.

Families with children in Years 5 to 8 are encouraged to take part in the new Victorian Maths Challenge. The Challenge is a fun way to explore the links between mathematics and real-world situations.

The Challenge is open for 12 weeks until 29 November 2016.

Check it out on the website.
