HONG KONG - For the first time

in nearly a quarter century, Team

    USA claimed the five-player team

    Kulick (244), O'Keefe (226) and

    Dorin-Ballard (205). Stefanie

Nation did not compete in the

championship match, but was a part of the semifinal win for the

Americans, who last won the team

event in 1987 and took the silver

    medal in 2005, 2007 and 2009.

    The Singaporeans were led by

ning the doubles and trios but this

is the one we came for and we did

    it."

    championship match as Singapore

got off to a hot start, but the

    Americans slowly chipped away

at the lead. The match turned in

the seventh frame when the UnitedStates began a string of 15 consec-

    utive strikes as a team.

    "All week we have struggled

with our carry, so we just decided

to be patient and thankfully the pin

carry turned in our favor," Dorin-

    that changed the whole momen-

tum of the match. It was huge."

    Idle bowling thoughts.

    ...Worrying about your last

    game, and thinking about

    your next game doesn't

improve the next game. It only

    destroys the game you are

    bowling.

    .. .Young bowlers can't be

reminded too often that a 200

game is fine, but an A in any

    subject is better. A tourna-

ment win is terrific, but the

honor roll is more terrific. A

300 is great, but a diploma is

    the greatest.

    . . .A gruesome suggested

origin of a form of bowling

    came about when a tyrant

    leader amused himself by

rolling the heads of his ene-

mies a long a f lat piece of

land toward some humanbones stuck in the earth.

    Don't scoff, or dismiss the

    theory too quickly . Even

today, the pin up front is

    called the "head" pin, isn't

    it ?

    ...Some 50 bowlers have won

more than a million dollars in

    prize money---in their careers.

About the same number of pro

    golfers have won a million

    dollars---since the start of the

    year. Doesn't seem f air.

    ...In many bowling halls of

    fame there are minimum age

    requirements. And in most

    sports athletes are eligible for

    hall recognition five or so

    years after they retire. That

    doesn't work in bowling. Few

    competitive bowlers ever

admit to fully retiring. And on

    the opposite side, many super

star bowlers build up hall cre-

    dentials in their 20s.

..It is a sad fact that you can

finish lower than 100th on the

    golf money winning list and

    earn more than bowling's

    leading earner. But take

heart, there was a time when

it was only a dream that any

bowler could make a living in

    the sport.

    You can help. Whenever golf

    events, and other sports too,

are sponsored by productsused by bowlers, and that's

    any product, send them a

    polite communication and ask

    why they don't back bowling

    as well.

    ...The bowlers on the team

    were a bit surprised when

    their newest member, after

    tripping over a wayward cigar

    butt on the approach, fouled,

lost the game, then said, "Oh,

    the perversity of inanimate

    objects."

    What would you have said?

    After encouraging you to enroll

in our areas youth bowling pro-

grams, it is only fitting that a for-

    mer junior bowler and scholarship

winner has posted her first perfect

    game.

    Samantha Pearson not only post-

ed her first 300, but also her high-

est sanctioned series to date. This

was at Oakwood Lanes in the

    Wednesday Night Owls league.She posted 300-177-243 for a 720,

besting her previous high game of

264 and series of 716. All this on a

    solid 185 average.

    Samantha credits her mother,

    Mary, and Oakwood coach Greg

    Rottengen with honing her skills.

She admits to being nervous on

the twelfth ball in that first game

and she threw it in the same spot

and hoped I would get it out on the

    lane and not behind me.

    Samantha, 20, resides in Oxford

and is a student at Warren County

    Community College, studying ele-

    mentary and secondary education.

In 2007 she was awarded the MCUSBC WBA Emma P.

    Hendrickson Scholarship, which

    considers more than just bowling

    participation. She joined adult

leagues, and last year her team

    won the Night Owls.

Here is a reminder about youth

    programs: Check with your local

    bowling center about its youth

    program. The beauty of youth

    bowling in addition to building

    character and sportsmanship is

that it is not limited to the biggest

(physically) or even the best. Its

    for everybody. Some centers have

    youth programs for children with

special needs. There are bumper bowling leagues for the very

    young. And participants in the

sanctioned leagues get to build up

    their scholarship dollars for their

    higher education. Bowl.com

    details just about everything you

need to know about the countrys

    youth bowling programs.

This time of year most fall-win-

ter leagues have started. But you

didnt miss out. Some leagues still

need people to round out teams or

to generate a list of substitutes.

Call, enjoy, bowl, and make new

    friends!
