Norbord recently asked the NAHB Research Center to compare the air leakage between horizontally installed

panels and vertically installed TallWall. With up to a 60% reduction in air infiltration, there was no comparison –

TallWall won hands down. TallWall stretches from floor framing to top plate, making mid-wall horizontal joints a

thing of the past. Plug the holes in your building strategy. Build vertically, with TallWall.

A Part of the Team

With the 21st Century Building Expo coming up in just a few weeks, I want to recognize the important contribution the associate members make to the

North Carolina Home Builders Association. The associate members make a huge contribution to our organization. We have plumbers, sales people, appraisers, electricians, bankers, masons, attorneys, cabinet makers, and other trades all too numerous to mention. Associate members represent a broad spectrum of businesses that make an essential contribution to home construction.

Associate members also compose the work force for many of the committees that our association depends upon each year. Many associates serve capably on their local HBA’s Board of Directors. We have a larger number of associates in leadership positions for NCHBA, such as Barry Tutor, who serves as chairman of the Associate Committee as well as Secretary/Treasurer. Richard White serves as Chairman of the Communications Committee; Charlene Allen as Chairperson of Membership; Lennie Breedlove as Chairman of the Construction Careers Committee; Mary Ann Brafford is the Chairperson of Professional Women in Building, along with Mike Gerber and Rick Shields, who serve on the Executive Committee. In addition, at the NAHB level, we have Tammie Smoot serving as Chairperson of the Professional Women in Building Council.

Associates are the people we builders call on at the last minute to help solve a problem in order to obtain a critical inspection or smooth out that ever so important customer move-in. Associate members are part of the builder team upon which each builder depends for the success of his or her company.

I salute all of our associates this month for the great job they do for our industry and our association. I especially thank the associates who are exhibiting in the 21st Century Building Expo & Conference. The exhibitors allow us a one-stop opportunity in Charlotte to see new product offerings, up-to-date technical information concerning correct installation practices, as well as troubleshooting advice.

Something for EveryoneThe Expo is presented by the largest home builders association in the

country, our own NCHBA. Builders and associates will all find something to take away from this first class Expo. By attending the 21CBEC, you are guaranteed the opportunity to become more successful in your business. The educational programs are chosen so that there are seminars for everyone in the office, from your superintendent to your secretary. Close the office and bring everyone to Charlotte! What you will learn in the courses or on the Expo Floor will more than pay for your trip.

I look forward to seeing all of my fellow builders and associate members in Charlotte, September 15-17 at the 21st Century Building Expo & Conference.

6 NoRTH CARoLiNA BuiLDER September/October 2010

We continue to endure tough times in our industry. NCHBA’s top priority has been, and continues to be, to help our members survive. We’ve made some progress, but there is a lot more that needs

to be done. Unlike some other parts of the country, we are still building houses in North Carolina albeit at a much slower rate than when the economy was better.

This crisis has already claimed many of our members and will most certainly claim others before it ends. However, there will be those who will find a way to succeed. One of the key factors that will distinguish those who survive from those who fail will be knowledge. Those builders and associates who acquire this critical knowledge about the current marketplace and how best to position themselves will significantly increase their prospects for success.

One of the best opportunities to acquire this critical knowledge is to attend the eighth edition of the 21st Century Building Expo & Conference to be held September 15-17, 2010, at the Charlotte Convention Center. More than 50 top-notch courses will be presented on a variety of topics. These cutting-edge NCBI, NAHB, and general session courses will be taught by experts who will provide information that will be useful in helping you survive. Many of these instructors have presented these same courses at the International Builders Show and at other events across the country.

Because you continue to ask for it, green building will receive even greater attention at this year’s conference. By successfully completing the two-day NAHB green building course and third-day business management course, registrants will be able to achieve their NAHB green building certification. In addition, there will be several NCBI

and general session green building courses offered (e.g. Building Energy Codes: An Introduction; The Ins & Outs of Energy Efficiency Programs for New Construction in NC; Cost Effective Wall Systems; etc.).

Other courses respond directly to our challenging economy: Survival of the Fittest; How to Raise Credit Scores; Surviving and Thriving in Today’s Economy; Meet the Buyers; Charting Your Path to Success; Sales Solutions for Builders on the Comeback, among many others.

