Issue 78 September 18, 2014 It has been quite a while since I have had an article in our Tyler Team News. I think it is important to all of us to see the most important articles each month and that does not always include something from me. We have a couple of very nice family events coming up. The company picnic is September 27 th and we are all invited along with our families. Our planning committee always does a great job and I would love to see us have the biggest turn out that we have ever had. We also have the upcoming Christmas Party on December 6 th for all team members and one guest. This is a first class event and I hope that all of us will attend. We also have our first aid/cpr training, and our wellness day coming up which is also for all team members and their families. Please take full advantage of all the events that are planned for you. There are a lot of rumors which circulate about Tyler Pipe. I can not tell you how many times that I have had people see my Tyler Pipe shirt and say they thought that we were out of business. I guess that is both good and bad. The good is that we are an extremely clean operating facility and when folks drive up and down 69 they do not see any emissions. I guess the bad would be that a lot of you and myself are actively involved in numerous charitable events and we would think that would be acknowledged and that the entire area would know that not only are we still in business, but we are doing extremely well. I was told recently that Tyler Pipe would be taking one week a month off for the rest of the year. At this time it is news to me and there are no plans with the exception of Thanksgiving week, the week of Christmas, and possibly the week of New Years. These are all prescheduled as Maintenance Shutdown Weeks. I was also told that at the end of the year that Tyler Pipe would be shutting down for good. I have no idea how anybody could come up with something like that, but I can ensure you that is also news to me. Tyler Pipe is an integral part of the McWane Plumbing Group and an integral part of the entire McWane organization. I expect Tyler Pipe to be here for a long time. Again, do not let rumors like these spread. If you hear something that you have questions about; please feel free to ask me. There are no hidden agendas at Tyler Pipe. Again, please mark your calendars and plan to attend our upcoming events. We hope to see all of you there. September 2014 We had such an amazing time at Fire Mountain last year that the vote was unanimous that we go back there again this year. You still have time to get your tickets and maybe a tee shirt (if any shirts are still available ) to attend the Tyler Pipe annual family picnic. When: Saturday ~ September 27 Time: 10 am ~ 3 pm Where: Fire Mountain Amusement Park ~ Tyler Lunch will be served from 11:30 to 1:30 pm Deadline is Tuesday, September 23rd to get your tickets. Dinner will be delicious BBQ catered by Bakers Ribs out of Canton. Family day tee shirts will be distributed on a first come first serve basis. Bingo games, prize drawings, rides, rides and more ride. Don’t miss out on the fun. Bring the kids and just let them run wild and enjoy all the rides and activities, you will be very sorry if you miss it.

It has been quite a while since I have had an article in our Tyler Team News. I think it is important to all of us to see the most important articles each month and that does not always

We had such an amazing time at Fire Mountain last year that the vote was unanimous that we go back there again this year. You still have time to get your tickets and maybe a tee shirt (if any shirts are still available ) to attend the Tyler Pipe annual family picnic.

After completing 76 years of combined service, Louis Cumby and Vernon Coats decided they

were hanging up their metatarsal boots and shutting the doors

on their Hub Core machine forever as they both mark their

last day in the plant on Wednesday August 27. Mr.

Cumby will finish his career at Tyler Pipe with 41 years of

service and Mr. Coats 35 years of service.

Both of these gentlemen were overwhelmed by the

retirement celebration that was put on in their honor. Pizza,

salad, drinks and two HUGE cakes for each one of them were

served to EVERYONE in the plant; even those on the 2nd and 3rd shift were treated with a

catered meal. Being that Mr. Cumby actually worked on the 2nd shift, he wanted me to

make sure they were included in the celebration as well. So of course I was happy to oblige.

