2016 Denny McGonagle Member/Member Tournament – August 13th.

The club would like to thank everyone for playing in this year’s Denny McGonagle Member - Member and paid a little tribute to Denny. The event is a 27-hole tournament combining a 9-hole scramble, 9-hole best ball and a 9 hole modified alternate shot. Handicaps for each of the 9 hole events are based on a percentage of the team’s combined handicap. We had some great scores, great shots, a few skins and we only had to play a few holes in the rain. The winners receive gift certificates to the golf shop and our Champions will receive trophies on September 10th at our final MGA event. Information we need to know….As fall approaches, the club would like to remind everyone to make sure we have your most updated information, especially new mem-bers to the club. We are collecting data at the counter, so please make sure we have your email address and correct phone numbers. As winter approaches, the only way for you to stay informed is to follow us through email blasts and our newsletter.

For your Eyes and Ears..... Just a little information to all our members, it is important that everyone properly fixes ball marks, replaces divots and rakes the bun-kers. Anytime a golf ball lands on the green you make a mark, so to properly fix it, you push from the outsides to the middle and press down. Please do not pop up the turf, if you have any question, check out the cart sign or just ask one of the professional. Also, even though we have sand on the golf carts and on the tees for the walkers, when you take a divot, please replace it and sand around the edges, the bentgrass will grow back. We have seen numerous bunkers that are not getting raked after golf shots, please help out your fellow golfers and rake after your bunker. Let’s keep the Elks in great shape.

Club Fitting SpecialistLet the Professional staff at the Elks fit you with the proper equipment. When making the investment in your game, it is important to be fit for proper length, lie, shaft and grip. There are certain stores whose #1 goal is sell you equipment, not the right equipment, so come and experience a true outside fitting, where the flight of the golf ball can be seen for the entire distance not just the first fifteen feet into a net. Competitive pricing and experience is what you get from your professional staff at the Hamilton Elks Golf Club. Remember, I own my golf shop and I’m here to help you play this game better, so always check with your golf professional first before buying any equipment.

Greens Superintendent’s Report- 8/18/15Maintenance Employee Notes: Recently, there have been some closecalls with maintenance workers nearly getting hit by golf balls. It clearlystates in the golf course Rules of Play that, “Players shall not hit the balluntil maintenance workers are securely clear of possible injury”. Pleasebe patient and let the maintenance crew member mow that last pass on afairway, green or rough when they are in front of you.And please be sure, for example, the bunker crew knows you are hitting when they are doingtheir job. They will wait and watch for the ball.

Another recent issue that came up is members complaining directly tomaintenance employees. Workers are just doing what they are told to do.The Elks Rules of Play, Section XII: Complaint Procedures clearly statescomplaints should be directed to the Golf Professional for investigation, and if necessary, involve the Management Committee, to preserve thecourse and for the common good of the membership. On the other hand, many, many compliments have been passed along to the maintenanceemployees. They and I really appreciate it!

Bunker Renovation: Since my July 28th report, the bunker left of Blue4 green has been rebuilt. It was shortened in the back some, which willbecome a grass bunker after all bunkers are done for the year. Blue 8 onthe left side should be finished today and then work will start on the rightside bunker.

We would like to thank everyone who participated and donated to this year’s Benevolent Tournament, the event raised over $4,300 that will be used for Elks members in need. The event was a Four Person scramble with two separate divisions, open and mixed. This year we played the Red and White Golf Courses with 8-inch cups and it was amazing how well each of the teams putted and played. Here are the winners of each division and by the way, this event was handicapped based on the lowest teams combined handicap.

The Ryder Cup- September 26th

The teams for the 2015 Ryder Cup were shaken up this year with new captains and players. A program was established that every three years we will redraw for new teams. The new captains selected 24 new players through a draft system and paired up the matches based on handicaps. Wayne Rassel and Forrest Holger were captains of the Blue Team and Bud Stelzer along with Mike Basilone and Dave Thomas captained the Red Team. The event consists of three 9-hole events, a One Best Ball of the team, a Modified Alternate Shot and then 24 Singles matches. The Ryder Cup came down to the last two groups to finish with the Blue Team securing a victory for the first time with 25 1/2 to 22 1/2 point win. Thanks to the Captains for their hard work and all of the players who made the event such a success.

