Compass BSS Service “Rakes & Panes” is back up and fully operational!
We wish to welcome aboard Garry Scott our new BSS Enterprise Manager.
Garry is currently taking bookings for any of the above services which
Compass Rakes & Panes provide.
To book any of the services, please contact Garry at 0429.193.109 or at
[email protected] and feel free to pass on the great news to anyone
you think who might require our services!
Dear Parents and Friends,
Well our 2017 Charity Golf Day was a
great success with a full house of 29
teams and another 10 people for the
lunch. There was so much engagement…
and I’d even say ‘Love’ on the course
and in the room that it was just a
pleasure to be a part of it.
Of course the whole event could not
have gone ahead were it not for the
truly amazing support of Matt and the
team at Cricks Sunshine Coast. Right
from bringing a fleet of cars to the
course with banners adding excitement
and colour, putting up a $75,000 Alfa
Romeo as a Hole in One Prize, helping
bring so many people to the event
through to the unbelievably generous
donation of $30,000 to Compass at the
Lunch…
David’s
Round Up
this is far and away the greatest
partnership that we have enjoyed in
our 15 year history. And it is the young
people attending Compass who reap
the benefits so on their behalf… Thank
you Matt and all the Cricks team!
There are two side notes to the above
story. The first is that for nearly 4 years
Cricks Nambour and Noosa branches
have been buying our boxed sets of
jams, chutneys etc. made in Harvest
Kitchen and giving one away as a gift
with each new car sold. In addition
they have also donated funds from
their purchase of third party on each
vehicle and jointly over the 4 years this
sum has now totalled over $100,000.
The second side note is I see that
another of our Compass families has
recently bought a new car from Cricks
Sunshine Coast… and done just as they
promise – Driven away happy! Thank
you for supporting this business… and
you can do so knowing that as a
Compass member you will genuinely
receive VIP treatment and a great deal
on your new or used car. Do I sound
like a Cricks salesman? I hope so…
because I’m proud to know that I can
trust them to look after you the same
way they look after the young people
at Compass with their generous
support.
Please also remember that September
is the month where we launch the
Dollar a Day programme for Compass
Assistance Dogs. With the help of our
media partners – Sea and Mix FM, Win
TV and the Sunshine Coast Daily – we
will be trying to fundraise sufficient
funds to train 10 new puppies all of
whom will go on to making incredible
changes in the life of a child with a
disability. Imagine if someone could
have come to you with the offer of an
Assistance Dog to help share the load
in your family… that’s what we will be
able to do… with your help. You can go
to the following link
https://www.compassinc.org.au/index.php/compass-assistance-dogs/dollar-day-program/ and for as little as $1 a day make a
huge difference for someone else’s
child. Please… just do it.
Finally over the next few months Helen,
Jess and I plan to catch up with each
and every one of you personally to
enjoy a cuppa and talk about how
things are going for you. We’ll be able
to answer any questions you may have
been holding onto and listen to
whatever thoughts you have that will
help us improve the way we support
your family. Many of you I haven’t had
the chance to just chat with in ages and
others I’ve yet to have the chance to
just meet and talk. I’m looking forward
to it. Best wishes,

Hi Everyone and welcome to this months edition of the Compass Newsletter.
What a fantastic month for Compass with plenty of activities and events going on. If you
haven’t “Liked” our Facebook page, please head over for more stories and photos from
around the service.
I just want everyone to stop and have a think for a second. How many of you have a cup of coffee everyday? I know this may be a little difficult for some of you to do, but what if you forego one of those coffees for the week and donate the
money to a good cause.
As many of you know, Compass has commenced our Assistance Dogs program, to train special dogs for young kids living with Autism. Starting September 1 we are launching a new initiative to raise some much needed funds for the program and we are hoping to fund up to 5 dogs for the coming year from the proceeds.
Simply head over to the Compass website, www.compassinc.org.au and click on “donate to the $1 a day program.” From there you can follow the prompts and you’re in… It’s that simple. From as little as a dollar a day you could change the lives of kids right here on the Coast living with Autism.
If you would like to meet some of the beautiful dogs in training as well as our wonderful trainers, head down to the Sunshine Plaza during the month of September and visit the community site. Compass has booked out the majority of the month to have the dogs on display. We look forward to seeing you there. Remember to sign up, it’s less than a cup of coffee a week.
Just a reminder about our
Compass Farm Open Day coming
up on Thursday September 14.
The staff and trainees are very
excited to showcase their work
and show you again. There will
be plenty of activities with sheep
sheering, treasure map and a
sausage sizzle. Please remember
to drive at 40kph on the dirt
road. See you there!!!
What a wonderful day it was at the
7th Annual Compass Charity Golf Day
proudly sponsored by Cricks Sunshine
Coast. The weather was superb and
company was even better. 115 golfers
teed off, all competing for one of the
biggest prize pools on the Coast
whilst raising funds for a great cause.
Although the $75000 Alfa Romeo
wasn’t even close to being scared,
there were plenty of eventful activities happening out on the
course. I also heard a story of one player handicapping
themselves further by teeing off with no clothes on… Why???
All jokes aside, there was a serious side to the day with all the
proceeds going directly to the Assistance Dogs program. With
the amazing generosity of everyone that attended,
collectively we were able to raise a little over $31,000. To put
that into perspective, that will fully pay for one dog to be
trained and handed over to a family. To everyone involved in
the day, including our sponsors Cricks Sunshine Coast, staff,
volunteers and players, a huge thank you.
Compass attended two expos
during the month to
continue the branding and
exposure leading into the
transition periods for exiting
students. The Currimundi
Special School post schools expo was well attended by
families along with over 23 service providers. Compass was
one of the more popular sites with families even cueing up to
speak with the staff of hand. The Disability Expo was held at
the TAFE East Coast campus. This expo sees attendees from as
far as Brisbane and Bundaberg attend to speak with service
providers around placements and opportunities for the
future. Again Compass was a very popular site and 2018 is
shaping up to be a very busy year.
By the time you
are all reading
this, we will be
officially in Spring;
with only 16
weeks to go until
Christmas! Where
exactly has the year gone?
My usual practice is to take my annual
leave in September for three weeks,
and yes, I will be returning to the same
tropical island located somewhere in
the Pacific Ocean, swimming with the
whales, snorkelling and generally
relaxing. This allows me to return
refreshed and energised in preparation
for the rest of the year.
Jess Northcott will be acting in my role
as Service Manager, so if you have any
queries, please do not hesitate to
contact her on (07) 5445 9116.
I have been extremely busy recently
meeting with new families who have
heard all about Compass and are
looking to continue their adult
children’s learning and development. It
is an exciting time for them as they look
forward to the next stage of their lives
after school.
As part of the preparation for this, we
have now scheduled our Open Days.
These provide the opportunity for
potential trainees, their families,
Helen’s
Happenings
Helen
interested community members, existing
trainees and their families, people looking to
work for Compass and invited guests to visit
each of our Centres or Enterprises and enjoy
an introduction to the extensive range of
innovative programs and curriculum we are
currently providing.
The Open Days are scheduled for:
Compass Farm: Thursday 14th
September 2017. 10:00am to 1:00pm

