Find Walking Difficult?

The Freedom Chaircould help!

A power chair with a difference

The Robert Loft StoryI’ve been an MS sufferer for many years and have pretty much lost all mobility on my left side. This has been severely restrictive. I already have a large power chair and I’ve been using this chair for both inside the house and for outdoor trips which has certainly made my life more bearable. However, because of its size and weight, loading this chair into our small SUV is time consuming and a little difficult for my wife Sharon. When the chair is in the SUV there’s only room for the two of us and this is also restrictive. The alternative was to take taxis but this was an expensive option.I then discovered the Freedom Chair. Paul from Montec Mobility Ltd sourced the chair, trained me how to use it and has supplied other helpful extras.I’m now FREE. Sharon and I can go out together with ease as it only takes a few seconds for her to load the Freedom Chair into the car. Parking is unrestricted as there is no need for a ramp. I can almost go anywhere. We can enjoy visits to family and friends without them having to come to us. I can also get picked up by friends and with very little support from them we can have an enjoyable day together. The Freedom Chair has given me my life back and the best thing I can say about it is: “Its Life Changing”

Services Age Concern Tauranga Annual ReportIt gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 31st Age Concern Annual General Meeting this morning. Those of you present at the AGM last year will recall that we celebrated 30th years of Age Concern in Tauranga and had a delicious cake to mark the occasion. The 2016/17 year has been a very busy year for us. During the year we handled 21,519 enquires in our office with over 18,000 people in the community attending our programs - from our monthly meetings to those of you participating in our Steady As You Go Falls Prevention exercise classes and much more. We rely on our volunteers and the hours given freely during the year enable us to deliver our services and keep Age Concern connected with you all. I sincerely thank all our volunteers for their time, their friendship and commitment to Age Concern. At last year’s AGM I informed you we were still considering purchasing our own property in Tauranga. I’m sure you are all aware of the rise in the value of property in the area and this has caused us to re-think our position. This coupled with the uncertainty of government funding has meant the Board decided to renew the lease on our existing premises, 177A Fraser Street, until November 2018. We are starting on a project to look for complementary and like minded organisations that would be interested in sharing premises with us. The Age Concern bus is getting on in years and we have launched a project for a new bus purchase. Keep an eye on our newsletters for the announcement of the new minibus. In April of this year Age Concern Tauranga tendered for the new Elder Abuse Response Service contract. The Bay of Plenty was included in the Midland Region which covered Waikato, Coromandel, Taupo and Rotorua. It would have extended our support from Waihi through to Whakatane. However, as in all tender processes not everyone is successful and unfortunately Tauranga’s contract was awarded to another service provider effective 1st July 2017. We are very disappointed not to have been selected to continue this valuable service, however, our resolve remains strong to deliver services and programs to older people.Next month our monthly seminar will be presenting our services and I would urge you to come along, meet other members and learn more about what we do in and around Tauranga.

We have a small team in our office - Tanya Smith, General Manager; Pat Duckmanton, Accredited Visiting Services Co-ordinator and Michelle McGee our Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Co-ordinator. Jo Pedersen joined us in March this year in an Administration Support role. Deb Grainger in conjunction with Tauranga City Council’s Staying Safe programme runs our Driver Refresher Courses. Angelika Gillen is our Steady As You Go Falls prevention co-ordinator. Angelika manages the peer leaders who run a total of 33 classes a week from Waihi Beach to Whakatane. We extended classes this year to Edgecumbe and Whakatane. We would like to acknowledge Helen O’Connor who has carried out the assessments for subsidised taxi vouchers for a number of years and has retired. Judi Steel has taken over from Helen carrying out this very important role in the community. I also want to acknowledge our Board Members who have given their time and expertise to contribute to the successful running of Age Concern Tauranga. Keith Ardern for his accounting skills, Evan Turbot for legal advice, Angela Scott for projects and managing the monthly meetings, and Eddie Jackson as Vice Chair and managing the new bus project. Adrienne von Tunzelman has had a busy year, not only on our Board but also covering the role of President at Age Concern New Zealand in Wellington. We co-opted Ciska Vogelzang during the year and we very much appreciate her valuable contribution to our team.Much of the work we do would not be possible without financial assistance. Our grants and funding through the year have been provided by:Accident Compensation Corporation, Legacy Trust, Lion Foundation, Capital Coast DHB, NZ Lottery Grants, Pub Charity, St John’s Trust, Ministry of Social Development, Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council - Travel Safe.In addition, we received sponsorship and donations from: NZ Transport Agency, D & L Investment - Z Gillies Cluster, Rotary Club of Tauranga, VTNZ and NZ Community Post. Finally thank you to all our members who provide the purpose for what we do.I look forward to continuing to work as a volunteer for Age Concern and contributing to the Board.

