What?a library in which collections are

stored in digital formats (as opposed to print, microform, or other media) and accessible by

computers.

The DELOS Digital Library Reference Model :An organization, which might be virtual, that comprehensively collects, manages and preserves for the long term rich digital content.

Why?

1) THE COLLECTION OF SERVICES:• provides a variety of services to all of its users.

• Examples:• services to support management of collections,

services to provide replicated and reliable storage, services to aid in query formulation and execution,

services to assist in name resolution and location, etc.

2) Supporting users deal with information objects:

The goal of the digital library is to assist users by satisfying their needs and requirements for management,

access, storage, and manipulation of the variety of information stored in the collection of material that

represents the "holdings" of the library
