CAFOD (St Helen’s) pray-fast-give

In recent times the commitment of our government to

providing Foreign Aid has been questioned. Some voices

suggest that the money should be better spent at home; on

the NHS for instance.

A recent report has highlighted the much greater

effectiveness of aid provided through charities, such as

CAFOD, which work directly with people at the forefront of

development aid in each country, by-passing the risk of

corruption with governments. Government aid used to

match-fund Lenten appeals, for example, has a much

greater effect than direct grants to the countries concerned.

Whatever your personal views on foreign aid, this pre-

election period gives us the opportunity to ask those

seeking our vote for a commitment to channel more of the

foreign aid budget effectively in this way.

Last week’s donations totalled £288. Thank you again.