The Solheim Cup - September 27th

The Ladies Solheim Cup consists of three 9-hole events mirroring the Solheim Cup with a Best Ball event, Modified Alternate shot and Singles matches. The ladies play the event with full handicap and we had a total of 28 players this year. The Solheim Cup came down to the singles matches and a late rally from the Red Team. The Solheim Cup ended with a perfect 14 to 14 split of points which gave the Cup back to the Red Team. We would like to thank all 28 ladies for playing this year and the Captains for their hard work with team preparation.

Greens Superintendent’s Report- 10/28/15

Greens: The greens are still being mowed at .125” or 1/8” daily and double cut at least once a week. The verticut reels have been used weekly except a couple of weeks when the temperatures were in the 90’s and right after the Stampede and club championship when they were stressing and thinning from the 90 degree heat at that time too. And verticutting had to be suspended after topdressing and fertilizing to not bring the sand and fertilizer back to the surface. The Blue greens were core aerated on September 28th with ½” quad tines, which have very close spacing but produce fast healing holes. The holes were filled with USGA spec topdressing sand. Verticutting had to stop for a couple of weeks to not bring up more sand to the surface. The Red and White greens had to be aerated with smaller 3/8” quad tines September 19th and 20th because of a delayed outing and the Benevolent Tournament coming up. Half of the tines were removed after 2 passes on the Red practice green because the close, small tines were causing lifting of the turf from the amount of compaction. The Red and White greens were completed with half of the 3/8” quad tines in the machine and topdressed with the same sand. The growth regulator/stress reducer normally used was stopped 3 weeks before aeration and the October fertilizer application was applied 2 weeks ahead of the plugging, both to help them heal quicker before the Benevolent Tournament.

Projects: The record setting rain in June and July slowed down project work immensely along with routine maintenance. Sand bunker renovation on the Blue side was the 1st priority. The major part of the Blue bunker rebuilding project began in early July. Blue 4 right side was completed first, then the right front of Blue 9 green. These drains needed minimal work. The left side bunker at Blue 4 took a while. It was shortened in the back, making part of it a grass bunker later when it was cooler weather to lay sod in September, as my July report told. Two drains had to be installed to properly rebuild that one, along with very much sand. The greenside bunkers work at Blue 8 went fairly smooth. There was concern the left bunker wouldn’t drain

properly. But after reshooting the grade with the transit, it was decided to go the direction the original contractors went toward the catch basin in the fairway. Dr. McCoy from Ohio State University states that a 1/2% fall is adequate for bunker drainage. These two bunkers took more sand than anticipated, but should be good for the next five year. The left fairway bunker on Blue 8 was in bad shape, it had a drainage issue. The exit drain had 12’ of fall to the catch basin 100 feet toward the tee but when we turned a water hose on in it, water backwashed bad. There was a rise in the drain not allowing it to drain. A 100” trench, part of it 36” deep had to be dug to that catch basin to get correct fall. The bunker and trench turned out good. Blue 8 fairway bunker on the right side doesn’t need rebuilt at this time, as it drains and plays good. The sand supply was mostly depleted after that large bunker but we continued on. Blue 5 right fairway bunker is dug out, ready for drainage when sand arrives and the closest bunker to the tee left of the fairway is ¾ dug out. Work will resume quickly on it after fairway aeration and drier weather. All four ravines at Red 4 and at Blue 4 were mostly cleared from trees and brush that could block any shots and sight lines. They will need additional work this winter to ensure no in-season problems next year. Also the new driving range net was installed and should last many years with the new design. When the heat subsided in September, subsoil and then topsoil was placed in Blue 4 back grass bunker area. After compacting and grading, sod was purchased to place in the bunker and its bare surrounds. A 12” catch basin was installed in the lowest area to keep it dry. The extra sod was placed to the right of Blue 4 right bunker where the turf has a hard time surviving, along with to the back left of Blue 1 back tee where it was bare. Many irrigation repairs had to be made mostly on the 1972 single row irrigation system on the Red and White sides. Two places on White 6 fairway were repaired. Red 3 green valve pit had to be fixed, Red 3 tee valve needed repair along with the lake fill pump pipe from the river next to Blue 4 tee. The cleared ditch at White 2-8 was bush hogged again, seeded with a Ky. Bluegrass/ryegrass mix and strawed. The hydraulic spill area around the 2nd landing area of Red

