Most N.A. on the Great Plains were nomadic – always moving from one place to another.

They followed their main source of food – the buffalo.

Created in 1867, it proposed creating large reservations for N.A. run by the federal government.

Ultimately unsuccessful

Whites disrupted hunting grounds, broke treaties guaranteeing lands, and forced N.A. to relocate.

Whites also slaughtered the buffalo

Highly respected Lakota Sioux Chief.

Very defiant toward the efforts of the whites.

June 26, 1876

A large camp of Cheyenne and Sioux Indians defeated General Custer and 268 US soldiers.

“Custer’s Last Stand”

Law passed in 1887 which allotted reservation land to N.A. for farming and ranching.

A Ghost Dance ritual swept through the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in 1890 – striking fear in the authorities.

200+ Sioux men, women, and children are massacred by U.S. soldiers.