Fresh warnings after phone scam targets Spark customersPhone scammers have become an incessant problem for landline-owning New Zealanders, who can find themselves dealing with several scam calls a week.

The complaints are from people who have been targeted by scammers claiming to be from Spark, saying bills are owed and the internet will be cut off.

One Dunedin woman who received one of these calls said she told the caller she was not a Spark customer, and he responded with: “You are a bloody b*tch,” before hanging up on her.

But the scammers chose the wrong number to call when they got Julie Harlwich, who works in software. Ms Harlwich says she wasn’t offended by the name calling, instead having a good laugh at the rapid change in the caller’s persona.

When she warned of the scam on a local Facebook page, others chimed in saying they had received the same call.

The scammers appear to be calling random numbers and hedging their bets that some of the recipients will be signed up to the popular internet provider.

While Ms Harlwich was able to laugh off the Spark scammer, it was the second time they called that week, and she said she

Legacy TrustThe recent Legacy Trust funding round has benefited a large variety of local organisations. Those receiving financial assistance include, for example, Good Neighbour and Te Aranui Youth Trust, Red Cross, Acorn Foundation, Autism NZ, Tauranga Civic Choir, and a variety of sports clubs. The fact Legacy Trust is able to gift this money is not because the cost of Legacy Funerals is greater than other local options, but because Legacy is a registered charitable company, rather than a commercial funeral company. Profits do not go to individuals or companies, they are distributed back to the community.Since Legacy Trust was formed in 2007, nearly $2.5 million has been gifted back to the local community to benefit current and future Western Bay of Plenty citizens.

was getting annoyed at the number of calls she gets to her landline.

One piece of advice offered by community members frustrated by the number of scam calls is to blow a whistle down the phone line. Ms Harliwich says next time, she might just give that a try.

Spark says it’s tricky to prevent the attacks, which police describe as “fluid” and “constantly changing”. They receive “regular reports” of various scams in operation.

Police say if you have any doubt about a phone call or email, it is likely it is a scam. If you are threatened, simply hang up.

Spark say their best line of defence at the moment is to warn customers of the tactics used by scammers so they know what to expect.

Spokesperson Ellie Cross says there are a number of scams Spark is aware of:

• Fraudsters tell customers their Spark services will be cut off due to security issues unless they change their settings or clean up their computers. The customers are then directed to a website where they are asked to download some software, which the fraudsters have branded as Spark.• Customers are asked to give remote access to their computer and provide personal banking information.• Sometimes they are instructed to leave their phone off the hook for three days following the

“setting change” as part of this scam.• Fraudsters give customers a made-up “employee number” to verify their identity, and then gain access to people’s bank accounts by claiming customers have exceeded their data limit and need to hand over credit card details in order to pay.

Spark’s advice on avoiding being scammed• Spark will never ring customers out of the blue and ask them for any form of personal information, particularly bank details or passwords. It will only ask you for personal information if you call. If you receive a call from someone claiming to be

from Spark who asks you to enter on the computer your bank details, end the call.• It’s vitally important customers do not visit fraudulent webpages, or provide any personal banking information. If they have any doubts about a phone call’s legitimacy, they should end the call as quickly as possible.• Fraudsters actively monitor Spark’s activity and copy its methods of communication, so it can be difficult for customers to tell the different between genuine calls and fake ones.• Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of this scam and who has passed on bank account details or logged into online banking while on one of these calls, should contact their bank immediately.• Spark customers who wish to share details of scam calls, or who have any particular concerns, should email [email protected]

Modern, friendly and close to all the amenities, Taupo’s Wharerangi Village is attracting the attention of retirees seeking affordable retirement living with villa prices starting at $189,000.

Wharerangi Village recently underwent a major redevelopment which saw its one bedroom villas fully modernised and the spacious new Community Centre has become a hub for village get-togethers.

Smaller than most retirement villages, neighbours soon become friends in this close knit community.

