You’ve got this!
I am borrowing and adapting something one of my oldest friends posted on Face-book:
Don’t worry about your child(ren) re-gressing in school. Please remember that every stu-dent is in the same situation and we’ll all be okay. When they are back in the classroom, teachers will all course-correct to meet students where they are and bring them up from there. Teachers are experts at this! Don’t lose your temper because they are struggling to do their homework. Don’t stress if they don’t follow a perfect schedule. Don’t mandate learning. Encourage it. If I can leave you with one thing, it’s this: At the end of all of this, your child(ren)’s mental health will be more im-portant than their academic skills. How they felt during this time will stay with them long after the memory of what they did during these weeks at home is gone. Please keep this in mind—every single day.
Social Media
I made a post about Facebook last week. Seward Secondary maintains several
pages to communicate with various teams and interest groups within our larg-
er learning community. I’m hopeful that you’re all pretty well comfortable gath-
ering information about school from this social media platform. To that end, I’d
like you to consider encouraging/supporting your child(ren) to open their own
account and/or search and “Like” Seward Middle and/or Seward High. There
is a virtual spirit week posted on Facebook and we’d like to get as many stu-
dents as possible to participate. I know they’ll tell you the Facebook is lame
and they’d rather play on their Instagram, Snap Chat, or Tik Tok accounts.
However, I’m hopeful that they’ll use a Facebook account so that we can main-
tain our social interactions, the goofiness, creativity, wittiness, and connec-
tions that we so dearly miss during this school closure. This should be a safe
place for them, and us, to stay connected.

Social Distancing Reminder!
Parents! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE require your child(ren) to maintain “Aggressive” Social Distancing of GREATER than 6’. I’m hearing rumors about students riding around together in each other’s cars, walking around town, and students in relationships seen together in public places. I know these mandates are particularly difficult for our young and very social population, but the short-term disruption most certainly outweighs the potential long-term consequences for the entire community. PLEASE keep your child(ren) at home. This is so criti-cal!
Advocacy
Training students to seek help and ask questions is critical to their success in school. Advocacy is a life skill. This is especially true in this new age of remote instruction. Teachers have worked hard to provide instruction and assessment while balancing the added stress this creates at home. They are poised to as-sist students and their families whenever and however they can. Here’s the trick, however…there is still no technology that allows teachers to read minds. YOU MUST reach out. Call. Email. Text. Post. Send up the Bat Signal…we will connect so that your child(ren) can connect.
My door isn’t open, but my email and phone are. [email protected] or (907) 224-9066.

Nurse’s Corner- Online Student Appointments with Nurse
As we all adjust to try and communicate online, I want to continue to con-nect with students and parents/guardians. The concept of telehealth is widely usedih. Our villages have long utilized this form of health care deliv-ery. I am holding virtual nurse office hours through Zoom. My office hours will be Monday-Friday from 9am-12pm. Email or call and let me know when you want to meet on Zoom and I will send an invitation to your email. Ac-cept my invitation and you have an appt. with Nurse Yoly. My contact infor-mation is [email protected]. Telephone # is 224-9018. Please leave a message and I will return your call.
Remote Nursing Services for students can include but not limited to:
1. Answering Student health-related questions ie medications, nutrition, Covid-19, asthma, allergies, cardiac issues, diabetes, skin issues, stress, anxiety, depression to name a few health concerns.
2. Guidance for home care treatments and possible referral for additional medical care.
-Nurse Yoly
Teachers will be available from 8:00-10:00 Monday-Thursday
and all day Friday to work 1-on-1 with students, organize small group work sessions,
and/or be available to answer students’ questions if/when they reach out to their teachers.
It’s important to recognize that this schedule exists SPECIFICALLY so that teachers don’t
double-book students for whole-group activities or live video conference lessons. It’s also
important to recognize that teachers will not ALWAYS schedule whole group or live video
conference lessons during these times. In fact, the bulk of students’ instruction will occur
asynchronously— where they can log in, access instructional material (uploaded videos,
assigned readings, on-line research), and complete assessment activities to demonstrate
learning anytime and anywhere that they can find internet connectivity. However, IF
teachers organize a whole-group and/or live video conference lesson, THEN students are
required to be present. Finally, I recognize a number of you will have difficulty setting up
workstations at home. I believe that our personal phone calls and Needs Assessment Sur-
vey have identified those barriers and we will be working with individual families to either
overcome those barriers or provide protocols for sharing hard copies of instructional and
assessment materials. I know there is much concern about students beginning their re-
mote learning on Monday— particularly as many students won’t yet have the instructional
and personal items out of their lockers. Seward Secondary teachers will not schedule any
live events until Wednesday, April 1st. Concerning returned and newly checked out devic-
es: IF you are receiving a newly checked out device from the school, THEN it is imperative
that students log in to our network BEFORE taking devices home. In short, students’ pro-
files MUST be uploaded and updated on our network so that the device recognizes them
when they log on to a network away from school. Unfortunately, the Governor’s School
Closure Directive, through May 1st, is still in effect. This means that students MUST ac-
cess our WiFi from your vehicles. I know that our WiFi reaches our traffic pattern in sever-
al places—the best bet at the high school is the North and South doors. You can get clos-
est to the Middle School from the North parking lot. Finally, if you receive a device with a
dead battery, then you’ll need to charge it at home and then COME BACK to log your stu-
dent on our network.

