From Principal RandallAloha HTA Ohana,Thank you for your continued support of our LearningCenter Policies. We have been observing a number ofcomputer-related incidents in the Learning Center. This isa reminder to all students and parents that we will beenforcing the HTA Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and theHTA Academic Integrity and Cheating Policy (AICP),which list the following consequences:

Students who violate the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP): The school reserves the right to enforce appropriate

consequences for the violation of any section of the Acceptable Use Policy . Such consequences could includethe loss of privileges on a laptop, the loss of the use of thecomputer for an amount of time determined by theadministration and members of the Technology Department, possible disciplinary action, and possible legal action.

These consequences apply to students participating inthe laptop lease program at HTA as well as to studentswho are using the schools laptops and computers oncampus .

Computers with illegal or inappropriate software or materialson them will be reformatted of re-imaged, and the studentwill be charged $25 AUP violation fee PER incident for this service . This amount may be increased for repeatviolations.

In the case of repeated laptop abuse and/or damages, theschool has the right to revoke the use of the schoolslaptop and the student will be restricted to using only on-campus computers . Repeated AUP offenses or laptopabuses may lead to the loss of a students privilege of usinga laptop on campus. Students are to report any knownviolations of the Acceptable Use Policy to appropriateadministrative staff members. Random checks of student laptops will be conducted throughout the year to ensurethat these policies are being followed.

HTA takes no responsibility for activities conducted onschool computers and laptops or materials stored oncomputers, laptops, or the schools network .

    Counselors Corner

In the last month, I have talked to several parents and teachers about motivational

techniques they could use to motivate their child(ren) and/or student(s). What is motivation?Motivation is giving someone incentive or make someone willing. I know this is a difficult task not only for teachers but also for parents as well. Think about what makes your child happy. What can you do as an incentive to motivate them? Do they like having free time on thecomputer? Going to the beach, movies, shopping with friends or do they like just hangingout with mom and dad?

Find something that piques their interest and use it as an incentive to motivate them. HawaiiTechnology Academy also has an incentive program known as uBOOST, an onlineperformance and recognition reward system. Please contact your teacher for uBOOSTdetails.

When you are trying to motivate your child, remember to ask yourself these questions.

    1. What are their likes and dislikes? Strengths and weaknesses?2. Do I give compliments and not complaints?3. Am I charting their progress and can my child see it?4. Are we taking breaks to stretch and rejuvenate?5. Am I pressuring them or are they putting too much pressure on themselves to be

perfect?6. What are the incentives? It doesnt have to be monetary.7. What are the consequences and am I enforcing those consequences?

I am listing several websites that give beneficial information on motivation.

    http://www.newsforparents.org/expert_motivate_kids_homework.html

    http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=1304

    http://www.solveyourproblem.com/motivation/motivate-your-children.shtml

    http://www.familyhood.com/motivatekids.html

I hope this helps or at least gives you a platform to motivate your student(s) and/or child(ren).

    Mahalo,

    Mrs. Buford

    K-8 School Counselor

    Parking at the LC:

Parking at the Oahu LC is still very limited. Parents

are reminded that all stalls marked HFEC are for HTA staff only. Teachers have been having difficultyfinding parking in stalls that are assigned to them;this can adversely affect their scheduled classes. Please be sure to find unassigned parking along thestreet or in the church parking lot.

LC Visitation:Parents, please remember that the LCis an active school property. Parentsshould only be on campus if they haveofficial business or an appointment withHTA staff. Our teachers welcome youin their classrooms, but pleaseschedule a time with them via k-mail. Itis very difficult to instruct students whenfamily members continually enter andexit the classrooms. It is notappropriate nor do we have space for parents to wait for their child(ren) tofinish classes. We welcome all parentsto visit the campus when they havelegitimate business with faculty andstaff. We want all of our Ohana to feelwelcome at HTA, but we no longer have the facilities to provide waitingspace.

    Parent Chaperone/Volunteers:

Parents who would like to volunteer at HTA or chaperone class trips and activities need to havethe following on file at HTA:

A Tuberculosis (TB) clearance A clear background check

A TB test can be performed at your local publichealth clinic free of charge. If you would likeinformation on getting a background check done, please see Karen or Paul at the reception desk.
