BORN to FLY

Chris Kielmeyer is a retired elementary school teacher from northern Virginia who landed in about the best spot she can imagine: the butterfly aviary at the Calusa Nature Center.

“I always loved teaching science,” Kielmeyer said, as the life cycle of the butterfly played out in every direction on a sunny but not-so-hot afternoon at the Fort Myers attraction. She began as a volunteer when she moved to Fort Myers in 2008 and now tends the beautiful and delicate Gulf fritillaries, monarchs, orange- barred sulphur butterflies and others in residence at the center on Ortiz Avenue. This month, the zebra longwings should be back and Kielmeyer will usher a few into the enclosure.

At times, the population dips – which is inevitable, since adult butterflies have short

lives, from two weeks to a month on average. When residents become sparse, Kielmeyer walks the nature center grounds looking for leaves with eggs or caterpillars and sometimes nets adults for rehoming to her domain.

And in a sustainability arrangement, Hickory Hammock Tree Farm in Fort Myers turns its annoyances into a joy for the nature center’s habitat. When the caterpillars of the swallowtail butterfly start eating too many of the leaves of the nursery’s plants, they’re evicted and sent to live with Kielmeyer’s crew.

Being surrounded by this quiet life cycle of egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and adult butterfly feels like standing meditation, so it wasn’t surprising when Kielmeyer said that people often tell her they believe butterfly sightings have spiritual meaning.

Flighty about foodLike people, caterpillars have their favorite foods. But caterpillars are far more predictable than humans. In fact, they are so predictable that the only comparable situation would be, say, if everybody born with brown hair liked sweet potatoes best and olive-skinned people pretty much lived on tilapia. Or some other food.

At the Calusa Nature Center, butterfly expert Chris Kielmeyer knows what her charges want to eat.

Monarch caterpillars want tropical milkweed.

Also called silkweed and other names, it’s an annual up north and a perennial in the south. It provides food for the monarch caterpillars and nectar for the adult butterflies.

The Gulf fritillary caterpillar yearns for the passion vine. According to legend, early missionaries from South America to Mexico believed that several parts of the plant, including the petals, rays, and sepals, symbolized features of the suffering and death of Christ and used it in their teaching.

The orange-barred sulphur butterfly likes the cassia, or senna plant. By many accounts this butterfly is a newcomer to the United States, showing up here in the 1920s.

Once the caterpillars grow up and become butterflies, they’ll nectar on many different flowering plants.

All of the Calusa Nature Center butterflies’ favorite foods grow on the grounds. When Kielmeyer notices the plant supply getting low, she simply goes on a hike and scouts out what her charges need.

has died and a butterfly will come and land on them and they feel like it’s a sign,” she said.

It’s easy to imagine mystical associations with creatures that have such interesting life stages. For instance, the monarch, which is abundant in Southwest Florida, in the caterpillar phase sheds its skin five times. That last time, the chrysalis appears and inside it the caterpillar “dissolves into liquid moosh,” Kielmeyer explained. But in that goop is a cell that grows into a butterfly. She has often watched for about five minutes as the chrysalis cracks and the butterfly unfurls, then dries its wings before flying out to explore its home.

According to a Nature documentary airing this month, butterflies have existed on this planet for more than 50 million years and today there are nearly 20,000 known species. We’re not sure what the title means – Sex, Lies and Butterflies – but we’ll be watching to find out.

WGCU was full of kids and characters recently at a day that was all about youth. At Kids Day on Saturday, Feb.

24, about 500 parents and children met their heroes – PBS title characters of Peg + Cat, Jet Propulsion from Ready Jet Go! and Whyatt Beanstalk of Super Why – plus local police officers and firefighters. And all of them were greeted like rock stars.

The Lee County Library was on hand to sign kids up for library cards. The Lee County Sheriff’s Department fingerprinted kids at no charge. Kids could check out a virtual reality simulation brought by IMAG History & Science Center and make leaf prints with Artis-Naples. The San Carlos Fire Department gave out fire hats. The Conservancy of Southwest Florida taught kids about animal habitats. C’mon brought the Keva Blocks.

It all took place inside the Myra Janco Daniels Public Media Center, where kids could even get before the cameras in our studio. And all of it was free. Here are a few scenes from a memorable day. And a big thank you to our volunteers! WGCU General Manager Rick Johnson with Peg and Cat.

It went something like this … The year is 1999. I am less than 4 feet tall,

our telephone at home is attached to the wall with a cord, and I am at the library. Before me are rows upon rows of VHS tapes along shelves that tower up to twice my height. My mother has told me that I may choose two tapes to take home.

I sort through the tapes for kids along the bottom row, discarding the ones I consider to be “for babies,” which turn out to be quite a few since I consider myself “a big boy.” I flip through the tapes until I reach several in a row about a man called Bill Nye the Science Guy.

I had seen this science guy before on my channel-surfing adventures. While flipping through the boring adult channels to reach my beloved Nickelodeon, I had caught glimpses of this science guy gesturing wildly and talking about something called physics before I resumed my quest for cartoons.

Of course these videos about science I’m looking at sound like those boring documentary shows my parents would watch so I continue on my search until I see one of the Bill Nye tapes with a picture of the scientist riding a dinosaur. I look down at the Jurassic Park shirt I am wearing and back to the tape and smile. Just about anything having to do with the prehistoric creatures has me frothing at the mouth so I decide to give the science guy a chance.

