IN MEMORIAM ALEXANDER RACHMANINOFF(8th March 1933 - 1st November 2012)

Alexander Rachmaninoff, the composer’s grandson, was laid to rest atthe Cimetière de Trivaux in Paris at noon on Thursday 8th Novem-ber 2012 after a Russian Orthodox funeral ceremony in the ParoisseOrthodoxe de Saint-Jean-le-Théologien. His death at the age of only 79had occurred exactly a week earlier and it had come as a profoundshock to those of us who had known him well. His athletic prowesswas a thing of legend; his energy capacity seemed limitless. He was askilled mountaineer, every year notching up yet another conquest ofa precipitous rock-face that left the more risk-averse among us open-mouthed in admiration. Such terrifying exploits would have taxed aman half Alexander’s age, but for him they were second nature.

Alexander was the son of Tatyana, Rachmaninoff’s younger daughterwho had married Boris Conus in May 1932. He was therefore bornwith the surname Conus, but he changed it officially in the early1990s, joking to me once that it was far easier to get a restauranttable as a Rachmaninoff than as a Conus. But there were more seriousreasons for adopting his grandfather’s surname, not least because itidentified him more strongly as a direct heir and gave him more im-mediately recognisable credentials as the figurehead of his cherishedproject and brainchild, the Serge Rachmaninoff Foundation.

The Foundation’s aim is to encourage performances of Rachmani-noff ’s music and to broaden its appreciation internationally. In cer-tain countries, such as Great Britain and the United States, theprogramming of Rachmaninoff’s works has long been healthy, par-ticularly after the boost that came with the centenary year of 1973and the performances and literature about him that ensued. Else-where, however, it has perhaps been less easy to establish Rachma-ninoff as a central figure of the repertoire or to persuade orchestras

Page 8: Serge Rachmaninoff FoundationRachmaninoff Estate into developing a more diffuse presence of Serge Rachmaninoff’s works worldwide: as a result, underperformed works have been successfully

and solo artists to explore areas other than the familiar concertosand the Second Symphony. But through a series of festivals in variouscultural centres the Foundation has found new, enthusiastic ears fora wide spectrum of Rachmaninoff’s output. In addition, a special re-lationship with the Chandos record label has generated discs of allthree symphonies as well as the operas Aleko, Francesca da Riminiand The Miserly Knight. With Alexander’s cooperation, the original(1926) version of the Fourth Piano Concerto was resurrected by ateam of scholars, and is now a valuable addition to the catalogue ofRachmaninoff’s works published by Boosey & Hawkes.

Alexander was a man of drive and passion. As guardian of the Rach-maninoff maninoff flame, he could be hyper-protective if he sensed athreat to his grandfather’s reputation. But anybody who had the plea-sure of staying with him at Villa Senar, or who encountered him inhis later years of contentment with his wife Natalya, will also havewitnessed the amusing, relaxed Alexander, the Alexander who enjo-yed laughter and who maintained to the last an intense pride in hisancestry. It is therefore fitting that he should have been buried nextto his beloved mother, Tatyana.

THE SERGE RACHMANINOFF FOUNDATIONA brief History

The Serge Rachmaninoff Foundation was established in 2000 by thecomposer’s grandson, Alexander Rachmaninoff at ‘Villa Senar’, thecomposer’s house on the shores of Lake Lucerne, Switzerland. From1993 Alexander Rachmaninoff was already actively promoting themusic of his grandfather through the “Friends of Serge Rachmani-noff” association. The Foundation’s primary aim has been from thevery beginning to foster an appreciation of the music of Serge Ra-chmaninoff and to bring the whole of his oeuvre, including many lit-tle known works, to public attention. International festivals and galaconcerts, research and documentary projects were supported withthe aim of promoting a new interest in the life and work of the com-poser. The Foundation has also supported intensively the youngergeneration of musicians: Denis Matsuev from 2004, Sean Botkin from2009, Dmitry Mayboroda from 2010, Daniil Kharitonov from 2012.Under Alexander Rachmaninoff ’s leadership the Foundation regu-larly promoted events in cooperation with the world’s major festi-vals, halls, pianists, conductors and orchestras in Europe and in theUnited States. Over the past 13 years Alexander Rachmaninoff inve-sted a considerable amount of the wealth deriving from the SergeRachmaninoff Estate into developing a more diffuse presence ofSerge Rachmaninoff’s works worldwide: as a result, underperformedworks have been successfully promoted before international au-diences including the Symphony nr. 1 op. 13, the Spring Cantata, thePiano Concerto No. 4 as well as the Piano Sonata nr. 1 op. 28, themusic for two pianos and the Trio Elégiaque op. 9.

Alexander Rachmaninoff died of a stroke on November 1, 2012 justhaving completed the programming of the Jubilee Year 2013, whichcelebrates the 70th anniversary of Serge Rachmaninoff’s death andthe 140th anniversary of his birth. The Foundation has promoted all-

Rachmaninoff concerts with leading music institutions such as theLondon Philharmonic Orchestra in UK, the Orchestre de Paris inFrance, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and Santa Cecilia Orchestra,Rome in Italy, the Moscow Philharmonic Society in Russia, the Lu-cerne Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romandein Switzerland, the Ravinia Festival in the US, the National SymphonyOrchestra of Ukraine in Kiev (Ukraine), the Orchestre National deBelgique in Brussels (Belgium), and the Wiener Konzerthaus in Au-stria. In 2013 alone, the amount of the pledges granted to the above-mentioned institutions totals over US$. 500.000. It was Alexander’sstrong belief that Serge Rachmaninoff’s music is here to stay and therecent incredible increase in the number of the performances of hisworks worldwide is proving he was right.

