It was the year that CSA Health and Human Services (CSA-HHS) was established. CSA- HHS has grown and changed over the years but its vision remains constant, namely, 'To develop, promote, and manage the health and other human services operations of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine and to ensure the integration of the CSA philosophy in the spon- sored institutions and organizations" (Vision Statement). Today, as a new decade begins, Sister Mary Patricia's tireless dedication to CSA-HHS continues in the role of Chairperson of the Board of Trustees and the Director of Mission and Sponsorship Services. In 1989, she transferred the President's reins to Mr. Peter Reibold and, together, in a model of "shared leadership" they direct the corporate members into the future. The challenge of this leadership team is to broaden the scope of CSA-HHS beyond the facilities currently sponsored by the congregation. Formation of the CSA Health Network which combined St. Vincent Charity Hospital and St. John West Shore is an example cited by Mr. Reibold for integrat- ing operations, sharing services and providing cost-effective quality care to enable develop- ment and delivery of a broader range of services. for the mission of bringing God's love to thoseshe serves describe Sister Kathleen Barneswho, for the past seven years, has been sharingher gifts with the people in Columbia, SouthCarolina, as a staff nurse at ProvidenceHospital.

Sister Kathleen's interest in nursing sprangfrom her experience as a patient in a hospitalduring her high school years. She observed thededication of one of the nurses caring for herand it led her to think of following that

the street from Providence Hospital. In addition, she teaches reading twice a week throughProject Learn. Although her time for hobbies islimited, she does enjoy gardening and walking.

Sister has found great satisfaction in herwork because of the opportunity provided toboth help patients regain their strength and togrow in their awareness of God's love for them. She believes strongly in the mission of people offaith to reveal God's love to others.

In reviewing her experience with the peoplein the South, Sister observes: "I find them

ardent in their belief and relianceon God for their strength. Iseldom see racial or religiousprejudice in the patients whocome to Providence Hospitaland because of the hospital'soutstanding cardiovascularservices, people come from allareas of South Carolina."

The Sisters of Charity of St.Augustine are proud of the dedi-cation and witness of SisterKathleen in her ministry to thepeople of Columbia. In hersensitivity to the needs of others, she tries diligently to live out thecommunity's motto: "In AllThings Charity."

profession. Eventually, she thought of totallydedicating her life to God through her work as anurse and this led her to the Sisters of Charityof St. Augustine where she has been a memberof the Community for 37 years.

Growing up in a family of seven children, she learned early in life to share with others.Today she continues to share by participating inseveral outreach ministries while working thenight shift as assistant director and nurse on amedical unit at Providence Hospital. Working atnight has enabled Sister to volunteer her ser-vices during the day in several areas.

Sister Kathleen has joined Palmetta AIDSLife Support (PALSS), a buddy program thatassists persons living with the difficult and dis-abling disease. Each volunteer is responsibleto contact a designated AIDS victim and giveweekly moral support. Sister also volunteers asa nurse in the Free Medical Clinic located across

Home Away from HomeMarcelline Hall is "a home away

from home" to those special peoplewho need hospitality when a familymember is seriously ill at St. VincentCharity Hospital and Health Center.

Sister Maura Hannam initiatedthis outreach program in 1965 whenshe observed a need for overnightaccommodations for family membersof patients. She arranged for therenting of two suites in LupicaTowers across the street from thehospital. Later six rooms in theSchool of Nursing became availableand, finally, an entire floor consistingof twenty rooms, a suite, a lounge,a kitchenette and laundry facilitiesopened. This area has been namedMarcelline Hall in honor of SisterMarcelline Monnot, a member of thecommunity from 1887 to 1949 andsuperintendent of nurses at St.Vincent Charity Hospital for 27 years.

Visitors are informed of the avail-ability of Marcelline Hall through theadmitting office, doctors and sisters.During 1989, 2,500 guests usedthese accommodations and approxi-mately 3,700 in 1990. Relatives ofpatients have come from the Cleve-land area and neighboring cities andstates as well as from abroad. Those

who have stayed in Marcelline Hallhave commented on the excellentservice, the level of comfort andsafety and the peaceful and homelikeatmosphere. One of the specialadvantages they realize is mutualsupport from one another in time ofcrisis.

Reflections

Sr. Joan Gallagher

As Sisters of Charity of St.Augustine (CSA's), we believe thatthe healing ministry of Jesus isfocused on people, particularly thosewho are spiritually, socially, psycho-logically, physically or materiallyneglected in any way. St. Iranaeus,an early Church father, taught that"the glory of God is human beingsfully alive." In 1939 CSA recognizedthat the addicted person is amongthose who are not "fully alive" andadmitted the first patient with thediagnosis of alcoholism to St.Thomas Hospital in Akron, Ohio. This was a pioneer approach to theproblem and it told the medical andcivic community that chemical addic-tion was a disease which neededtreatment.

Alcoholics Anonymous, founded in1935, became a model for hundredsof support groups all over the world.

CSA was involved in the founding ofthis organization in the person ofSister Ignatia Gavin. The 12 StepProgram demonstrated to the worldthat growth toward human wholenessand maturity and spiritual journeysare intertwined. In the CSASponsorship Statement, we write,"In any illness or disorder, one'swhole being is affected ... [thus] thetreatment plan respects the person'semotional well-being and religiousbeliefs."

Earlier in our history, The Sisters ofCharity of St. Augustine were at theforefront of mental health care when,in 1929, a psychiatric departmentwas opened at Mercy Hospital inCanton, Ohio . . . a hospital spon-sored by CSA. This was the thirdsuch unit to be established in thecountry. CSA has continued to de-velop mental health services whichtoday include a full continuum of bothoutpatient and inpatient programs.Traditional adult psychiatric care re-mains a core program along with spe-cialized units dedicated to adolescentpsychiatry and chemical dependencyprograms.

What does the future hold as wedeepen our understanding of the con-cept that the journey to wholenessand holiness are basically one? As

women religious, we believe that theGospel of Jesus becomes more rele-vant as society becomes more violentand dysfunctional. In the future, out-patient services of our hospitals mayinclude weekend retreats for care-givers, days of prayer for medicalpersonnel and spiritual directionas part of employee assistance pro-grams. We see the growing needfor strong religious beliefs and an in-tegrated value system in the ministryof healing.

We, The Sisters of Charity of St.Augustine, have committed ourselvesto personal growth in maturity andholiness and thus are striving to be-come the persons God created us tobe as we reach out in service to theneeds of others.

In Memory Of. . .Please remember in your prayers thefollowing Sisters of Charity of St. Augustinewho died since July 1,1990...
