COMENIUS PROJECT

PROLOGUE

The idea of a Common Project between schools of different countries was not new There was already a relationship between the Greek and the Spanish school and successful eTwinning Projects had been developed The decisive moment came when another partner was found in another school and an association was formally created in the context of an ambitious Comenius Project called ldquoSharing Past Present and Futurerdquo The driving force which set all going was the wish and the need to know more about Europe to meet people and to make friends The project was the means to get into contact to work together and learn from each other In class the students guided by their teachers developed interesting contributions to the project and shared the results with their friends abroad The quality of these digital products speak for the participantsrsquo high motivation The visits were not an additional or extra activity but an integral part of the project In the visits students teachers and parents made the experience of meeting people from abroad with different cultural backgrounds Every visit was a memorable event When the students came back home from their trip they felt very enthusiastic and made everybody else interested in the foreign country Making friends abroad is like constructing bridges Learning a language is like growing into another culture To forget about prejudices to be open-minded is perhaps the most precious human attitude to our fellow being

For the first time our school organized a race in which the participants had to deposit some money as a kind of donation The money collected was donated to the UNICEF and in this way our school has become a Defender of Childrenrsquos Rights

In our wiki e-platform students and teachers uploaded all the above mentioned digital products of their collaboration and posted their discussions while getting familiarised with web 20 tools that will certainly use in the future

It was in 2009 in a small German town near Duumlsseldorf Ratingen when a group of teachers from different countries with different cultural backgrounds but with the same vision for the education have met in order to discuss and put the pillars on a common new born project A project that would change the everyday routine of these 3 schools for the next 2 years would change the things we all knew- till this day ndashabout these 3 countries A project that would make us realize how much in common we share despite our differences because we do ldquoShare Past Present and Futurerdquo These two years have passed so quickly have offered us experiences made us come closer not only with the partnersrsquo schools and their culture but also with each other in our own schools separately Teachers and students were working together to create prepare share travel visit host The experience smashing for both teachers and students The collaboration touching in any aspect After all this time as I am looking back having focused on our expectations from this Project I believe we should be satisfied that our students have improved their competence in ICT skills and English as it was the language of communication They have also improved their social skills and have gained several experiences enjoying themselves at the same time School has discovered a different way to teach to create interest for other countries and cultures and eventually to enhance responsibility

Teachers themselves had the opportunity to exchange practices and ideas find out aspects in their pedagogical and educational procedures to be improved We strongly believe that through this Project we have offered our students not only a nice experience but friendship and memories At last I would like to give my special thanks to all the families from the three countries that gave a warm hospitality to our students and made them feel at home Thanks to all the students who participated in this project and most of the times they worked really hard Thanks to all the colleagues without whose collaboration support and offer nothing would have come to a successful ending Thanks to Joseacute Luis Gordillo Nevado teacher of ICT in Geacutevora School for the great effort he made to keep every digital product in the right place at the right time being always there when I needed him Thanks to Manuel Gonzaacutelez Moreno Director of IESO de Geacutevora for being the initiator of this great eight year collaboration between our schools Thanks to the directors of our School Angeliki Leventi and Panagiotis Liakeas whose vision for education and especially for our school itself always inspires us and gives us the scaffolding we need to move on and try innovations with beneficial results for everyone Thanks to Projectrsquos coordinator Willi Breuer whose effectiveness had provided us the comfort we needed to know that eventually everything would have been done in the way we had planned This Project was the ldquoIthacardquo which offered us the journey I hope that everyone has enjoyed the experience
