A common predicamentthat a variety of wildanimals find themselvesin involves netting ofsome sort - e.g. sportsnetting, garden nettingor pond protection.Hedgehogs are one of

the most common casu-alties of netting inci-dents, regularly gettingcaught up in garden orfootball nets which cancause terrible injuriesleading to major infec-tions and even amputa-tions on occasions. Grass snakes that like

to frequent gardenponds, hunting for smallfish and frogs to eat, cansurprisingly get entan-gled in the netting thatpeople cover their pondswith, mainly to protecttheir fish from herons. Having to extricate

grass snakes from thissituation is a fairly com-mon call for us and wehave also been called toherons that have notbeen put off by the netcovering and havebecome caught in the netwhile trying to takeadvantage of a fish sup-per.Over the years we

have also seen somenasty injuries caused totawny owls which seento have a knack of get-ting themselves caughtup in football netting. Our latest fox call-out,

although not involvingfootball netting, does

however involve thesport – the call was to afox with a football stuckon its head! This certain-ly was a new one for us!Foxes are very inquis-

itive and they have beenknown to get themselvesinto all sorts of predica-ments because of theirnosiness. We have dealt with

foxes with tin cans ontheir heads, one situa-tion where a fox had puthis head into a hole in atree trunk and thencouldn’t get it out again, but never a footballbefore. The fox was spotted

by a dog walker close toa footpath and we werecalled out see if we couldhelp. Because he couldn’t

see anything with hishead wedged firmlyinside the football, hewas easy to catch, theball was removed andwith no physicalinjuries, probably just abit of embarrassment, hewas set free to go on hisway. How he managed to

get the ball on his headwe just don’t know butthere was probablysomething inside it suchas a mouse or a slugwhich the fox wasattracted to.Visit our website at

There have been at leasttwo buildings on the siteand it was probably builtabout the same time asthe Abbey in the 12thcentury. The monks caused a

leat, known today as theMill Avon, to be dug tosource waterpower fromthe River Avon nearKing John’s Bridge. After the Dissolution

of the Monastery, themill continued in privatehands, the last millersbeing the Rice familywho left the business in1929. Photograph A, from

Rosemary Wherrett’scollection, was taken

after new sluice gates forbetter flood preventionhad been installed in1935, when the buildingappeared to be in adilapidated state. However, it did subse-

quently thrive as a café,becoming a favouritehaunt for tourists arriv-ing by charabancs in theinter-war years. Then it was marketed

as Abel Fletcher’s Mill, because of its fictitiousconnection with theVictorian melodrama,John Halifax Gentleman, written by Mrs. Craik.Even a recently arrivedresident, such as me,can remember enjoyingmedieval banquets therein the 1980s.Photograph B, from

John Dixon’s collection,shows Abbey Mill in1927.However, since 2003,

(photograph C) it hasbeen converted into lux-urious apartments. What a pity it is that

no obligation wasimposed to maintain theone water wheel, stillevident from Mill Street.Photo D shows thewheel in 1927, which isone of four waterwheelsinstalled in 1793.

A good read about the storms thatin 1900 devastated Galveston inTexas. This is the background anddenouement on which the story ofthe three central characters hangs.

Catherine Wainwright from Ohio,a piano teacher with a past; detailsof which are divulged.

Oscar Williams, an old schooltime admirer, recently widowed, dairy farming in Galveston.

Nan Odgen, Oscar's housekeeperand his wife's friend who promisedto look after Oscar's son.

Catherine renews correspondencewith Oscar, who eventually offersmarriage, a route of escape forCatherine to a new life away fromshame and creeping poverty.

Galveston is a cultural and geo-graphical shock - the heat, the dust, the basic lifestyle. A quick mar-riage and failed honeymoon nightfinds the shocked Catherine out onthe farm. Here the story movesfrom Catherine's account to Nan's

and backto her own, intermingling. So we see the relationship betweenthe two women, the jealousy ofNan, the state of shock and bewil-derment by the new bride.

After a rocky start Oscar andCatherine start to build a life togeth-er, and the welcoming party for hisnew wife provides the backgroundfor the impending storm duringwhich both women are forced toface nature's adversities, uncoveringboth strengths and weaknesses.

The book concludes with thestorm, how it effects both Oscar andCatherine, the dairy and for Nan,her life there and that of her familyand the community within andaround Galveston.

