Treasurer’s Report Elaine A.

Finally, after being away for a month and another month of being ill and then recuperating, I found time to pay a few outstanding bills. One of the bills that was outstanding was our rent for our meetings at Gloria Dei. I sent a cheque to cover the six months until summer. The secretary phoned me this morning and said that we were not going to be charged for the days that were cancelled because of the corona virus. It was very generous of them. We can use the extra rent to subsidize one or two workshops in the fall. Look forward to seeing you all when we can finally meet.

REPORTS

MEMBERSHIP Maureen and Anne R.

Hello Members!!

Are you “In the Pink’? So it is Cherry Blossom time and Anne has kindly offered to

you her latest photos of Cherry Blossoms in Lynn Valley that she sees on her walks.

So our May colour is PINK!!!

Toward the end of the 1925 novel The Great Gatsby, Jay shows up to lunch with his

mistress and her husband in a pink suit. Why would a man choose to wear the colour of Mary Kay, breast-

cancer research tie-ins and kitchen gadgets galore? When cuckolded husband Tom Buchanan criticizes

Gatsby for wearing pink, he seemingly echoes the present-day assumption that pink is a feminine color.

But that would be imposing today's view of pink on the past. Buchanan uses the suit's hue not to discredit

Gatsby's masculinity or virility, but his intellectual bona fides. He mentions it only when Gatsby is

described as an Oxford man: "[Buchanan] was incredulous. 'Like hell he is! He wears a pink suit.'"

Buchanan's comments make it clear that men in pink meant something different in the 1920s than today.

According to an interview with the costume designer for Baz Luhrmann's recent film, the colour had

working-class connotations thus, “Pink collar work”. Only in the relatively recent past did pink acquire its

feminine connotations.

You may be surprised to learn that there is a dark side to this color. It has been used a tool of control for

centuries.

Architectural historian Annmarie Adams traces the colour back to Nazi Germany. Just as the Nazis

forced Jewish people to wear a yellow badge to identify themselves, they forced gay men to wear a pink

badge. Ever since then, pink became a non-masculine colour reserved for girls.

Once pink started to embody femininity, some wondered if it could be used to “tame” aggressive male

behavior. Beginning in the 1980s, a handful of prison wardens painted holding cells in prisons and jails pink.

The hope was that the colour would have a calming effect on the male prisoners. Pink’s cultural

significance can also vary widely between countries. In contemporary Japanese culture, pink is perceived

as a masculine and mournful colour that represents “young warriors who fall in battle while in the full

bloom of life”.

Pinks, also known as Carnations are part of the Dianthus Caryophyllus family. The first known mentions

of ‘pinks’ comes from Greek and Latin literature. The dianthus flowers were used in garlands or wreaths

and given in celebration. The name ‘pink’ to early Christians represented the flowers that sprang up from

the tears that Mary shed when Jesus carried the cross. It represented undying “Mother

Love”. Nowadays often given for Mother’s Day, or used in bridal bouquets.

Like most ‘wild’ flowers it had the ability to “Naturalize” to conditions and is often found on old stone walls

and rocky patches.

COMMUNITY QUILTS Connie and Linda F. Greetings from Community Quilts: I hope you are all staying safe in this time of uncharted territory. If you are quilting a quilt for the community I would like some lap quilts for the care aides at Lynn Valley Lodge. These aides are working very hard and are feeling frightened that they may contact the virus. To let them know we care, I think it would be a nice gesture to provide some Comfort Quilts for the aides who are suffering emotionally and physically. If you would like to contribute you can call me at 604-980-7872 and I will inform you of drop-off details.

Keep safe and hope that we can meet again soon❤ Connie

WEBSITE Judy S. http://seymourqg.wordpress.com

Thanks to all who have contributed to the Staying Connected posts that I’m sending out on Fridays. People have told me that they are enjoying them. Plus, I get the first look at all the interesting projects that members are working on! If you send me photos and stories, we can keep this going. Most of the quilt shows listed on the website are cancelled, of course. On another topic, I ordered a quilting notion online recently, something I seldom do but thought I would try. So I am eagerly awaiting an envelope containing my thimble pads, which are coming from Christine at Fibre Expressions in Sechelt, who brought them in for me. Thanks, quilt shop owners and postal workers!

Keep well. Judy

SPECIAL REQUESTS

North Shore Crisis Services: This request arrived from NSCCS, asking us to sew fabric masks for the clients of Sage House. This facility provides a safe haven for women and their children, so they need child sizes and adult size masks. The masks should be made of a washable, double layer of cotton. They will be given to clients so that they can be worn in communal areas. We all recognize that these are not medical grade masks and do not protect the wearer, but they might help to protect others who are nearby. We also have had the importance of hand washing and physical distancing burned into our brains. While this is not a guild event, it is one that you might consider to take on yourself. I will be delivering the 10 masks that I’ve made to the NSCCS director today, and plan on making some more. I’m hoping to get some feed-back about the sizing so that I can make any necessary adjustments. The internet is awash with information and free patterns. I’ve been making the accordion pleated design. I know other members have been using other designs. If you are interested, call me at 604-984-6195 and I can help with ideas, as well as collect finished masks for delivery to Sage House.

Palliative Care Volunteers (and a group of volunteer sewers):

Members of SQG and LGQG have been asked to donate fabric to the LGH/ NS Hospice as they are in dire need of fabric. Donations of good quality 100% cotton, ranging upwards from 1/4 metre, will be sewn into gowns and pillowcases for the palliative care patients and scrub caps for the staff. While self-isolating at home, start collecting fabric pieces that you would like to donate with the Hospice in mind. In our NEXT newsletter I’ll let you know the details of where and when you can drop-off your much needed donations.
