Hello again, the TQG Quilt Show is

fast approaching and the planning is

now in full swing. Karan Fisher and

her Board are doing an amazing job

and another fantastic show is prom-

ised.

I am excited to see all the quilts

made by you all over the past 2 years

- I have had a sneak peak of a few

and cannot wait to see the full selec-

tion.

There are still some spots available

for volunteering at the show, so if

you have a little spare time during

the 17th or 18th August just ping me

an e-mail and I’ll sign you up.

David Sirota treated us to a hilarious

talk about being a quilter at this

month’s day and night meetings, and

some of you also had a fun packed

day learning his no tears method of

paper piecing to create some beauti-

ful examples of the Storm at Sea. I

have had many requests for a return

visit from him and hope that next

year he will return with his version of

the New York Beauty.

I hope you all have a great summer

and, wherever you travel, be safe and

have fun. For those who are staying

closer to home, I look forward to see-

ing you at the Quilt Show

July Sat minutes Christy Prenger called meeting to order. Program was the member garage sale. There were 36 members and 5 guests present. It is time to renew annual membership. $25.00 See Linda Kelly The August program will be a Sudoku puzzle that will turn into a quilt or wall hanging. Christy will get the specifics out via email so everyone will know what to bring. Cindy Hutton reported that the Quilt Show Challenge pieces are due. Sybil Magrill reported that the deadline for registration for the quilt show is July 20. The quilt does not have to be finished to register, just finished by the turn in date. Quilt turn in days are Saturday August 4 at the Saturday guild meeting or on August 12, at Wyclift Presbyterian Church. See special newsletter for details. Sheets are going around for volunteer signups for many different jobs needed to put on this show. We encourage everyone to pitch in and help as this is our biggest fund raiser. There is a signup sheet for appraisals by Lynn Wilder of Williamsburg. QOV - Sew days are July 20 at A Different Touch and July 21 at VFW 4890 (across the street from the side of the old Toys R Us on Military Hwy.) A presentation of quilts was made in June to 26 women of the Military Women of Tidewater at this VFW. Also included were 2 husbands of guild members. Block of the Month - 14 members participated and Rose-mary Rooney won the squares. We will continue this pro-ject next year. UFO Challenge. Ruth Nixon won the topper challenge with all 5 of her tops completed and won the unclaimed $45 fees. Jan Krebs won the completed quilt challenge winning $ 99. Scrap Diva - Betsy Kessler reported that she had delivered 23 pet beds in May and 13 more in June to the SPCA in VB. She will no longer be taking non quilt fabric - other types of fabric should be taken back by those who brought them. Thank you to all who have taken premade beds home to stuff with your scraps. Thank you to everyone who is helping cut scraps into precuts. There is not a planned project for the 'precuts' yet. Small baggies of scraps will be at every meeting for members to take home and cut into the biggest square possible (1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5 and 5 inch squares - no blocks) and strips starting at 1.5 inches, Several ideas

suggested so far: put together for some prizes like at this past spring fling; package and sell by size to sell at next year's quilt show, bundle and present to new quilters to build their stash, as an additional choice for door prizes. Ideas wel-come. Goal is to make this material more usable instead of throwing it away. Thanks to all who are bringing them back. Raffle Quilts - Tickets are still available for both raffle quilts - Volunteers to work the raffle tables are needed and spots are included on the Quilt Show volunteer list. Door prizes were won by Debbie Wright and Christie Pringer.

Greetings Fellow Quilters!!!

My name is Christie Prenger and I am the new coordinator

for the Saturday Chapter. I wanted to introduce myself and

briefly outline a few things we are planning for the upcoming

year. Many details still need to be determined and will be

released as soon as they are nailed down. I have some really

big shoes to fill by taking Heather’s place, and I hope to make

things as fun and exciting as she did.

We have had a great response to the UFO challenge in the

past, and we shall continue it. It is a great motivator to get

some projects off the “To-Do” list and on to the D.O.N.E.

list!!! A measly $5 donation at the start of the program and

the potential to win the kitty at the end of the program may

be just the nudge you need to get stuff done. If you are in-

terested, start digging in your piles of UFO’s to select the pro-

jects you want to get finished. Consider that Christmas is just

around the corner, and some of these could make great gifts

this year.

In addition to the UFO challenge being a hit, our BOM pro-

gram has had great success as well. I am working with Jo-

anne Parlante, our programs person, to continue the BOM

program. We loved the idea of holding one block back each

month and raffling off the reserved blocks at the end of the

year to make an awesome sampler quilt.

