Dear Sheldon Woods Families,
Winter has been quite an ordeal this year, and as most of you know, West Ottawa has had seven snow days as of this writing. Six of those will be forgiven by the state, but we need to make up the instructional time for the 7th. Here's how that will work:
HS and MS: no days or time needs to be added as we had enough cushion built into both to cover one more day's instructional time.
Elementary: At Sheldon Woods, we can add 7 minutes to the end of the day to make up the time. Our new dismissal time will be 4:00 p.m. We will begin this on Monday, March 9, 2015. This will prevent us from needing to run school on Mon-day June 8, 2015 and allow us to finish the year's student days on Friday, June 5, 2015 as originally planned, provided we don't run into additional snow days.
This seven minute change comes with short notice, but in order to take advantage of as many days as possible and keep the added minutes low, we need to begin the change right away.
Thank-you, Karen Abraham

GEMS FROM THE GYM - Mrs. Jill Scholten This week, in Physical Wellness, students began to learn about and play the sport of vol-leyball. Students in grades 2-5 will be specifically working on three skills during this unit: serving, setting and bumping.
So, what do you know about the sport of volleyball?
Did you know that when volleyball was first invented, it was much different from the game today? You could have as many players as you wanted on each team. There were nine innings per game, with three outs per inning. There was also no limit on the number of hits of the ball on each side of the court.
Here are the basic rules of volleyball today-
Volleyball is played by two teams of six players on a court divided by a net. The object of the game is to send the ball over the net so that the opposing team cannot return the ball. Each team has three hits to attempt to return the ball. The ball is put in play by a serve that is hit by the server over the net to the opponent. When the receiving team wins a volley, it gains the right to serve, and the players rotate one position clockwise. When the serving teamwins a volley, it wins a point and the right to continue serv-ing. The ball must clear the net on a serve. A game is played to 21 points or some other agreed upon number. The team that wins the best two out of three games wins the match.
Terms and Lingo: Ace- When the ball is served to the other team and no one touches it.
Sideout - When the team that served the ball makes a mistake, causing the ball to go to the other team.
Roof - When a player jumps above the height of the net and blocks the ball.
Dig - When a player makes a save from a very difficult spike.
Kill - When a team spikes the ball and it ends in either a point or a sideout.

Tulip Time! Will your child be marching in the Kinderparade?
Tulip Time is right around the corner! First through fifth grade students, and adult vol-unteers, are invited to march in the Tulip Time Kinderparade, but are required to wear a Dutch costume. (Kindergarten students do not march unless they are accom-panied by a parent volunteer supervisor) Thursday, May 7th, is this year’s date for the Tulip Time Kinderparade. Please be sure to see the attached flyer from the Holland Area Newcomers regarding the 64th Annual Dutch Costume Resale on Tuesday, March 10! If your student would like to march in the Kinderparade, this is a GREAT place to find a costume! Check it out!!