The location was another big drawcard for resident Jim Shaw who still drives but prefers to walk to keep himself active and fit. “My friends say isn’t it fantastic that I’m so close to town. The RSA, my doctor, the shops – they’re all within walking distance, and there’s a big park at the lake end of the street. I felt comfortable here right from the start.”

Don’t miss out on one of the few remaining one bedroom villas in this affordable, centrally located Taupo retirement village.

Advance Care Planning asks “What matters to you?”

Advance Care Planning (or ACP) is the process of thinking about, talking about and planning for future health care and end of life care. Advance care planning gives everyone a chance to say what’s important to them. It helps people understand what the future might hold and say what treatment they would and would not want. It helps people, their families and their healthcare teams plan for future and end of life care. If you have had a chance to think about the care you want towards the end of your life, you may want to write your thoughts down. This makes it much easier for families and healthcare providers to know what you would want - particularly if you can no longer speak for yourself. ‘My Advance Care Plan’ forms are available on line at:www.advancecareplanning.org.nz or you can contact Age Concern Tauranga on (07) 578 2631 or your GP.

Cold houses and impact on health

We spend more than 90% of our time indoors, and for that reason, the indoor environment and its effect on our health are more important than is often assumed.

Many New Zealand homes share a number of features that can lead to health issues. One of the biggest problems is that our houses are simply too cold. This can lead to dampness, mould and respiratory illness. This is a particular issue with older homes, but not all new ones are exempt.

Recent research has shown that insulation and effective heating can make a significant difference.

How does the temperature of our houses compare with world standards? The World Health Organization recommends a minimum indoor temperature of 18°C, and ideally 21°C if babies or elderly people live in the house. The average daily indoor temperature in the winter for most New Zealand houses is just 16°C.

How do cold houses affect health? If house temperatures fall below 16°C, the risk of respiratory illness increases. This is because cold

houses are also usually damp, which can lead to respiratory symptoms.

House occupants produce a significant amount of moisture in their day-to-day activities, for example, cooking, showering and drying laundry. Even breathing has an effect - each person produces one litre of moisture per day this way. Moisture condenses on cold surfaces, such as uninsulated walls.

As well as dampness being a health risk in itself, it can lead to mould growth, which may also contribute to respiratory problems. Mould growth is worse when there is also poor ventilation, such as when a house has well-sealed aluminium windows that are kept shut, or doesn’t have an extractor fan in the bathroom.

Living in a cold environment is also physiologically stressful for people who are old, sick or very young.

How might mould contribute to illness?More than one third of our houses contain mould. Most mould is not harmful for healthy people. However, some species release substances which are potentially toxic and may cause adverse reactions in some people, such as those with pre-existing respiratory conditions. Mould also produces spores when it reproduces. When these are inhaled or come into contact with skin they may cause allergies and skin irritation, and aggravate asthma.

Sometimes we need a little more support than family or friends can offer. Whether it’s post-operative convalescence, palliative or general care at home, deciding what support is needed and where to find it can be challenging. The staff at New Zealand’s longest running private homecare provider, Miranda Smith Homecare, know how difficult these decisions can be.

Owner, Miranda Smith says: “People may be in crisis when they contact us, or they may require our services to assist with and plan their recovery from illness or injury. Whatever the reason, we believe choosing the right support is critical. Peace of mind comes with knowing the correct care is in place, in the familiar surroundings of home with family and friends nearby. This dramatically impacts recovery and helps to maintain independence”.

Miranda Smith Homecare offers a highly professional, caring and above all else, trustworthy service. Staff have the experience to ensure the stress of requiring in-home assistance doesn’t become a burden for those needing such support. When at-home care is your preferred choice, contact Miranda Smith Homecare, New Zealand’s most experienced private homecare provider.

The Home Maintenance and Safety programme aims to help older people stay in their own homes longer by keeping on top of house maintenance and repairs. Often this work is put off because it feels like it is too hard or could cost too much.

There is an online checklist for inside and outside the house, which gives information on priority and who might do the repairs. You can download this tool from Age Concern’s website: www.ageconcerntauranga.org.nz A printed copy is available from our office at a small cost.

If you would prefer to have your home assessed by a professional company, Age Concern will refer you to Total Home Inspection Services, who have agreed to do the inspection for us at an agreed price. They will provide a report with photographs and give an indication of priority work. Age Concern will provide follow up assistance.
