IN THIS ISSUE
When we say “New Year’s” we often think of January 1st.
But the beginning of the year could be thought of as happening at differ-ent times. For example, the “school year” in the United States traditional-ly starts in September, often after La-bor Day. But the school year starts at different times in different countries – in Japan it starts in April! (By the way, WELCOME BACK DHARMA SCHOOL STUDENTS!!!)
We often forget the arbitrary na-ture of time – our human constructs seem so natural to us that we rarely question them. But there are also nat-ural rhythms – days, seasons, years –
related to the rotation of our planet and its trips around the sun. Ohigan (our service is on Sunday, September 15) is the recognition of one of these rhythms – the Autumn Equinox, when day is balanced with night. It helps remind us about our connec-tion with nature. It also helps us bal-ance out our own lives. Because this is what Buddhism is about – living our lives as best we can, balanced in-ternally in our bodies & minds and externally with our families, friends & communities.

BUSSHIN SEPTEMBER 2013
Dharma School News...By Maya lawReNce
Hope you are all enjoying your summer. Just a reminder, we
start back in Dharma School on September 8th; we are all looking forward to seeing you all!!
Traditionally, we have three spec-tacular summer activities and we are so glad so many of you can partici-pate in them. I thought you might like to hear what some of our stu-dents have to say about them. The biggest activity is the bazaar!
Kiyomi Nomura likes working in the different booths and seeing family and friends that she doesn’t regularly see.
Mayumi Nomura likes playing the games and working in the game booths with friends.
Jordan Kim says the best part about the bazaar was working in the game booth.
Conor Kim says his favorite was working in the booth. “It was
Service at the picnic.
Devin Cho receiving his graduation gifts
Dharma students having fun at the balloon toss
Delicious BBQ was enjoyed by all…
actually fun! And I liked playing the games also.”
Kelsey Hirota says that “our ba-zaar has the best prizes.” She really liked the earphones and stuffies.
Rachel Hirota says her favorite thing was the udon broth. Rachel also really liked selling the imaga-wayaki from table to table. She had fun doing that because she made a lot of money!
Ryan Yoshida likes helping at the game booth.
Sean Yoshida likes the prize booth at the bazaar.
Garrett Kamita loves the lollipop game the best because every ticket was a guaranteed lollipop winner.
Glenn Kamita likes the inari sushi best.
Grant Kamita likes playing bingo the best.
We are so glad that you all enjoyed the Bazaar!
I wasn’t able to attend the Picnic (our second summer activity) this
year, but I heard that it was, once again, a great hit! Thank you to Ron Nomura and his family for chairing the picnic. It’s a lot of work, and he does a fabulous job. And Thank You to the Jr. YBA for chairing the games.
Happy birthday to our students born in August:Alyssa Cho, Glenn Kamita, Samia Neishi, Sydney Wong. We’ll be celebrating your
birthdays on September 8, so I hope you can be there. Wishing you all the best!

BUSSHIN SEPTEMBER 2013
Hello Fellow BCA Temples:
The Mountain View Buddhist Temple ABA will be hosting an
“oldies” dance on Saturday, Octo-ber 19. After two successful dances in 2009 and 2010, we are bring-ing back the popular Asian band “Somethin’ Else” to once again provide live music for this event. The funds raised will go towards improvements to the Temple’s au-dio system, linking together the various structures on the property during special religious services.
On the next page is a flyer with all of the specific informa-tion, with the hopes that mention can be made in your September and October temple newsletters.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].
Thank-you, and Gassho,Joanne C. MakishimaMVBT ABA Dance Committee