Since 2007, the pianist Denis Matsuev has been Ambassador and Ar-tistic advisor of the Serge Rachmaninoff Foundation and has greatlycontributed to the success of the promotion of the composer’s musi-cal message to audiences of the 21st century.

SENAR

Built in Hertenstein, on the shores of Lake Lucerne, during the years1931-33 by the famous Swiss architects Alfred Möri and Karl F. Krebs,Senar (an acronym from SErge and NAtalia Rachmaninoff) is one ofthe very rare examples of pure Bauhaus style still perfectly preserved.Its park, which consists of about 20 hectares of perfectly maintainedgrass and beautiful trees and plants, has direct access to the lake, in-cluding a rare “boat house”, which will easily become an ideal en-trance for visitors. Senar faces the Pilatus Mountain and inspiredSerge Rachmaninoff for two of his late masterworks, the Rhapsody ona Theme of Paganini op. 43 and the Symphony nr. 3 op. 44. The com-poser, with his family and friends, spent at Senar all his summersfrom 1932 to 1939, when he left Switzerland for the last time to re-turn to the US, just before the start of the WWII.

The historical archives of Senar contain more than 500 pictures ofSerge Rachmaninoff, his family members and his friends; 250 booksof Rachmaninoff’s private library, many of them dedicated by the au-thors to the composer; more than 300 original letters from Serge Ra-chmaninoff himself (more than 80), his wife Natalia (more than 120),his daughter Tatiana and a number of important friends, all of themunknown until now.

Senar has preserved its original interior design, with many pieces ofperiod furniture and other items associated with the day-to-day lifeof Serge Rachmaninoff and his family. Many of these pieces are rareexamples of 1930s interior design, such as, for example, the originalbathrooms.

The Studio where Serge Rachmaninoff composed will be restored andopen to visitors for the first time. Among other things, it houses hisoriginal Steinway grand piano. Given to Rachmaninoff by the owner

of the company, it arrived at Senar in April 1934 when the familymoved in. Senar will also host a CD collection of more than 2000 recordings,mainly comprising Russian music of the 19th and 20th centuries: aspecial room will be dedicated to the possibility of listening to musicunder ideal conditions.

Operating according to the model of The Red House, once residenceof Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears and today home of the Britten-Pears Foundation, Senar will be established as the International Cen-tre for Serge Rachmaninoff’s legacy, with the following programmeto the fore:

- developing and promoting a better knowledge of Russian culture, particularly through the organization of lectures, exhibitions and concerts to be held at Senar in collabora-tion with the most important Russian musical institu-tions and museums;

- making a large part of Senar accessible to the public (du-ring the tourist season, between April and September);

- opening its doors to piano students, composers and musi-cologists to spend a substantial amount of time at Senar (out of the tourist season, between October and March) in collaboration with other music foundations in Switzerland and in the world and with the Lucerne University of Music;

- hosting all kinds of musical events, including master clas-ses and concerts in connection with the Zaubersee Festival and with other activities of the Lucerne Symphony Orche-stra;

- hosting other special public events related to various aspects of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s life, including his love for flowers, cars and boats;

- hosting private events dedicated to a select audience of Pa-trons of the Serge Rachmaninoff Foundation.

When Alexander Rachmaninoff died – on November 1, 2012 – theprogramme of the so called “Jubilee Season” was ready: his idea wasto present Rachmaninoff’s works to the audiences of most of the Eu-ropean capitals and to reinforce the partnership with the institutions,which have been helping the Foundation to accomplish his mission.The London Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Paris, the Filarmonicadella Scala, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Ravinia Festivaland the Orchestre National de Belgique are therefore an importantpart of the season. But also new relationships, such as the LucerneSymphony Orchestra – finally a partner in Lucerne – and the WienerKonzerthaus are playing a pivotal role, as partners and venues thatAlexander has dreamed for a long time to add to the “roster” of theFoundation. He was looking forward enormously to this season,which has been dedicated to him as the last homage to his activity.Together with performances of the most celebrated works, someamazing discoveries: the Symphony nr. 1 has been heard for the firsttime at Teatro alla Scala (and possibly even in Milan itself) thanks tothe devotion of the conductor Gianandrea Noseda and the Isle of theDead made the first appearance in the repertoire of the Orchestre dela Suisse Romande. But the best news that Alexander would haveloved to hear, is that thanks to his encouragement one of the histori-cal German orchestras, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, will start a Ra-chmaninoff Cycle, which will include the performance (and therecording) of the Symphony nr. 1 under the baton of his Music Di-rector Riccardo Chailly. Another strong sign that the music of SergeRachmaninoff in his whole “is here to stay”.

As his grandfather Sergei, AlexanderRachmaninoff has been deeply bondedwith the Lucerne Lake and his land.Since the very beginning of the Founda-tion’s activity, his aim was to collabo-rate with the city of Lucerne and its hall,in particular after the opening of themagnificent KKL.

This is the opportunity to express ourthanks to the Lucerne Symphony Or-chestra and his Intendant - now ourBoard Member - for the wonderful col-laboration.

The poster of the “Zaubersee Festival2013” is the best visual homage to SergeRachmaninoff and his discrete influenceon the cultural life of the territory. Ale-xander would surely have loved it.
