It is not all that long agosince Catholics returnedfrom receiving Holy Com-munion and we would kneeldown, place our faces in our

hands to put aside distrac-tions and make ourThanksgiving to God forgiving us Christ in theBlessed Sacrament.

even greater impor-tance. Saint JohnChrysostom saysthat when a personhas eaten some de-licious food at abanquet, one is careful notto take anything bitter in hismouth immediately after, lest one should lose the

sweet flavor of those savory delicacies. In like manner, when we have received the preciousBody of Jesus Christ, we should take care not to lose its heavenly flavor by turning too soonto the cares and business of the world.

Saint Francis de Sales expresses the same idea. "When the merchants of India," he says,"have brought home their precious porcelain, they are very careful in conveying it to theirstorehouses lest they should stumble and break their costly wares. In like manner should theChristian, when one carries the priceless treasure of Our Lord's Body, walk with great care

and circumspection in order not to lose the costly gift committed to ones keeping?" Themeaning of both Saints is that after Communion we should spend some time in devout recollec-tion and prayer. This is the general practice of good Catholics. And indeed, reason itself tells usthat a good thanksgiving after Communion is of even more importance than a good preparationbefore it. If we are required to pause and consider what we are about to do when we approachOur Lord, what should be our devotion when He is actually in our hearts?

When the Blessed Virgin Mary visited Saint Elizabeth, the aged Saint was astonished at thereverent humility of the Mother of God, and said: "How does this happen to me, that themother of my Lord should come to me?" Now, in Holy Communion, it is the Lord Himself thatcomes to us, the Eternal "Wisdom which proceeded from the mouth of the Most High," the"Lord and Prince of the House of Israel, Who appeared to Moses in the burning bush," the"King of nations," "Emmanuel," "our King and Law-giver." To remain indifferent after havingreceived the Blessed Eucharist is to show either a total want of faith or a levity and stupidityunworthy of a reasonable being.

The Mass is something we celebrate together as Church and as a worshipping assemblyunited to Christ through the priest. It is not just something we do as individual Christians. The most precious moments of our day, our week, our lifetime are those immediately afterHoly Communion. For a brief quarter of an hour or less our hearts are small sectors of heaven.Jesus Christ, Son of God and Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, Savior, Master, King ofKings, is there within us, we become womb, tabernacle to hold Him sacred within us. He iswith us in His sacred humanity that reached out and touched the multitudes of earth and that

today is the joy of the all in heaven. He is present in His divinity that is the essential object ofheaven's Beatific Vision.

Our Thanksgiving after Holy Communion, or our failure to give time to that thanksgiving, hasa somewhat startling way of weakening this wonderful mystery of faith. A hurried departure, from this most precious fifteen minutes of our lives could seem to indicate a shallowness or lackof faith, perhaps a part of a weak human nature. Mass is intimately united to Christian life andmission. The final blessing and dismissal sends us forth to transmit what we have received toour brothers and sisters. If we leave directly after Communion, then we lose this importantcomponent of our spiritual life. Please stay until Mass has ended.

Saint Alphonsus relates that a priest, seeing a man leave the church immediately after Com-munion, sent the servers of Mass with lighted candles to accompany him home. "What is the mat-ter?" asked the man. "Oh," said the boys, "we have come to accompany Our Lord, Who is stillpresent in your heart." Perhaps Saint Alphonsus should reappear to us today and inspire us by thesame devout challenge!

A missionary priest one time asked a congregation: Who was the person who left the LastSupper early? Do you know who that is? Do we wish to celebrate Mass and Christs life-deathas he did? Or do we wish to join the other eleven in going forth to thankfully celebrate Christ inthe Eucharist, Christ in our lives.

The time of Giving Thanks after receiving Holy Communion is such a sacred time with Christ.

Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When the RomanEmpire turned a favorable eye toward the once-persecuted

Christians, among the effects was a population explosion in the

baptismal font, as Christian sympathizers stepped from theshadows. With more and more people becoming Christians,

laws were passed to protect Sunday as a work-free day. Soon, it

became possible to celebrate Mass later in the morning, ratherthan the older custom of gathering before dawn to celebrate

Eucharist. Amazingly, despite the increasing numbers of Chris-

tians, there was great resistance to adding to the number of

worship events; the Eucharist that began as a few friends

around a table soon was transformed into a more formal eventwith throngs crowding a large hall. All the Christians in a city

or town would gather around the bishop for the one Sunday

Eucharist, and only when the crowds became unmanageablewas there an impulse to divide the assembly by splitting off a

new bishop and flock. Now, sixteen hundred years later, many

parishes see a need to trim or combine Mass schedules. This is

often seen as tough surgery. Yet our forebears in the faith

would see it as a gain: a filling up of the Eucharist with a large

and vigorous assembly, a fullness of ministry, an opportunity tomake the Church more fully visible and stronger for service.

"40 days for life is a beautiful opportunity to join others

in prayer, fasting, keeping vigil, and reaching out to the

community. Through God, lives are changed during 40

days for life; people at various peaceful prayer locations

have helped women embrace life for their children,

watched as abortion clinic workers have quit their jobs,

and seen some clinics close completely. We often forget

the incredible power of prayer and loving witness, but 40

DAYS FOR LIFE reminds us of the fruits of dialogue

with the Lord and others. 40 days for life is a wonderfulopportunity to make a difference for life!" -- From Alex-
