Dear students, parents and staff

Last week the second College Community Consulta on was held in our new Library and Resources facility on Tuesday, 13 September. On behalf of the Board and Leadership Team, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the evening’s presenta on about the progress that has been achieved in the 12 months since the release of the Neville Highe Whole School Review. The recommenda ons of the review were categorised into five key areas: Staff Development; Student Development; Governance and Compliance; Facili es and Master Site Plan; Communica on and Engagement. Of the recommenda ons, we were happy to report that over 90% have either been completed or are underway, with the remaining few set for comple on by mid next year. Over 80 individuals including parents, student and staff, provided some valuable feedback in the evening’s work groups, which as helped define the immediate priori es as iden fied by the College Community. An outline of the feedback is summarised in the page “Mini Blueprint”. The Leadership Team has already started to consider ways of improving communica on throughout the College: Based on the success of this evening, we will run another consulta on to coincide with the

launch of the Strategic Plan in early 2017 Also, commencing on the first and third Thursdays of every month, at least whilst we

complete the Strategic Planning process, Mrs Gina Kadis and Mr Peter Karamoshos will host an Open Morning Tea from 8:30am—9:30am. This is an opportunity for parents to drop in and speak with Gina and Peter about ideas for the College. A copy of Neville Highe recommenda ons will be available for parents to read or refer to in this me. The first Morning Tea will be held on Thursday, 20 October 2016 in Gina’s office.

Moving forward, the Board will con nue to report on progress but I encourage you to drop in and have a chat with Gina and Peter as their conversa ons can be more pointed as to how these developments and adjustments over the coming months actually impact on the whole educa on of our students—as individuals and as a community. I would also like to extend my thanks to Gina and Peter for their enthusias c and infec ous energy. Yours sincerely Mr Bill Gonis Board Chairman

Na onal Science Week | “Drones, Droids and Robots” This year’s celebra on of Na onal Science Week was even ul and full of surprises. Many compe ons and ac vi es were organised on both campuses and all students had an opportunity to be involved and celebrate this special week. Cake stalls with robot themed cookies and cupcakes were set up on both campuses for all the students (and staff) to enjoy. Many students also entered the ‘lolly jar’ guessing compe ons and purchased raffle ckets for their chance to win one of many great prizes. Colouring in compe ons were a hit amongst Junior Primary students and Middle School students designed and created robot models and amazing posters, highligh ng the importance of robots, drones and droids in today’s society. It was very difficult to pick winners as all of our students put in a lot of effort and did a wonderful job with their compe on entries. At last, the winning pictures, models and posters were chosen for each year level. An assembly was held at both Junior and Senior Campuses to announce the lucky winners. In addi on to all the prizes that were awarded at the assembly, students had an opportunity to watch a demonstra on of the drone flight. The drone was won at the Science Expo by Year 10 student Ele heria Pirintzis. Big congratula ons to Ele heria and thank you for winning the drone for our College. We are sure that many students will enjoy using the drone in future Science lessons.

Planetarium Visit

On Friday, 23 September, Year 5 students went on an excursion to the Mawson Lakes Planetarium. We were greeted by our guide Jeff and were taken into a room where the fun began! We saw different things in our Solar System including Saturn, Jupiter, the Moon and of course Earth. A er seeing these planets, Jeff used the special projector that put constella ons and stars on the ceiling. Constella ons included Scorpio, the Southern Cross and the Warrior. A er seeing all of those fascina ng things, we saw a movie called “Wildest Weather in the Solar System”. We went through most of the planets and moons and saw what kinds of weather they have, such as the dust storms on Mars, the extreme temperatures on Venus and who can’t forget the raining diamonds on Neptune! A er the movie we were allowed to walk around to see interes ng things such as a glass cabinet that had newspaper clippings with interes ng informa on about our Solar System. A er we said our goodbyes to Jeff, we hopped back on the bus back to St George College. Class 5V would like to give a special thanks to Mrs Paronis and Mrs Kadis for oganising this fun excursion for us. Wri en by Katerina Panayi and Ri k Kundu | Year 5 SRC Representa ves

Cri cal and Crea ve Thinking Year 5 and 6 students have been introduced to two crea ve and cri cal thinking models in class this term, namely Tony Ryan’s Thinkers Keys and Ques vi es. Both models involve students genera ng and applying new ideas in specific contexts, seeing exis ng situa ons in a new way, iden fying alterna ve explana ons and seeing or making new links that generate a posi ve outcome. Using these models, both classes completed a number of ac vi es based on the Rio Olympic Games. The Year 5 students were involved in using Tony Ryan’s Thinkers Keys. Ac vi es included finding commonali es between a spectator and an athlete, sugges ng ways that host countries could be selected, brainstorming solu ons to problems for the host country due to the expense of holding the games and jus fying the statement ‘no athletes should be sponsored by governments or brands’. The Year 6 students were involved in Ques vi es, which is a cri cal thinking model whereby students compared the Olympic Games with other worldly events, analysing event a ributes with the host country and analysing the importance of the Olympic Games. Students thoroughly enjoyed this model of teaching and learning and the challenge of thinking outside the square. Sonia Vogiatzis | Year 5 Teacher Georgia Ktanis | Year 6 Teacher

