Rector’s Letter

Dear Friends,

What does it mean to be a Christian?

Jesus said, ‘I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever abides in me, and I in them, they will bear much fruit. Apart from me you can do nothing.’

John 15.5

The vine is a great biblical theme to reflect on at harvest time. It reminds us that a Christian is a person in living union with Jesus Christ. This is Jesus’ description of a real Christian. He or she is someone who has been grafted onto the vine, Christ himself. It is someone who has that vital, personal union with the Lord Jesus Christ; someone who has deliberately chosen to be unified with him. I am sure I don’t need to remind you that a Christian is not someone who is ‘good living’, so-called. Or someone who is merely trying to do their best to muddle through life with a bit of religion, sending up the odd prayer and coming to church! No, a Christian is someone who has the life of Christ flowing through them. It is a person who is in touch with God. And not mechanically in touch with him. We are not computers plugged into network, operating from a server. That would be too mechanical, too robotic, a picture. No, a man or woman when they become a Christian is naturally, organically in touch with God. They really are! The sap of the vine begins to run into the branches. Jesus becomes part of a believer – by his Spirit. As much as our hearts are part of us, or our blood vessels, or our nerves or our muscles. We splice into him. We grow from his root and stem as part of his life: he in us and we in him. This is how Christians come to produce fruit (verse 5). Notice they don’t produce results, according to Jesus. Churches aren’t in the business of getting results - again, like a computer would be! It is tempting sometimes to think like that. But no, Jesus says Christians are to live fruitful lives for God, where I take it that fruit is a life of joy (John 15 verse 11) and love (verse 12). ‘That my joy may be in you,’ says Jesus, ‘and that your joy may be complete.’ And, ‘Love one another as I have loved you.’ This is the fruit of the vine, along with the ability to share your faith so as others can become Christians as well. Go, he says (in John 15 verse 16), like a missionary. Go and bear fruit. Go and share your faith! The vine and the branches are not like a Christmas tree because the fruit is not simply hung on Christians, the way you would hang decorations on a Christmas tree. Rather, the picture here is more of a real fruit tree (an apple tree or a pear tree) because the fruit naturally grows on the tree. The life of the tree pulses through to it and Christian people bear fruit. Perhaps you want new life and spiritual vitality. I hope you do! In yourself and in our church family at Knockbreda. It comes by abiding in Christ, abiding in the vine. There is no other way. You need that living relationship with him, as you come to trust in his death and resurrection; believing that he died for you and then rose again for you; and then cultivating that relationship, as you meditate on your Bible reading and as you pray to him. Rector’s Letter (continued)

If you do that, if you abide, the promise here is that fruit will come. Without Christ not a berry! There will be no fruit without being grafted onto Christ. Without Christ nothing, but with Christ something! Sometimes it is a bumper crop, a bumper harvest, in your own life and in the life of our church. Because God can use anyone, if they abide in Christ. Between us and him there is a living union. It is a loving union. It is a lasting union. This is what it means to be a true Christian.

Sincerely in Christ,

Bill

CHRISTMAS SHOEBOX APPEAL

Since 1990, more than 11.3 million boys and girls in over 130 countries have experienced God’s love through receiving a simple shoe box covered in Christmas wrapping paper and containing a range of small gifts. This has been organised by Operation Christmas Child, which is just one aspect of the work of Samaritan’s Purse.

Samaritan’s Purse is an international organisation aiming to put into practice the teaching Jesus gave in the well known parable of the Good Samaritan, which reminds us that everyone is our neighbour and we as Christians are to show love to them. One way to be a good Samaritan this Christmas is to donate a shoe box, with small gifts. These boxes may be the only gifts many children and young people will receive this Christmas.

Leaflets explaining what to do are available at the back of the church and in the Church Hall. Completed boxes should be returned by Sunday 1st November.