October 2017. 10:00am to 1:00pm
Compass Palmwoods: Thursday 19th
October 2017. 10:00am to 1:00pm
Just a reminder our end of term is Friday 15th
September, with all trainees starting back at
their respective centres on Monday 25th
September. Please also note, Monday 2nd
October is the Queen’s Birthday holiday and
all centres will be closed.
I will look forward to catching up with you on
my return and hopefully seeing you at the
Open Days.
From somewhere warm, beautiful and with
no phones….
Warm regards
Helen

Introducing Tara who you will see working hard in our Centres and on the Farm. Tara and her husband love living on a couple of acres with their three
children (19, 16 and 13 years old) along with their dogs and chickens. Outside of Compass, Tara does charity work and fundraising for disadvantaged children. This involves local bread runs to children's shelters, selling raffle tickets, cooking sausage sizzles and attending a range of various events. Tara's background is in Early Education and she has a soft spot for helping and supporting children. For the past 10 years Tara has been a member of New World Rhythm Choir. Tara performs Acapella at festivals, charity events and functions several times a year and is planning a European trip next year, which is exciting! Every Tuesday Tara takes her 93 year old Nan out dancing. They have great time and both look forward to their Tuesday catch ups with family and friends. Tara loves music, keeping active, pottering in the garden, bushwalking and catching up with friends. Tara is very passionately and follows the local/state and national Netball. Tara's favourite things to do on the weekends are taking her children to their sporting games, motorbike riding and sitting around the campfire with her family.

Team Compass I recently had the pleasure of participating in the Sunshine Coast Marathon with the Com-pass Team. The weather was perfect and the atmosphere motivating. It was great to see so much enthusiasm and spirit from everyone involved. I felt empowered when I saw team mates encouraging each other to cross the finish line whether it be the 2km, 5km or 10km. Thanks to all the trainees, families and staff that came down to support such a meaningful event. Jess
Fluro Friday
Recently Jazzercise Nambour and Cooroy held a fundraiser “Fluro Friday”. Leanne Paix, the owner of the studios, arranged the event to raise funds for Compass.
Three trainees attended the event and had a wonderful time and an important side part was the wonderful inclusion they felt, having fun with all the lovely ladies that participated. The night raised around $600 which Leanne then topped up to make a $1,000 donation to Compass which is greatly appreciated.

Compass Caboolture
Caboolture Trainees are enjoying a
warmer than normal winter and look
forward to spring. Our Monday bowling
group are increasing their social skills and
showing great improvements in displaying
appropriate behaviours in the community.
This group has shown so much growth
and this has enabled particular trainees to
tackle other community spaces with the
strong foundations and self-regulation
tools.
Our dog biscuits are proving popular with several sales
to visitors to the dog park. They are also for sale at the
Wabi Sabi shop in Palmwoods. Our Tuesday Wabi Sabi
group are enjoying the retail space and with a visit to the
mobile library on the way are utilising quiet times in the
shop to work on their literacy and numeracy skills as well
as
improving their Independent Living Skills through
cleaning and gardening activities required to keep our
shop spic and span.
Our Wednesday, independent shoppers are doing just
that! From banking, recipe selection, shopping lists and
purchasing. This group is making wonderful lunch time
dishes that can easily be replicated at home. Some won-
derful skills and kitchen confidence are being achieved
in these sessions. We have had families reporting back
that have had nights off from preparing the family meal.
Great work guys!