8 fairway was seeded also, along with the main pipe repair at Blue 4 tee. There is still a small leak right of White 4 tee that leaks some days and doesn’t on others. It’ll be fixed soon. The long awaited catch basin the USGA agronomist recommended in the 1990’s that connects all pipes and eliminates the concrete catch area at Red 6 landing area has finally been installed. All the brick walls, old piping and enough soil were removed. The 4” clay pipe, 8” ADS pipe and the 6” pipe from Red 7 concrete pond from across Red 6 fairway were all fitted in perfectly. Subsoil had to be placed and compacted, then good topsoil the same. All that’s left do is sod around it. It will be sodded when the back bunker on Blue 9 has its bit of sand dug out, drain checked and topsoil added to make it ready for sod. I believe 1 pallet of bluegrass will do both jobs. Other recent jobs accomplished are the October fertilization of greens, tees and fairways at 1# of nitrogen per thousand square feet. A Thanksgiving application will be made and hopefully include some rough depending on budget. A new pear tree was planted to the left of Blue 1 cart path by the front tee. A new oak tree was planted at White 2 left of the fairway where the 2 large ash trees died from the emerald ash borer. All the record setting rain in June and July made the grub hunters happy. Our insecticide controls about 95% of the grubs but the moles, skunks and raccoons know where the other 5% are. I have trapped about 8 moles this late summer, fall and treated with post emergent insecticide where the skunks and raccoons are damaging. Red fairways were core aerated 10/26 with ¾” hollow tines. The sun and wind were perfect and the fairways turned out very good. The remnants of Hurricane Patricia has delayed doing White and Blue fairways for now. As of noon today, 3” of rain fell since last night. The White and Blue fairways will be aerated possibly as soon as Friday and finish next week early.

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015We are coming into the time of year where the Elks 93 newsletter will only be published every other month; so I want to mention several things that will be happening at the lodge during the November/December holiday season.

Remember that November 11 is Veterans Day. The Elks Grand Lodge has proclaimed the month of November as Veterans Recognition Month. We have several Veterans that are members of our lodge and to them I say “Thank you for your service.” Along with every other veteran that has served our country.

Since this newsletter will also cover December; I want to make sure everyone is aware that our lodge will conduct our “Empty Chair” memorial service on Sunday afternoon December 6 at 1:00 o’clock. This service is a memorial to our brethren who departed this life in 2015.

Breakfast with Santa Claus will be at the Lodge on Saturday December 12 at 9:30 a.m. Make sure to take a break from the Holiday rush and bring the kids, grandkids, nieces, and nephews so they can make sure Santa knows what is on their list before heading back to the North Pole. The Elks will provide Breakfast this year at no charge. Please contact Margaret in the lodge office on or before Monday December 7th to make your reservations so we’ll know how many to plan for.

Don’t forget to buy your tickets for the Elks New Year’s Eve Party! $150.00 per couple includes Live Music by “Stays in Vegas”, Appetizers, Buffet Dinner, Desert, Open Bar, and Champagne toast at midnight and a snack at 12:30 a.m. Sliver Tee will donate $20.00 per ticket back to the lodge. Purchase your tickets in the lodge office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or call Margaret at 513-887-4380 Ext. 14.

Finally, as we close out 2015 I want to personally thank the members of Hamilton Lodge #93 for your help and support. 2015 has been a great year for our lodge. Let’s keep the momentum going and make 2016 even better!

Board of Directors meeting will be held at 6 pm and Lodge meeting at 7 pm on the second Tuesday of November and December.