Courses are not the only way to acquire survival knowledge. Spend some quality time on the Expo floor. Our exhibitors will be displaying the latest in goods and services to serve the residential construction industry. Pick up new ideas and new technologies to better run your business. Examine new products and services that may help you deliver higher value to your customers and set you apart from your competition.

Another distinct advantage of attending the 21CBEC is you can acquire this critical knowledge without having to travel to a remote location and spend thousands of dollars in the process. The Charlotte Convention Center is an easy drive from where you are located. For a small investment of your time and resources, you have the opportunity to obtain a significant return.

History demonstrates that the residential construction industry is cyclical. My experience tells me that those builders and other industry professionals who survive the bad times and who prosper in the good times are those who take advantage of opportunities. The 21CBEC is one of those opportunities. I hope that you will take advantage of this member service that will help you survive these difficult times.

22 NoRTH CARoLiNA BuiLDER September/October 2010

The home building industry is made up a large network of professionals—builders and associate members alike. Working together as a unified group, we provide homes for millions of Americans.

It’s an important job, and I know we are all proud to be a part of the industry. I came across a quote from Theodore Roosevelt that I think reminds us of a good lesson: “Every man owes a part of his time to the business or industry in which he is engaged. No man has a moral right to withhold his support from an organization that is striving to improve within his sphere.”

I encourage you to take a day or two out of your schedule to become more engaged in our industry. Join me at the 21st Century Building Expo & Conference in Charlotte, September 15-17. I promise you will come away from the 21CBEC with something valuable … perhaps you will make a new business contact, increase your knowledge or acquire a new passion for your work.

On the Expo Floor, you will get the chance to LOOK at many products and services that builders use in their business. By keeping up with the latest products and technologies, it will offer you an updated perspective of the building world.

If you plan to exhibit in the 21CBEC, you can create long lasting relationships with building industry professionals by showcasing your products and services to attendees from across a five-state region. Exhibiting gives associates the unique advantage of meeting face-to-face with many potential prospects. The exposure to potential clients and contacts you will make cannot be surpassed.

The seminars and courses that are a part of the educational conference cover topics of interest to associates members, such as sales and marketing, customer service and technology, just to name a few. This is your opportunity to LEARN from nationally recognized expert speakers on the hottest topics in home building.

For example, Paul Montelongo, a consultant who works with businesses to make them more profitable, will present Sales Solutions for Builders on the Comeback, a lively presentation that will teach sales

professionals how to rebuild consumer confidence and guide buyers to a positive buying decision. Beverly Koehn will discuss how to build sales results with proven closing strategies in Essential Closing Strategies. Social media expert Carol Flammer will help you learn how to use social media to sell homes and promote your business in Social Media for Home Builders.

These are just a few of the great courses and seminars available to associates to gain valuable knowledge on practices that will put you far ahead of your competition. I invite you to review the conference schedule carefully and select a few courses and seminars that are of interest to you.

Don’t forget, the North Carolina Builder Institute offers two designations strictly for associate members—the Accredited Associate (AA) and Accredited Master Associate (AMA). I urge you to take part in this accreditation program that will set you apart from your industry peers.

Continuing education is not the only opportunity for you at the 21CBEC. The 21CBEC is the Southeast’s premier networking event for home building professionals. Choose your setting for networking at one of our many special events. You’ll have the chance to LISTEN to builders and hopefully learn how your company can better serve them.

Challenge your coworkers and friends to a round of golf at The Tradition Golf Club during the annual Expo Golf Tournament. The eighth annual STARS Awards Gala is scheduled for Wednesday evening and will recognize outstanding contributions to the residential building industry. The Builder Blast on Thursday evening is your chance to network with other exhibitors and Expo attendees. Popular regional band “Sleeping Booty” will play fun dance music, and attendees can enjoy drinks and a delicious dessert bar. The party starts at 8 p.m. and is open to all Expo attendees.

Exchange ideas with current clients and build new relationships through these amazing networking opportunities at the 21st Century Building Expo & Conference.
