Tisha B’Av - Too Much Bad Stuff!

A fter the Churban Bais HaMikdash, the Jewish people were so

distraught that many people refused to eat meat or drink

wine. They could not bear to eat meat or drink wine because

meat had formerly been brought on the altar, and wine had been poured

as libations.

"How can you eat bread since there are no longer any meal offerings?"

asked R. Yehoshua.

"In that case we will only eat fruit!" they replied.

"Fruits were also brought as bikurim." responded R. Yehoshua

"We will eat other fruits." they answered.

"How can drink water since it was poured on the altar?” asked R. Yehosh-

ua.

At this point they conceded. R. Yehoshua continued to explain:

"Not to mourn the Bais HaMikdash we cannot do, since Chazal enacted

decrees of mourning. To mourn too much we cannot do either because

we do not decree on the public things which they cannot live by. There-

fore let us adhere to what Chazal decreed. Since churban bayis no facet
