Ser, Estar, Haber
Uses of ser1. With a noun or pronoun that identifies the
subject– Juan es químico.– Nosotros somos fumadores.
Uses of ser2. With adjectives or nouns that identify the
nationality, religous and political affiliations, or occupation of the subject.– Somos científicos.– Los misioneros eran mormones.– Mi hermana es bióloga.• Note: when stating a profession, “un” is not used!
Uses of ser• With adjectives to express characteristics of
the subject such as size, color, and shape.– La selva amazónica es inmensa.– El petróleo es negro.– El mundo es redondo.
Uses of ser• With the preposition de to indicate origin or
possession, and to tell of what material something is made– Evelio es de Guatemala.– Las bolsas de plástico son de Luisa.– El tanque es de acero.
Uses of ser• To indicate where and when events take place– La conferencia fue en el auditorio.– Las entrevistas son a las ocho.
Uses of ser• To express dates, days of the week, months,
and seasons of the year– Era viernes, 12 de octubre de 2001.– Es verano y hace mucho calor.
Uses of ser• To express time– Son las cinco de la tarde.– Era la una de la mañana.
Uses of ser• with the preposition PARA to tell for whom or
for what something is intended– ¿Para quién es el tanque de oxígeno?– Es para el señor Ramírez.
Uses of ser• In impersonal expressions– Es importante hacer la investigación.– Es alarmente que en México haya tanta
contaminación.
Uses of ser• With a past participle to express the passive
voice. – Note: in the passive voice, the subject is adcted
upon by a person or persons introduced by POR and that the past participle agress in gender and number with the subject.
– Las playas fueron contaminadas por el pueblo.– El parque fue limpiado por los estudiantes.
Ahora escribe oraciones según las reglas de los usos de ser. Compartirás las oraciones con los compañeros de clase y ellos adivinarán cual regla usaste.
Uses of estar• To indicate the location of objects or persons– El agujero de la capa de ozono está sobre el Polo
Sur.– Los científicos están allí para estudiarlo.
Uses of estar• With progressive constructions– Note: ar verbs--- ando; er / ir verbs--- iendo– Note: stem changes occur as in the preterit verbs
(pidiendo, durmiendo)– Note: double vowel spelling changes apply
(construyendo)– Note: there are some irregulars (yendo)– La fábrica petroquímica estaba reciclando sus
desechos.– !Qué peste! La fábrica papelera está quemando algo.
Uses of estar• With adjectives to express a physical or
mental/emotional state or condition of the subject– El agua está fría para ser agosto.– El paciente estaba deprimido cuando lo aislaron.
Uses of estar• With a past participle to describe the resultant
condition of a previous action.– La playa está contaminada.– Los peces están muertos.
Uses of estar• To express change from the norm, whether
perceived or real– Estás muy flaca. ¿Comes bien?– El profesor está muy simpático hoy.
Adjectives with different meanings

Uses of haber• As the auxiliary verb in the perfect tense– Nunca he cortado un árbol.– Habían recogido la basura en su calle.
Uses of haber• In the special third-person singular form, hay
(había, habrá, etc.) to signal the existence of one or more nouns (there is/was/are/ were/will be, etc.)– Hay bosques pluviales en Ecuador.– Había aire puro en esa montaña.– Habrá aun más problemas ecológicos para
nuestros nietos.
Uses of haber• In the expression
hay (había/habrá) que infinitiveto convey “to be necessary to” or “one must”– Hay que conservar electricidad.En el futuro habrá que iniciar un programa de
reciclaje.