The program for August is a Suduko quilt. For those that love

the number puzzle, this should be fun. We will start by solv-

ing an Easy level Suduko number puzzle. Don’t worry if you

don’t know how, or don’t like to do them, I will also provide

the solution. This will become the pattern for a very simple 9

-patch quilt top. See page 14 for details.

Laura Storm discussed the Library Book Challenge... there is still time to do the challenge! Night Chapter is still in need of Greeters for the door as well as Night Librarian. Program: David Sirota presented a won-derful program about his quilts. Using on-ly two colors on a quilt, David showed us his creations and they were beautiful! He is not only a talented quilt maker, but a co-median as well-he kept us laughing throughout his talk. David will have a dis-play at the Mancuso show in Hampton in

The night chapter still has a few positions left open. We need 2 greeters, a library person, someone for magazines and a stand in for block of the month. Sybil will be going on deployment but wants the job back upon her return next year. This per-son will need to assume the position starting in September; she will have kits made for sale.

Please give your local presenter program suggestions to Barbara Vranjican.

August’s program will be a trunk show by

Joan Bryan “My Quilting Journey” which

will be about her journey to quilting, use of

color and other helpful hints. The yard sale

will be held in January when we all need to

clean out all those unwanted items to fulfill

those New Year resolutions.

FIRST AQS SHOW GETTING CLOSE!

We are nearly ready for our show and it’s time to sign up to as-sist with the AQS Show scheduled for October 3-6 of this year. We recently received the list of volunteers required by AQS and we will need all of your help.

The racks will be assembled and broken down by AQS person-nel but they need us to handle the quilts to ensure they will be taken care of properly.

The list of lectures and classes are open and are on their web-site. http://www.quiltweek.com/locations/virginia-beach Please visit the site and check it out. Some of the classes are already filling up. They do not require helpers for the classes but each lecture requires 3-4 volunteers to take the tickets, hold up quilts, etc.

We will have space for our raffle quilt, a small silent auction and a check station for people to hold their bags, coats, etc. We will be keeping all funds from these stations.

In addition, the guild will receive $1,000 and each volunteer will get free admission for the day they volunteer. So a 2-3 hour volunteers stint each day can get you in to the see show all 4 days with no admission cost.

We only have two more months of meetings and the quilt show to sign up for the jobs. So sign up soon. Betts Werbiskis (757) 434-2557 and Ann Walls (757) 407-4439 will be there to get you involved. If you cannot attend the meetings, call one of them to sign up.

The annual inventory of the books is go-ing on, and librarians in chapter meetings are only collecting books, and not checking them out. Chapters will have collections with new items in Sep-tember. All books checked out are due in the August meetings, whether Chal-lenge books or no. Please check your workrooms for Library items!

The website's Library listing has a (nearly) current listing of our collection by Title or by Author. Yes, it's usable now. Even better, as part of the invento-ry all old titles and the new ones you haven't seen yet are going into Access instead of Excel and they're getting (yes!!) Subject classification num-bers!!! I've been working on this for a few years now, and it should be available sometime this fall. Books will continue to have their colored and numbered tags in the collections - the class numbers will be browsable in each chapter's library notebook, and online. I hope you're all going to find this useful.

Guild Library Challenge

Back in March all three chapters began the Library Challenge! The basic idea was to check out a Guild Library book, make something based on it, and then show the result with a brief talk about the book. Many, many books were checked out for this (great news for the library!) and the origi-nal August deadline is coming up!

The rules were these:

Minimum size = 1620 square inches. No maximum size. This could be done as a set, for example, a table runner and placemats could total the necessary area,.

Technique and method = anything that has a top, batting, quilting and binding is allowable.

Completion = yes. No incomplete or unfinished items.

Use of book = Use a pattern or be inspired by a story or illustration. Be prepared to tell something about how the book inspired your project, and about the book generally.

Prizes = yes. This will be by a drawing among all the items shown and de-clared as part of the Library Challenge. Show your item during Show-and-Tell, and make sure the chapter librarian got your name and the name of the book you used.

Because of the upcoming shows and deadlines, the board decided to ex-tend the deadline for the Library Challenge to the December meetings! This means that you still have time to start and finish something for the challenge!

Be careful, though: August is still the due date for all the books already out, and your librarians would much rather check books out to you than call and email to get them returned! The annual book inventory requires all of them back in, at least for a time.

Library Quilt Challenge Continued:

What to do if you have a book and want to show your work later? Make note of title, author and library number (that's the Red, Blue or Yellow tag and number in the top right of the cover), make some notes about what you want to say and anything you still need to finish your piece, and turn the book in. You might check it out again before showing your item, or just tell about it by name.

New projects will be able to check out books in September, when all the collections are back out.
