2019 Business Persons of the Year, Hillary and Garrett Stonefrom Re/Max Cornerstone and Motto Mortgage

How to Juggle it AllBy Hillary Stone

It can be a challenge for us all - juggling our personal lives, businessand finding some time for ourselves.

I just recently began taking sometime for myself by finding time to gofor a walk either outside or on the treadmill. I have found it puts me in abetter place mentally and physically. It helps reduce stress so I’m nicer inthe other aspects of my life. It’s often after the kids go to bed or when Ihave someone to watch them- so it’s not easy to find the time.

I will admit my personal life has taken the most sacrifice since becominga business owner. There are family events and other functions I just haven’tbeen able to attend because of work. I know that these first few years of abusiness are most important and if I invest my time now I will have moretime once my business is established. But that is ok with me.

I’ve found the secret to juggling it all is you need a strong support systemand you have to be honest with yourself. You can’t do everything and youhave to let yourself be ok with! Do what you can and don’t beat yourselfup. If you want to take some time off then do so, if you want to work nostop then do so- But do it because YOU want to!

An emergency is still an emergency, even when it comes to mental health. If you or a loved one are experiencing thoughts orfeelings of suicide, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room right away if you can travel safely. According to the Centersfor Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), emergency departments have seen a 25.5% increase in the past two years in patientswho’ve had suicidal thoughts, harmed themselves or both. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of adults who are strugglingwith mental health and even substance abuse has risen. According to the CDC, anxiety and depression symptoms have increased by31% and trauma or stressor-related disorder symptoms have increased by 26%. That is why it is important, now more than ever, tocheck on your loved ones even if they seem okay, take care of your own mental health and learn the warning signs of suicide ideationbefore it becomes active.

Early symptoms of suicide ideation may include isolation from others, feelings of hopelessness, frequently talking about death orsuicide, giving away personal belongings or saying goodbye, engaging in risky behavior and acquiring means to commit suicide, such as weapons or medication. When these behaviors and thoughts become plans and execution, the ideation becomes active andrequires immediate emergency attention. At Garden City Hospital, when a patient arrives to the Emergency Room with suicidalideation, the team will properly identify, assess and measure the risk of self-harm, implement safety precautions and interventionsbased on risk and provide the appropriate preventative information and resources to the patient and/or family before they leave thehospital.

In 2018, Wayne County alone saw 225 suicides in one year, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services(MDHHS). As the demand for mental health services increases, it seems the number of inpatient mental health facilities has plateauedor declined. Garden City Hospital is pleased to be addressing this crucial need with the opening of a 27-bed inpatient behavioralhealth for adult and geriatric psychiatric care. The new in-house unit, scheduled to open later this year, will help better serve themental health needs of the community, provide continuous care and return home safely and begin their journey to recovery. To learnmore about services at Garden City Hospital, visit www.gch.org.

Q. What are the signs that someone may be severely depressed and contemplating suicide? A. A person may experience persistent depressed mood, increased or decreased sleep andappetite, decreased energy, loss of interest and enjoyment in usually pleasurable activities. When these symptoms occur with thoughts of suicide or self-harm and an intent or plan toact, then professional assessment by a psychiatrist or other trained mental health profes-sional is advisable.

Q. Is the COVID-19 pandemic increasing severe depression and suicide. If so, why? A. We have anecdotal reports of each, which is probably not surprising because of the serious social and economicstressors occurring around the country. People who feel isolated may have worsening symptoms of a pre-existing psychiatric condition, or these associated problems can sometimes induce psychiatric symptoms in vulnerable people, such as the young or elderly. We also have reports of people consuming more alcohol or using other substances to self-medicate feelings of depression and anxiety.

Q. What are some things people can do at home, on their own, to help with depression? A. People should consume a healthy diet and maintain physical activity to relieve stress and avoid a decline in theiroverall health. Keeping busy with hobbies and maintaining social connections in a safe manner with others will alsohelp reduce stress and tension. Also, avoiding excess alcohol and abuse of other substances will help avoid developingdependence and related co-morbidities.

Q.  When should someone seek professional help for depression? A. If symptoms become persistent, longer than two weeks, and severe, in which they significantly interfere with dailyactivity and function, or include suicidal thinking with an intent or plan to act, then professional evaluation by a psychiatrist or other qualified professional is needed.

Q. What services does St. Mary Mercy Livonia offer local residents of Livonia, Westland and surrounding communities? A. Our hospital offers a full array of behavioral health services, including outpatient evaluation and counseling, inpatient hospital treatment, and psychiatric emergency services. In addition, intensive outpatient treatment is available for individuals with substance use disorders.

Q.  If someone needs medical help for their depression, where do they go? Who do they call?A. If you are depressed or suicidal, or have a someone in your life that is, here are some local resources availablethrough St. Mary Mercy Livonia.

Business Owners - Your Online Presence isMore Important Than Ever!By guest columnist Terry Packer, President of Reaction Direct Media Services

Here are 10 questions to ask yourself to ensure you are maximizing your online visibility.

1.  Google Business Listing – Have you claimed and verified your business with Google?2.  Google Business Listing– Is all the information listed correctly on your business listing? We recommend

“googling” your business at least once a week to ensure everything is correct.3.  Google Business Listing– Do you have current pictures of both the inside and outside of your business? Pictures of

your products and services? Make sure they are quality images.4.  Google reviews – Do you reply/respond to all your reviews? Do you ask for reviews and have a strategy to make it

easy and top of mind for your customers?5.  Website – Does Google deem your website secure and do you have a SSL? (If in the address bar of your website it

says “Not Secure”, you have a problem.)6.  Is your website mobile friendly and does it load quickly?7.  Activity – Do you post on all your official platforms at least every week including on your Google business listing?8.  Do you have a YouTube channel and post regularly on that platform? (FYI: YouTube is the 2nd most used search

engine behind Google!) Make sure you are tagging your videos with proper keywords.9.  Are you Incorporating more video into your marketing campaigns? Keep your videos short!10. Are you using testimonials as part of your marketing strategy? Research suggests testimonials drive upwards of

50% more traffic to your website than typical “promotional” messaging.