This July the girls cel-ebrated their 50thBirthday in style. The Brownies had

great fun at their all-dayparty learning circusskills, stilt walking andjuggling. They made Owl table

party were some of theex leaders and localcommissioners includ-ing one of the firsthelpers Violet Brookesand the current DivisionPresident CouncillorClaire Wright who pre-sented Sophie Bensonex. Twyning GuideLeader and DistrictCommissioner with her20 year service award.

Exhibitor numberswere up by nearly athird; last year we had500 cars and a decentline up of wonderfulbikes, but ran out ofspace in the arena byearly afternoon. Thisyear we increased thesize to accommodate700 cars to include thosethat couldn’t get in lastyear – and with greatstaffing, managed topack them in, BUT, bylate lunch, once again,we ran out of space andhad to park around 70

late-comers outside!There were some truly

great entries, including abeautifully restored1904 Peugeot and a veryrare 1904 De DionBouton; a local carowned by Mrs AngelaTrevelyan, wife ofBugatti Owners Clubchairman, CharlesTrevelyan. The signifi-cance of this little singlecylinder 970 cc beauty isthat it has never misseda ‘London to BrightonRun’ in all these years!

The front row of the

Arena was graced withsix Ferraris and a hugeline up of elderly Minis,as well as some morerare and exotic machin-ery, some of whichlooked as though it hadnever left the showroom.American ‘muscle’ wasprovided by a gorgeous1958 Corvette as well assome much prizedCadillac, LincolnChevrolet ‘Land Yachts’,typical of the ‘60’s’. Theline-up of bikes rangedfrom a 100 year oldTriumph; (one of only 8running machines left inthe world that ran in thevery first ‘Pioneer Run’in 1930), to some rareHondas, BSA’s andTriumphs. The exceptionally

good ‘Haywood Sisters’came back again thisyear, by popular requestto entertain us with peri-od classic songs and‘Barrie with his accor-dion’, a long standingstalwart of Rotary, alongwith a Dixieland JazzQuintet, added somevariety to a busy musicalschedule. This year, some really

good hot food was pro-vided by ‘Susie’s outsidecatering, serving freshlyhome-made burgers and

bangers on the Southside of the field andDanters Burger and can-dyfloss on the Northside. Rotary suppliedtea, coffee, sandwiches, bacon rolls and cakesand will do so again nextyear. A very efficient barwas run by theTewkesbury branch of‘The Royal BritishLegion’, a very worthypartner to this Festival. We want them back yearon year, to which they’vekindly agreed. The trade stands and

craft market stalls forthe most part, had adecent day of trading; Iwalked round the arenato ask them about theirday. Just about everyonesaid they wanted tocome back next year, sothat’s what I call a result!Tewkesbury Classic

Vehicle Festival nextyear will be held onSunday 23rd August;put it in your diary.

As forecast the dayproduced spells of heavyrain, not least in themorning as the variousstallholders arrived toset up their gazebos. These were the worst

When I was a headteacher I often saw thatthe parents were moreanxious than the chil-dren.

As a result I thoughtyou may appreciatesome thoughts on howyou can best prepareyour child and yourselffor this special day.

Give children controlover what they can con-trol.

Offering simple choic-es may help calm nervesand get kids excited. Forexample, if you pick outa new backpack orlunchbox, let your childchoose the colour.

If you shop for schoolsupplies, let your childfind the items in thestore and check them offon your list.

The day before schoolstarts let your childchoose clothes for thefirst day unless, ofcourse there is a laiddown uniform.— butkeep veto power! Youare always the finalarbiter.

Ask your child com-pelling questions.Specific questions willhelp your child imaginewhat school will be likeand help you talk aboutthe fun stuff and thehard stuff. You mightask, "What do you thinkthe hardest part ofschool is going to be?"

"Is there anything thatworries you about start-ing school?"

"What are you reallylooking forward to?"

Describe what willhappen on the first day.

Keep in mind that achild starting school forthe first time or going toa new school may have ahard time imaginingwhat it will be like

Talking about thebasic sequence of theday will help your childmake a mental picture of

what to expect. Kidsform images in theirminds, and reviewingthe process in detail willmake things more famil-iar and less scary on thefirst day of school.

Don’t talk about howmuch you will miss yourchild. Don’t let your ownworries get in the way.