I also surprised them both with a collection of special gifts that included a Tyler Pipe blue

mantel clock engraved with their name, years of service and a special message. Mr. Coats

said to me when he opened the clock, “Faye, I don’t need a clock anymore, I can get up

whenever I want now.” I laughed and said you make a good point, but this clock has a

special message that says “your time belongs to YOU now.” He smiled and said, “I guess

you’re right.” Other gifts included a mixture of Tyler Pipe logo items such as ball cap,

shirts, rain jackets, etc. Fellow team members took time to stop by and wished them the best of luck in their retirement.

Both of them will be greatly missed in the Core Room and throughout the entire plant. Mr. Coats made a point of calling me

the next day to say “Thank you. He said, “I didn’t expect anything like that; it was so nice for you to do something like that

and I just want to thank you for what you did.” Getting phone calls like that makes it all worthwhile.

Training for the annual CPR/First aide /AED course was conducted by Travis Edwards, Tyler Pipe second shift EMT , on Friday September 5th and all that attended now have a greater understanding of the steps involved to save a life. All Tyler Pipe team members were invited to attend along with family members and any friends who would be interested in the training and acquiring certifica-tion. The group had a good time and felt the course was very worthwhile.

Yes, you read that correctly. This year our annual health fair will be held in October as always however we are adding something special to it. For any team member , and I mean ANY & ALL TEAM MEMBERS, who participates in the upcoming biometric screening, you will be given a $50.00 Wal-Mart gift card right there on the spot. It’s that easy! The screening will be conducted by Summit Health and will consist of cholesterol screening, blood pressure checks, blood sugar screening, and sleep screening.

UT Health will also be present to give FREE flu shots to all team members as well as to their dependents. This will be the ONLY opportunity for you to take advantage of a free flu shot and the convenience of having the ability to do this testing here at Tyler Pipe in a relaxed setting. Flyers will be posted thru out the plant and you can also contact Jennie Shephard in the Safety department for further information.

For the year 2014, it is not uncommon to see a group of Tyler Pipe team members out volunteering their time for an event that is of a worthy cause. So to see Tyler Pipe out volunteering to run in the first American Cancer Society 5k was not a surprise. On Saturday, September 13th a few Tyler Pipe team members and their friends all volunteered to run to help raise money for the ongoing research of

Cancer. We are very proud of this group commitment to continue to give their time to help out in any way.

Only one more event left before we select 10 lucky winners to attend the last season

home game of the Texas Rangers. Yes, I know the Rangers are absolutely

HORRIBLE this year, but that’s not going to stop us from having a GREAT TIME.

Watching the last game against the Oakland A’s and enjoying it in an Executive Suite

Did you know ~ Adult vaccinations

You’re not too old for a shot in the arm when it comes to vaccinations

You probably know you need a flu shot each fall to keep healthy. But did you

realize you also need vaccinations against other common – and serious – diseases?

Chief among these are pneumonia, shingles, and a group of diseases whose vaccine is known as TDAP – tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). So,

here’s a brief guide.

“The pneumonia vaccine protects you against the most common type of bacterial pneumonia. Usually, you get the shot once, when you turn 65,” says family

medicine physician Ryan Menard, MD.

This vaccine is especially important if you have a chronic illness such as heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or immune disorders like HIV/

AIDS, Dr. Menard says.

“Pneumonia can cause devastating illness or death if you have a chronic

condition,” he says.

Shingles is triggered by the virus that causes chicken pox.

“It hides in our nerve cells and can come back with a fury, causing chronic nerve pain and a terrible rash. If it infects cells in your eyes or ears, it can permanently damage

them,” Dr. Menard says.

The shingles vaccine is approved for anyone over 50 years of age. Most private insurance companies pay for it if you’re 60 or older. It protects you even if you’ve had

shingles before.

It’s a good idea to get a TDAP booster every 10 years. It protects you from tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis. Tetanus used to be known as “lockjaw” because of its horrible muscle spasms. And before the vaccine, whooping cough caused thousands of

deaths in the United States.

In addition, adults born after 1957 also need the MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, Dr. Menard says. Adults born before 1957 likely

had these illnesses and are immune.