Dear Parents & Students,
Thank you for your understanding, flexibility, and most importantly, your trust in our teachers and staff to continue to hold your student’s best interests close as we navigate through these tru-
ly historic times!
KPBSD educators are working carefully to: Ensure students have an appropriate balance of online and offline work so students do not spend too much time in front of a computer. Define ap-propriate amounts of work for students to perform in a Remote Learning environment. This link
describes workload descriptions, separated by grade spans with time recommendations. Ensure every student has access to learning materials and activities, regardless of computer and inter-
net access at home.
Although delivery of our Remote Learning instruction will primarily take place online, parents and students will have access to hard copies of materials as needed. Principals and teachers are
working directly with parents, and there are various options for both delivery of material, as well as returning completed work back to teachers. Kindly work with your student’s teacher, or princi-
pal, for arrangements that work for your family situation.
As school districts around our state and nation begin shifting where and how instruction hap-pens, Alaska Department of Education and Early Development Commissioner Michael Johnson
reminded us that “Teaching is not a location; it’s a relationship and action.” Regardless of where and how we serve parents, guardians, and students, we are committed first, to maintain and en-
hance our relationships with parents and students, while also providing the highest quality in-struction possible.
There is no question that challenges face us ahead as we navigate this new format of teaching and learning, but KPBSD is prepared, and our teachers and staff are up to the challenge. Working
together to accomplish great things is what Alaska has always been about, and we have confi-dence in our ability to work in partnership to provide the best learning experiences for every one
of our 8,500 students!
These next few months will require a growth mindset for each of us. Our families and students know that the school district staff is here to help as together we navigate
the shift to virtual schooling and remote learning activities. We have an opportunity to learn together, and ask you to join in this historic time to learn, stretch, and discover things we did not know we could do! Message from the KPBSD Instructional Team -

Dear families,
During this major interruption to our normal routines and schedules it’s normal to experi-ence a wide range of feelings-- I know my emotions have been all over the map. Talking and writing about your worries, fears, and hopes can be helpful.
What we are in the middle of right now has been referred to as "crisis-schooling", which is not the same as homeschooling or traditional online learning. Everything we expected about Spring semester has drastically and abruptly changed as safety and security become our primary learning goals. In varying degrees, we all may be experiencing the different stages of grief as a result of the aggressive social distancing that has closed the doors to schools, restaurants, churches and community centers.
Please know its normal to feel overwhelmed, anxious, helpless, angry, numb, depressed, frustrated, agitated--as well as to experience moments of beauty, joy and grace. Its ok if you aren't as productive as you imagined given more time--give your self permission to feel, to stay in bed for hours or walk away from the computer to go outside for a walk, call a friend or create art, do whatever brings you comfort, and know that even though we are apart, we are all in this moment together.
I am available for both students and families to reach out to during the du-ration of this disruption. You can email me at [email protected] or call at 224-9070. (Even if I am not in the office my voicemail is forwarded to my email account so I can return calls.)
As we continue to figure out digital learning and communication I will be in touch with more ways we can stay connected. Please remember, above all else, to be kind to each other and yourself during these stressful times.
With respect and gratitude,
Christy Jordan Seward

May We Still Find A Way To Touch Each Other
First came sports, then concerts, then school, no more birthday par-ties or potlucks, weddings and fu-neral indefinitely postponed, long gone vacations, carnivals, races, and community celebrations.
Social contact halted by microscop-ic germs, by the tyranny of the tini-est of cells, by a virus who doesn't care about our calendars.
So we wash our hands to the tune of a song we no longer sing amongst friends, and we hunker down in our homes, hoping this is only an interruption to our regularly scheduled programs, a pause to re-flect on what of all the hubbub and buzz remains essential, and what can be washed down the drain with our suds.
I know what I miss most of all, more than parties, festivals, or shows, more than restaurants, movie thea-ters, or sports arenas, is hand-shakes, high-fives and hugs. Espe-cially the hugs.
When the sun rises on the day we emerge from our houses, hesitant, but willing to reengage with a wounded world, may we still find a way to touch each other.
May we still find a way to touch each other.
-Christy Jordan