Walk your child intoschool (or put her on theschool bus) and thentalk to other parents ifyou need support. Yourchild has enough toworry about on the firstday without soothingyour anxieties.

Meet the teachertogether and take a lookaround the new class-room for things you

know your child enjoysIf your child gets

upset, acknowledge thefeeling and ask for sug-gestions.

Ask the teacher forhelp. If your child won’tlet you go, turn to theteacher. She probablyhas a lot of experiencewith this.

Make a swift exit.Take your cue from theteacher and from yourchild, but when it’s timeto go, go. A quick exitmay be more useful toyour child than a drawn-out goodbye.

You can often callschool later to check onhow a young child isdoing. Good luck!

Anti- social behaviourcan be any behaviourwhich makes you feelharassed, alarmed ordistressed and can affectanyone including com-munity groups and busi-nesses.

There are manyexamples some of whichare listed here:

• Noise• Rowdy behaviour suchas shouting, swearingand fighting• Intimidation of neigh-bours and othersthrough threats or actualviolence• Harassment, includingracial harassment orsectarian aggression• Verbal abuse• Systematic bullying of

children in public recre-ation grounds, on theway to school or even onschool grounds. (If nor-mal school disciplinaryprocedures do not stopthe problem)• Abusive behaviouraimed at causing dis-tress or fear to certainpeople, for example, eld-erly or disabled people• Driving in an inconsid-erate or careless way, forexample, drivers congre-gating in an area for rac-ing• Dumping rubbish• Animal nuisance, including dog fouling• Vandalism, propertydamage and graffiti.

These crimes andincidents can be a dev-

astating to our commu-nities and individuals.

No one should have tosuffer the consequencesof this type of behaviour. In Tewkesbury theBorough Council , Police,Housing providers andRestorative Gloucester-shire work together toprovide a multi-agencyapproach to the problem.

If you are sufferingfrom any of these issuesthere is help available. There are also severalthings that you can doyourself to assist suchas keep a log of thedates, times and dura-tion of the anti-socialbehaviour this will beuseful if the matter goesto court.

In our communities Ialso believe that we allhave to be reasonableand tolerant of others iffor example your neigh-bours are having a bar-becue and they are play-ing music and it hashappened on one occa-sion during the summerholidays is this propor-tionate?

It may well be that aquiet word is all that isneeded to get the musicturned down.

I hope that this hashelped these issues canoften be resolved satis-factorily by way of medi-ation, however if thematter persists you canask for a review by con-tacting www.restorative-gloucestershire.co.uk orby calling 01452754555.

GETTING THERIGHT HAT-ITUDE‘Tewkesbury Red Roses’ is a new branch of anational society aims to bring together womenwant to experience fun and friendship on a morefulfilling level.

The Red Hat Societybegan as a result of a fewwomen deciding to greetmiddle age with verve, humour and élan. The RHSpassion is to promote justthat.

Initially started as a socialorganization for women age50 and over, The Red HatSociety now attracts womenin all age demographics through both the "Red Hat"(those over 50) and the "Pink Hat" designations(those under 50).

The Red Hat Society has become the internation-al society dedicated to reshaping the way womenare viewed in today’s culture.

Research has shown that having fun on a regularbasis promotes a happy life! And, since we are allgrowing older day by day, we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together.

Two inaugural meetings of the Tewkesbury RedRoses will be held this month. The first gathering ison Monday 15th September and the second is onSaturday 20th September. Both will be held at TheGeorgian Room, The Royal Hop Pole, Church Street,Tewkesbury from 10am to 12 noon.

READERS WRITE to Tewkesbury Direct

The Swilgate Weir, 1909 (Derek Round’s Collection)

Dear Tewkesbury Direct,

“I read that there is a planto remove the weir fromthe River Swilgate

“It’s not the weir - it’sthe road bridge under theGloucester Road wherethe problem lie: the arch-way is too small to takethe flow of the waterwhen we have a flood.

“It would appear thatanother part ofTewkesbury’s history isabout to be destroyed.

“The first bridge acrossthe Swilgate was built in1791 at the bottom ofGanders Lane. Some timeafter this the originalwooden weir was takendown and a new stoneone was constructed.

“One reason for theweir being built was tokeep the river level highto prevent the unpleasantstink from raw sewageand swill at low water”

Yours sincerely,Derek Round,Tewkesbury.