Thank you for your continued support

PRAYER CARDS These are in the church and hall, so that if you wish the prayer groups (Tues & Wed) to pray for specific people or situations they will be covered in prayer and are strictly confidential. NO NAMES NEED TO BE GIVEN We have prayed for many people we do not know but would also love to hear of the outcome of those requests especially in relation to illnesses etc. Philippians 4:6 - Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.

Tell God what you need and thank Him for all He has done.

LADIES PRAYER FELLOWSHIP The Ladies Prayer Fellowship meets regularly throughout the year on 2nd & 4th Wednesday mornings of each month at 10.30am. We would like to encourage all ladies who are free (even occasionally) to take this opportunity to focus on prayer within our own church family and the Newtownbreda community. Prayer is often considered difficult in a group session but we are assured by God’s word that where two or three are gathered together He is in the midst of us. Prayer takes many forms and all of them are used in our group. We have silent, prepared prayer, readings etc. Please feel free to come along & join the group particularly as we move into the week of Mission with Trevor Johnston. All ladies are welcome

Kel Richards’ WordWatch: Skin of our teeth

It’s a cliché that turns up in bad journalism and badly written TV and movie melodramas: “It was a very close shave, and they only escaped by the skin of their teeth”. The odd thing about this is that our teeth don’t have skin—so, what on earth does the expression mean? The answer in a moment. First I have to point out that this is yet another expression the Bible has contributed to the English language. The first appearance of the expression is in the English Bible produced by John Wycliffe’s team of translators in the 14th century, in their rendering of Job 19:20. And it’s still there, even in most modern translations, to this day: “… I have escaped by the skin of my teeth” (Job 19:20 ESV). The expression is there in Tyndale, in the King James Version, the Revised Standard Version, the New King James Version, the New International Version, the New Living Translation, and most others. As such it’s yet another small reminder of the way the Bible saturates the history of western civilization. David Crystal is the best-known (and probably the most highly regarded) linguist currently writing about the English language. His latest book is called Begat: The King James Bible and the English Language. Drawing heavily on Tyndale’s earlier translation, the KJV editors gave us the version that had the longest lasting unchallenged dominance of any translation of the Bible. And in so doing they helped shape the language we speak today. Crystal comes to the conclusion that the Bible has contributed 257 idioms to the English language—compared to a mere 100 or so from William Shakespeare (the second largest single source of English idioms). So every time someone talks about “the salt of the earth”, or “a man after our own heart”, or “going from strength to strength”, or “a rod of iron” or… well more than 200 other idioms, they are quoting the Bible, whether they know it or not. And now the answer to the puzzle. The skin of your teeth is (or are): your lips! Imagine being shaved with a sharp blade, one that shaves so close and is so razor sharp that it almost slices off your lips. A horrible thought, but that’s what it means to escape “by the skin of your teeth”

6.30pm Evening Praise

6.30pm on a Sunday evening sees the church gather in the Minor Hall for healthy Bible teaching, lively praise and warm fellowship. If you want to grow in faith and walk closer with the Lord in your life, please do come along. You will be made very welcome. The informal format allows the bible teaching to be a little longer. We have some special missionary guests this month – see the back page of this magazine. Various members of the church family lead us in prayer and praise. There is a regularly updated Christian bookstall to peruse while you enjoy a cup of tea after the meeting. We meet every Sunday evening in the hall except for the 2nd Sunday in the month when we are in the church. If you would like a lift, phone the Rector. Try it and see!

Our Winter Programme commences on Thursday evening 1 October at 8.00 pm in the Church Hall. The speaker will be Wendy Porter and her topic is 'Upcycling your Wardrobe'. I look forward to seeing you all. If you have not been to our meetings before why don't you come along and give it a 'try'. You will be made very welcome. Also, the MU are hosting a 'Barn dance' on Friday evening 2 October. This is to coincide with the Harvest. This should be a very enjoyable evening and I would encourage everyone to come along. The cost is £5.00 (under 16 free). If you have not got a ticket you will be able to pay at the door. EmilyHickey Branch Secretary
