Honoring Christ by serving the needs of children and families

Right after the Back-to-School event, one of our single moms sent us that verse along with a note of thanks. Her gratitude for something as small as a couple of backpacks filled with supplies for her boys touched our hearts deeply. The fact that she knew it was a gift from the Lord and that He was allowing us to share in this blessing was just awesome.

Another mom wrote, “The single parent ministry has truly blessed me once again… the backpacks with supplies for all four of my children were awesome. Thank you from Bianca, Evan, Isaac, and Natasha as well.”

I want to say thank you to all who gave, participated, served, and prayed for this event. Yes, we provided the necessary supplies for the kids to start the school year off right, but more importantly, we offered hope to these families in Jesus’ name. There’s nothing better than that!

A Note From Bob -

On February 22, 2009, I surrendered my life to Christ and was baptized on Easter. On March 1st, Sheridan House gave me my first Bible. As a single parent of two boys, that was the first time I realized I had direction for my life.

Then came the testing time. Just three weeks ago, I was driving an old, beat-up minivan with bald tires, no second gear, no A/C, and a leaky radiator that overheated every twenty minutes or so. On my way to and from work, I would have to stop and put more water in the radiator. The van was rusted and also had roof leaks. So, when it rained outside; it rained inside too. When it got hot, the carpets got steamy and the smell was just awful.

Recently, I broke my leg and was on crutches for six weeks. That meant on my way to work, I had to pull over, get out with my crutches, open the hood, “crutch” back to the passenger side to get the gallon of water, then limp back and fill the radiator. I knew this was part of my testing of faith, but it was tough. I just focused on the fact that I was grateful to still have a job and that I was able to get to my destination.

Three weeks ago, my church partnered with Sheridan House and together they gave me a new car - new to me anyway - a 2000 Buick Century… without leaks and with air conditioning! It’s the first time I’ve had a car with air conditioning in months. I am so grateful to God for what He has done in my life this year and for what He will continue to do for me… He really is a Father.

The residential summer program was filled with milestones for both the boys and girls. They

had the opportunity to expand their knowledge through academic challenges, increase their awareness

through community service projects, enhance their physical health through structured weight training and endurance

competitions, determine their goals for the future through question and answer meetings with professionals across South

Florida, manage their personal budgets through the use of mazumas (a Sheridan House currency), and most importantly,

discover who they are and who they want to become through daily Bible studies and through an exploration of a relationship

with Christ. Needless-to-say, it was an amazing summer.

At the conclusion of the summer program, we celebrated the greatest milestone of all for the children in our residential

program when five children graduated from the program. Each of them successfully completed the program and positively

influenced the other children in the homes. Here are tHeir HigHligHts:

Residential Program Graduates – Summer ‘10

Heather (Girls 2) – • Came in with anger issues and extreme disrespect toward her mother.• Now: She controls her anger outbursts and is much more obedient toward her mother. Her mother is excited about her return home.

Mark (Boys 1) – • Came in with what his mother described as “a deceitful and manipulative” nature.• Now: He is much more honest and helpful. His mother reports he is trustworthy at home.

Joshua (Boys 2) – • Came in with anger issues, extreme disrespect and defiance, and his mother essentially could not make him do anything.• Now: He is very polite, respectful, and fun to be around. His mother is also excited about his return home.

Joey (Boys 3) – • Came in with peer pressure issues; he would do whatever his friends were doing and it was usually wrong. His mother reported extreme disrespect and refusal to do what he was told.• Now: He is respectful to all adults and he is very helpful. He has also developed a plan to avoid getting in trouble with his friends.

Robby (Boys 3) – • Came in very disrespectful to his parents, did not do his work in school, and would never take responsibility for his actions.• Now: His father says he is very respectful at home, he ended the school year with A’s and B’s, and the few times he made poor decisions, he readily admitted to them.
