BEGINNING SEWING $319 FOR SERIES; $109 each 4-week level (includes patterns & handouts) Mon, Sept 9-Nov 25, 6-9 pm OR Tues, Sept 10-Nov 26, 10 am-1 pm OR 6-9 pm Learn basic stitches, techniques and how to use your machine while making an apron (Level 1), robe (Level 2) and nightshirt (Level 3). Step up your skills with each level. Learn to use commercial patterns, layout and cut fabric. Each level 4 weeks.

APPAREL CONSTRUCTION $319 FOR SERIES; $109 each 4-week level (includes patterns & handouts) Weds, Sept 11-Nov 27, 10 am-1 pm OR 6-9 pm Upgrade your skills. Start making clothes.  Make an A-line skirt or man’s vest with a zipper (Level 1), beach pants (Level 2) and camp shirt or dress (Level 3). Make garments fit. Unlock the secrets of elastic, interfacing. Sew buttons, buttonholes. Each level 4 weeks.

CORSETS & BUSTIERS $249 or $448 with PETTICOATS (includes pattern) Saturdays, Sept 14–Oct 19, 2-5 pm Create a beautiful multi-layered coutil and fashion fabric corset from the pros at Portland Opera.  Choose from an over bust or under bust corset. Either has multiple panels, spiral steel boning, front busk closure, waist stay, back lacing closure and bias bound edges.

PETTICOATS $249 (includes pattern) Saturdays, Oct 26–Dec 7, 2-5 pm Learn from Portland Opera how to layer organza, tulle, net and batiste and eyelet properly to make a petticoat for your wedding dress, party dress, costume or to wear as a skirt.

PANTS & JEANS $249 (includes pattern) Thursdays, Sept 12–Oct 17, 6-9 pm Create your own well-fitting jeans: skinny, flared, stovepipe or high-waisted or make overalls. Men’s pants and jeans too.

Textiles Inside the Fashion Industry Weaving

WEAVING $249 (includes kit) Tuesdays, Oct 22-Nov 26, 6-9 pm Get into weaving by building a simple frame loom, understanding weaving terminology and mastering basic weaving techniques. Design and create two woven samplers and one embellishment.

Machine Knitting

MACHINE KNITTING $449 for series (includes kit) Thursdays, Sept 12-Dec 5, 6-9 pm (no class Thanksgiving) Use our single bed machines and wonderful yarns to make garments in a few hours instead of months. Cast-on, cast-off, increase, decrease and cable to make samples in Level 1. In Level 2 shape, contour, link and rib to make a sweater. Then bring your own machine for a week of MK intensive Dec 9-13.

Create patterns digitally from first draft to tech pack.

TEXTILE DESIGN with TRICIA LANGMANHAND PAINTING AND DYEING $249 (+kit) Saturday-Sunday, October 5 & 6, 9:30 am-3:30 pm Use dyeing techniques of the past to create scarfs and fabrics. Learn tie-dye and hand painting techniques, shibori & batik.

FABRIC PRINTING $249 (+ kit) Saturday-Sunday, October 12 & 13, 9:30 am-3:30 pm Produce fabric samples, a length of fabric and create surface designs suitable for garments or home decor. Learn screen-printing, stenciling and devoré, Japanese katazome printing, block and mono printing techniques.

Learn to identify sources of research, analyze past trends and apply the findings to predict the future.

October 12 Costing & Pricing with Dana Ditto, Nike What do things really cost? How much should you spend on fabric? Notions? Tools? Learn a costing strategy that will allow you to plan what you can afford. Find out how much to charge for your product.

September 14 Start an Apparel Business with Vivian McInerny, author & former Oregonian fashion editor + Sharon Blair, Portland Fashion Institute Learn the basics of setting up your apparel business: How to protect your name, set up your infrastructure, deal with the city, state and taxes, do business with other apparel businesses, get into textile and trade shows, find out about EIN, RN other acronyms, rules and regulations. Get some ideas about getting financing.

October 5 Excel for Apparel Professionals with Dana Ditto, Nike You must know Microsoft Excel to manage your costs, track your business and to create a spec sheet. In this class, you will learn how to create formulas & calculations, spreadsheets, cost sheets, tech packs and measurement charts.

September 28 Get Noticed! PR techniques with Kim Bedwell, sr vice president, FLM Harvest Public Relations Get coverage from bloggers, and the news media while learning the four basic tips for visibility. Eden will guide you though how to make contact with media and when they would like to hear from you. Then she’ll talk about how to get ready for your conversation.

November 16 Truth about Trade Shows with Jason Calderon, West Daily & S Group It's where you go to meet with buyers, take orders and meet sales representatives. But it can be expensive and take a chunk out of your travel budget and time. Meet with an expert who has been there to discuss the pros and cons of doing a show and the costs.

November 9 Working with Boutiques & Buyers with Celeste Sipes, ThunderPants USA Approach stores and make a sale that will make both you and the store owner happy. Learn the five mistakes most designers make and how to turn them around to make a negative into a positive. End this class with a game plan for approaching boutiques with your product line.

October 19 Sourcing 101 with Dana Ditto, Nike Where will you get your fabric and labor? Answer your questions about where to buy locally, regionally and nationally plus the the pros and cons of going overseas. Discuss duty, quota, agency fees, customs, NAFTA/CAFTA/WTO and going to textile markets.

November 2 Working with Production Houses with Jason Calderon, West Daily & S Group There are 25 production houses in the Portland area. But independent designers can't find them or get them to return calls. That's because quality production houses are busy and won't waste time with you if you don't know how to talk to them. Find out what you need in order to get your product sewn at the right time, right way and right price.

November 23 Social Media Marketing with Rebecca Russell, social media strategist, Wieden + Kennedy Get the secrets of how to use Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and Google+ to get you noticed.
