Why send your children to Sunday school?

~ Teri Burns, Minister to Children and Families

When Pastor Josh asked me to write the cover of this month’s Tabletalk on the subject, “Why should parents send their children to Sunday school?,” I, of course, did what anyone else would do: I Googled it. I found a bulletin insert entitled “10 Reasons to Bring Your Child to Sunday School,” by Tony Kummer. In it, Kummer states that he wrote it to list some benefits of Sunday school attendance as an encouragement to families. Here are a few of them, with a few tweaks/additions of my own (in italics):

* Age-targeted teaching: Where else can your kids get Biblical instruction that’s focused toward their developmental abilities? All of our classes, for 2-year-olds through 5th grade, use curriculum designed specifically for each age.

* It’s fun! Sunday school isn’t Disneyland, but our teachers do work hard to teach the Bible in ways that are relevant and fun for kids. Without fun, kids won’t want to come back. We incorporate

singing, skits, crafts, movies, and, of course, Bible study in all our classes.

* Spiritual mentors: A dedicated teacher can be a Christian role model who supports you and helps inspire the faith of your child. One of the best parts of my job is to help cultivate leaders, especially

among our youth, and then sit back and watch God’s magic happen — awesome!

* Systematic Bible learning: Our curriculum is designed to give a broad foundation, so children will understand how all the parts of scripture point to Christ. In Sunday school we teach and re-teach

(children need repetition) the stories of the Bible. In 3rd grade we “Walk Through the Bible” (curriculum written by Leann Thompson), learning more about how this wonderful book is laid out and

how to use it. The 4th and 5th grade curriculum is theme-based. This year we will explore “Friends and Enemies,” Security,” and “Priorities,” using Bible texts to better understand how these words relate to the lives of 9 and 10 year olds.

* Praying teachers: Our teachers consistently pray for your child’s faith to grow. Coming to Sunday School gives another occasion for God to answer those requests. Enough said!

As parents in a world that is much different from the one we grew up in, we have many decisions that need to be made. Should choosing whether or not your children attend Sunday school really be one of them?

Things are different these days; but God is the same. He longs for us to know Him and learn about Him, and Jesus has so much to teach and tell us. Christian education is a precious gift. You as parents and we as ministers to children, youth, and family partner together to bring this gift to our children. It’s a gift that will continue to grow, and the knowledge our children gain will be of comfort to them for all of their lives.

But it starts with parents — parents who put church and Sunday school attendance as a priority. Classes are starting. See you downstairs — where all the FUN is!!

Our September Worship Theme

In the month of September, we kick off Sunday school, Christos, confirmation, and many other activities (see p. 6 for details), and we return to three services on Sunday mornings. In worship, we will bring a focus to prayer, inviting us all to an enriched prayer life with the common phrase, “Let us pray.” We want Family of Christ to be a praying church, where we are encouraged to pray for each other, pray for our church, pray for the world, and let God bless us and change us through our prayers. Our great guiding verses will be Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” We are supporting our theme in several ways: Prayer resources will be made available, especially during the vigils held on Sept. 9 & 30 from 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM.

We’ll encourage specific use of our new church labyrinth on Sept. 30 (see facing page for more info about the vigils & the labyrinth walk). We’ll provide you with a fun way to say table grace — a paper handout which can be crafted into a cube & then rolled on your table like dice, so you can pray the prayer that lands heads-up. “Prayer Minute” is posted on our website — click on the link and hear a prayer prayed for you by a different voice for each of the thirty days of September. And we’ll focus on prayer during worship.

Listed below are September worship dates, along with each Sunday’s theme, preacher, text, and music group leadership. Let us join together in prayer this September!

"The true church lives and moves and has its being in prayer." ~ Leonard Ravenhill

Prayer is an intentional and purposeful way that every individual — no matter of age, race or background — can deepen his or her personal relationship with God and connect in meaningful ways with other people. As one of Family of Christ’s central habits of faith,

prayer is fostered in a multitude of ways in our congregation, including a strong prayer chain ministry and a vibrant prayer shawl ministry,

both of which touch the lives of many people in our congregation and in the broader community.

In keeping with our September theme, we offer two prayer vigils this month: Tuesdays, September 9 & 30.

The sanctuary will be open from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Stop by, take a breath, & carve a time for meditation and prayer out of your busy day.

Quiet and reflective music will be played, candles will be available to light to honor specific prayer requests, and prayer resources will be provided. Please spread the word to

others who may be interested, especially those who are in a time of specific need.

