Buddhist Education News By Gayle NoGucHi

After such a busy month, January was very calm. The

biggest excitement was the visit of Reverend Kodo Umezu, Bishop of the Buddhist Churches of America, to our temple. He performed the Kieshiki Affirmation Service for 49 individuals which was an auspicious number since the 49’ers were playing for the NFC championship that same day (un-fortunately, they lost). Reverend Umezu was also the guest speaker for our Ho-onko Service. Many of us remember Reverend Ume-zu’s stories, oops, I mean Dharma talks, from when he was the resi-dent minister at BCO. It was great to have him back; like old home week; he continues to be entertain-

ing while at the same time teach-ing us about Buddhism. It was also great to have Mrs. Janet Umezu back; she even did a reading which we enjoyed.

I’m afraid I have no stories to tell this month (my daughter, Tara will be disappointed; she might even say my article is boring). I can certainly relate to Reverend Harry Bridge’s article last month about the pressure of writing a monthly article. I’m not so fearful of failing as much as being boring…or are those one and the same?

Dharma School News...By Maya lawReNce

Happy New Year Everyone. I know I wished you all Happy

New Year last month, but I feel that every month, week, day, or hour is a new one that affords us opportunities to practice the Golden Chain: I must keep my link bright and strong, I will try to be kind and gentle to every living thing, I will try to think pure and beautiful thoughts, say pure and beautiful words and do pure and beautiful deeds!! My happiness and the happiness of others depends on what I do right now!

And Congratulations! We reached our goal of 300 items for the Alameda County Food Bank – so come to church on Feb. 23 and have an ice cream sundae Sunday with the Dharma School! As a mat-ter of fact, we collected over 300 items, and the Food Bank has sent us a certificate for collecting 150 pounds of food. Even though we have reached our goal, please keep on bringing in nonperishable food items. We are keeping one of the

collection bins so you can continue to donate. People in our area are hungry – and we can help! And you are practicing one of the Six Param-ita – DANA – or Giving.

We would love to have new teachers in the Dharma School and make it more of a Cooperative Dhar-ma School. Mr. Noguchi, our Mid-dle School Teacher, will not be able

to teach next year as he will be Presi-dent-Elect of our church. So, we will be asking parents and friends to help us with teaching. The present teach-ers will make lesson plans, or help you make a lesson on Buddhism. You are all already great teachers – look at how wonderful your children are! You have been teaching them all along! I am planning a meeting with parents and interested friends so that we can schedule in time as assistants and teachers. More information to follow.

And our first Teaching Assistant is Martha Castro! She is in Ninth Grade and has been helping with the 3,4,5th grade class. Thank you, Martha!

Welcome Lanae Wong to the Dharma School! She is in fourth grade and her parents are Darrin Wong and Lori Neishi-Wong. We are so glad you are joining us!!

Ho-on ko Service and Kieshiki Affirmation Service

BCO Members who participated in the Kieshiki Affirmation Service on Sunday, January 12, 2014. Speacial guest speaker, Reverend Kodo Umezu, the Bishop of the Buddhist Church-es of America, who also conducted the Kieshiki Affirmation Service.

The first month of the new year is fast coming to an end and we

are going into the second month with plans to hold our New Year’s luncheon on Thursday, Febru-ary 20, 2014. Miyo Shigemoto and Alice Shibata will be chair-ing the food portion of our gather-ing. Our Rev. Bridge has offered to

handle the entertainment end of the gathering.

On Thursday, March 6, 2014, our plans are to visit the Graton, a new casino located in the town of Rohnert Park, which is situated about 40 miles north of the Bay Area. Several board member fellows have volunteered to transport us

to the location since buses are not allowed at this time. Thank you in advance to these generous fellows for their dana.

Per usual, we are working on plans for future fun things to do and see for our enjoyment. We wish all a healthy and happy 2014.

Hello again from the Jr. YBA! In the beginning of February, the Jr. YBA went on the annual Bay District Ski Trip. Here, we got

to enjoy winter to its fullest in Tahoe with the other chapters. Thanks to everyone who contributed and ensured that it was successful. The Jr. YBA also had another Udon Luncheon shortly afterwards, which was made possible by our wonderful cooks.

Looking ahead, a number of Jr. YBA members will be acting as teaching assistants again for the Dharma School on March 9th; so, we are looking forward to seeing your children there.Tournament on May 25th to 26th.

Handy people needed!

The BCO has joined EWASTE 4 GOOD, a

group that collects E WASTE and recycles it! The com-pany then gives the BCO a portion of the proceeds. E WASTE is basically anything electronic that you want to get rid of: TV’s, computers, fax machines, copiers, cell phones, small appliances, speakers, scanners, vacuum cleaners, video games, pow-er tools, stereos. Members of the church can schedule a pick-up by calling 1-800-317-3112 or by going on-line to www.eWaste4good.com. EWASTE4GOOD will pick up from your home for free. Your pick-up time may vary a few days, depending on their schedule. In addition to being a fund-raiser for the church, you are also recycling equipment and keeping it out of land-fills. That is good for everybody!! Flyers are available at church. You can also contact Maya Lawrence ([email protected]) if you have questions.

In MemoriamThe Buddhist Church of Oakland extends its deepest condolences to the families of:

Mitsune “Mitsy” TanisawaJanuary 8, 2014

May the family members find comfort and solace in the Nembutsu, Namu amida butsu.

The Business Committee would like to have a list of names and numbers of people who can do “handyman” type work, including basic construc-

tion, cabinet work, electrical and plumbing work for various small jobs that come up on the church properties, including the adjacent apartment building. We are looking for volunteers, to join our Maintenance Crew, or reasonably priced professionals, who can be on call for odds and ends that come up, sometimes on short notice (ie. plumbing). If you are one of these people please notify Mark Shimamoto in person or by phone 510-465-1011. Thank you!

Thank you to all of you who submitted your greetings for the 2013 December Busshin. Thank you for your very generous donations which totaled $720.00 towards the General Fund.

Just added to our BCO Library is the new publication Teri-

yaki Priest – Tales from the Realm of Gratitude by Reverend Jerry Kyosei Hirano. With humor and humility, can-dor and compassion, Reverend Hirano shares experiences from his own life in essays he has written over the past 25 years of being a Jodo Shinshu minister.

Through his insightful reflections he invites us to look deeper where we get a glimpse of the nembutsu teachings that are constantly com-ing to us through our daily lives. Reverend Hirano presents the essays in four sections: birth, old age, sickness, and death – the types of sufferings the Buddha taught in the Four Noble Truths. However, far from

being pessimistic, Reverend Hi-rano shows that all experiences lead us to the nembutsu where we can learn what it truly means to be human: that we are embraced by the wisdom and compassion of Amida Buddha exactly as we are, and with this realization, we enter the realm of gratitude. Namo Amida Butsu.