Grandparent’s Day The recent celebra on of Grandparents Day on the Junior Campus reinforced the real sense of community that exists within St George College. The strong bond between students, parents, grandparents and the College was evident on Friday morning which involved classroom visits, morning tea and musical performances. It was heartening to watch grandparents interact with the students in the classrooms. No doubt, the children had talked to their grandparents about their classrooms, their learning, their teachers and their school environment so this gave a chance for the grandparents to put this all in perspec ve. It was a long way down for the adults to sit in the ny classroom chairs but it was obvious the students appreciated their grandparents reading, listening and sharing. The hardworking Parents and Friends of St George College provided a wonderful morning tea for our visitors. A terrific array of pastries, sandwiches, sweets and fruit along with coffee and tea catered for everybody’s tastes. The morning tea also provided the opportunity for grandparents to rekindle the bonds and friendships between them. A number of student performances gave grandparents a snapshot of the crea ve aspects of learning on the Junior Campus. The musical performance included all students in one class playing the recorder, a number of songs (with choreographed movements) from other classes and popular Greek dancing to finish. Further evidence of the strength of connec on between our families was in seeing students, parents, grandparents and teachers all joining together to dance to Zorba at the end of the performance. It was terrific to acknowledge our grandparents and recognise the important role they play in suppor ng the growth of our children. Many of the grandparents do the pick up and drop off, provide meals to grandchildren and children, and help with homework. Even more important is them sharing their wisdom and experience, and reinforcing the values and tradi ons we hold so dear. While we make a big deal of our grandparents once a year at the College, I trust we all remind them o en just how important they are to us every day. Mr Peter Karamoshos | Deputy Principal

Mentoring at the Junior Campus

Our mentors this year are Year 12 students, Ruby Leventeris and Mariah Kosmidis. Ruby and Mariah visit once a week to help us during our Maths lessons and help us understand the ques ons we are given. They are happy, cheerful and never give up on helping us learn. The Year 12 girls are very smart and intelligent and also listen to the tasks they’re given by the teachers and students. They are excep onal mentors and do very well in Maths and also in their other subjects. They have given up some of their study me for us. All of these reasons are why Ruby and Mariah are very good mentors and it will be sad to see them leave our College. Our fellow classmates had the following to say about our Mentors: “Ruby  and Mariah  helped  me  with  Maths  and  angles.    They  also  helped  me  to  measure  angles  in degrees using a protractor”. ‐ Michael Nikos, Year 4  “When I’m stuck with my Maths, Ruby and Mariah help me out.  I’ve enjoyed having them in our class because they are friendly.  It’s a nice way to start the week having extra help in the classroom”. ‐ Eleni Stamoulis, Year 4  “When Ruby and Mariah come into our classroom they help me to divide and add large numbers.  It’s a lot of fun having them with us.  When they are in the room I know they are going to help me”. ‐ Jonathan Ruigira, Year 4

Year 4’s in Full Flight!

On Wednesday, 21 September the Year 4 students along with Mrs Moro and Sylvia Stamoulis took a trip to the Avia on Museum at Port Adelaide. We have been learning about flight in Science so it was a wonderful way to test our knowledge! We were split into 2 groups and taken on a journey through the museum with the help of a tour guide. One of the guides was Jim and the other was Steve. We observed fighter planes, rockets, fuel tanks and passenger planes just to name a few. We were fortunate to have the chance to climb aboard some of the planes too! It was a terrific experience! Mrs Anthea Moro | Year 4 Teacher

Hop On Hop Off Tour As part of our ‘Local History’ unit of work 2T went on a ‘Hop On Hop Off’ excursion of Thebarton and Mile‐End. We walked to the Workmen’s Co ages in Rose Street. The children learnt that the co ages were built to provide low cost housing for working families. Now they are heritage listed!! We got to visit ‘Thomas Hardy Winery’ which was built in 1893 and is now Temple Chris an College. We then went on to visit the ‘Headmaster’s Co age’ which is situated on the corner of Henley Beach Road and South Road. The children learnt that at one stage The‐barton Primary School once had 1,170 students!! The highlight of our tour was the Thebarton Theatre! The children were so excited to go on stage, sit in the dressing room and on the leather couches, look at the honour rolls and go into the old council chambers. All the children in 2T thoroughly enjoyed the tour!