On September 30, during the final hour of the prayer vigil, Pr Kristie will lead a labyrinth walk. For details, see below.

To wrap up our month focusing on prayer, on Tuesday, September 30,

Pastor Kristie will offer a labyrinth walk to anyone who is interested in learning more about

this form of contemplative prayer. Dressed for the weather,

we’ll meet at 6:00 PM out on the FoC labyrinth (look for the pavers on the lawn near the exit drive).

Pr Kristie will discuss the origins of this medieval form of pilgrimage,

and lead participants in experiencing some ways our own labyrinth may be used for individual meditation and prayer.

Pastor Kristie’s Book Club I have four bestsellers I want to read during the fall and winter months, and I am looking for conversation partners to savor them with. Two are novels, two are nonfiction. Two have been brought to the silver screen re-cently as major motion pictures; a third was highlighted on the cover of TIME magazine. All give people of faith plenty to chew on.

The books and discussion dates I am proposing are: The Giver by Lois Lowry, Thurs., Oct. 2 Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, Tues., Dec. 2 Learning to Walk in the Dark by Barbara Brown Taylor, Tues., Jan. 20 Aleph, by Paulo Coelho, Thurs., March 12.

We’ll gather in a casual setting to discuss each selection over a glass of wine or ginger ale and dessert at my home (2446 Highover Trail in Chan). ALL are invited; bring a friend or neighbor if you’d like. Come at 7:00 PM having read the book and ready to discuss it. Questions? Contact me at [email protected] or 952-934-5659.

The Giver, the 1994 Newbery Medal winner, has become one of the most

influential novels of our time. The haunting story centers on twelve-year-old Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the

Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community.

In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incor-rigible delinquent. As a teenager, he

channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But ... When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, [he] survived, adrift on a

foundering life raft. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity...

Doesn’t God work in the nighttime as well? In Learning to Walk in the Dark,

Taylor asks us to put aside our fears and anxieties and to explore all that God has to teach us “in the dark.” ... Through darkness we find courage, we understand the world in new ways, and we feel God’s presence around

us, guiding us through things seen and unseen. Often, it is while we are in the dark that we grow the most.

Book descriptions & pictures are from Amazon.com

In his most personal novel to date, internationally best-selling author Paulo

Coelho returns with a remarkable journey of self-discovery. Like the main character in his much-beloved The Alchemist, Paulo is facing a grave crisis of faith. As he seeks a path of spiritual renewal and growth, he decides to

begin again: to travel, to experiment, to reconnect with people and the landscapes around him.

Changes in Our Music Ministry Since we are in the midst of a change in our music ministry leadership, we have undergone a shift in

how we group our musicians as well. Praise for Him and River of Joy have served our congregation in many beautiful ways over the years, but with the arrival of a new Director of Music Ministry, we have asked those musicians to consider being part of a single group that will have multiple assignments in a

given month. This will combine various musicians together in ways that had already been happening, and we hope that can keep happening.

And we hope the start of a brand new group will also be an invitation to any who would like to be part of our music ministry but may have hesitated until now. The new director will be on board in

mid-September and will be busy right away getting to know our many wonderful musicians while also striving to help create joyful music for our worship services.

Andrea Jeitz will continue to be director and lead pianist for Exsoultation, which will continue to rehearse on Saturdays and typically lead music on

the third Sunday of the month at both the 9:15 and 10:45 AM services.

Ron Larson and Mary Renz will continue to co-lead Family of Christ Singers (choir), which will lead worship at 9:15 on the 2nd and 4th Sundays.

And we will get EPIC! (high school group) up and running again, as they’ll periodically lead one of our 10:45 worship services. Praise Unlimited (children’s choir) and Lux Aeterna (middle school

group) will provide music periodically as well, and our Sunday School children will also sing once in awhile, led by Beth and Solveig Nelson.

Mary Renz will continue working with a chamber group, flutes, and brass to enhance worship in a variety of ways. And we will again have volunteer Lynn Miller bringing together interested musicians

to be part of a bell choir that will rehearse weekly and play monthly.

LA LA LA LA LA! Time to warm up those voices and join Family of Christ Singers this fall! FoC Singers is the more traditional

choir, directed by Ron Larson and Mary Renz. Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:00. Our first rehearsal is Thursday, September 4. The choir sings on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at

the 9:15 AM service. New members are always welcome, & fall is an especially great time to join!