Once home I pop the tape in and punch the play button with a satisfying click. I am greeted with not a happy-go-lucky jingle but with a theme song that I can’t help but join in with, chanting “Bill Bill Bill Bill Bill!” Somehow, through a combination

of eclectic sound effects, zany humor, and Bill Nye’s limitless energy in explaining all things scientific, I discover that science could actually be cool. Maybe I could actually like science.

So upon my next visit to the local library I get the next tape in the series and then another after that. Soon enough I am hooked and I am not alone.

Today, my entire generation cannot help but chant Bill’s name with the same zealous fervor as our 8-year-old selves. When I was in college at Florida State University, Bill Nye came to speak. Literally thousands of college students lined up as early as noon to see Bill Nye at 7 p.m. Every so often during that wait, someone started up a Bill chant and the results were incredible.

Thousands of college students took the time to line up for hours to see a beloved children’s educational science show host and chant his name like he had dropped the hottest hip-hop album of the year.

Bill Nye the Science Guy wasn’t the first show that managed to make science fun but it was the first for me to make science cool. Sure, there were other educational shows like The Magic School Bus and Zoboomafoo but they didn’t do what Bill did and that is, to make me see that there’s science everywhere. That science was not only beakers and lab coats but also the pursuit of understanding via systematic study of the structure and behavior of pretty much anything.

The fact that Bill Nye the Science Guy is still changing the world one science fact at a time is fantastic. So thank you, science guy, for reminding us that science does, most assuredly, rule.

Bill Nye helped me actually like science

The Nye we never knewComing to PBS this month is Bill Nye: Science Guy, a documentary falling under the POV umbrella and featuring the former kids’ show host.He has taken off his lab coat and gotten serious, taking on what he terms the “anti-science movement” advanced mainly by climate-change skeptics and creationists. The documentary shows how Nye is approaching education from a different viewpoint now, one that some critics have derided as political.“If we raise a generation of kids that can’t think critically, can’t think scientifically, we are headed for trouble,” he has said. “As a science educator, I am really more serious about it than ever. These people who are denying science, denying evolution, denying the efficacy of vaccinations and especially denying human-caused climate change—we just can’t have this. We’ve got to fight this fight. I’ve got to fight this fight.”Press materials for the show describe it “an absorbing, charming portrait of a man and his not-so-modest mission to educate and change the world.”We’re promised insight into his family and romantic life, too.

Gail South wants to know: What is the purpose of the blue lights on top of traffic signals at intersections? You might see them in Lee County, but not Collier, where they were installed but didn’t last very long. Proponents say they increase safety; opponents take issue with this use of technology. Tune in to find out more. Jim Goin of the WGCU staff produced this short segment.

BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL?

W hether they’re about long-lost flowers or longsuffering drivers, Southwest Floridians have a lot of questions. And that’s good. Because reporters at WGCU like nothing better than digging –

or hitting the road – for answers.

The project we began some months ago, Curious Gulf Coast, continues this month to illumi-nate some of the issues that baffle WGCU viewers and listeners, such as the purpose of those blue lights on traffic signals.

Another timely issue has to do with municipal incorporation. As residents of Pine Island talk about incorporating, K.D. Adolphson wondered what the advantages and disadvantages were to taking that step. How does it affect allocation of resources, taxes, government? The last community to seek incor-

poration, and getting overwhelm-ing approval of residents at the polls to do so, was Estero. It’s now been incorporated for three years.

As part of the Curious Gulf Coast show on April 26, freelance producer Melanie Pefinis takes on this issue by looking at communities that are incorporated and others that are unincorporated in Southwest Florida and what each means to the daily lives of citizens.

This episode of Curious Gulf Coast takes on four more relevant local questions:

Long time passing … For 80 years, starting in the late 1920s, Lee County earned a reputation as Gladiolus Capital of the World. In its heyday, more than 2,000 acres of the flowers covered land from Iona to Cape Coral. By 2009, the fields had disappeared. How did gladiolus farming get started in Lee County? And more to the point, what happened to them? Stephanie Smith wanted to know, and freelance producer Chelle Walton tackles this issue.

Linda Craig heard about an insurance survey that labeled Southwest Florida drivers the worst of the worst. Freelance producer Jennifer Fairfield-Williams finds out more about this embarrassing designation. Here at Expressions, we can’t wait to find out the truth, because it seems that more than one survey has revealed that the worst drivers are in Florida – including one survey amusingly named SmartAsset.

WHERE HAVEALL THEFLOWERS GONE?

BAD RAP FOR AREA DRIVERS?

We know that the reasons for the term “Florida cracker” have been bandied about for eons. Jennifer Robert wanted a final answer. The man up to the task is producer Jim Goin at WGCU. Is it about the cowboys or not?

WGCU’s Tara Calligan, social media coordinator, and Anna Bejerano, digital media specialist, had their sights set on participating in the PBS Kids Rapid Innovation Lab at PBS TechCon in Las Vegas this month. To get there, they had to apply for a Digital Innovation Grant and explain how they were working in digitally innovative ways.

“Anna and I took a big risk and decided to make a video submission … and that risk was rewarded,” Calligan said. They received the grant, and will be presenting some of their ideas and learning from others about PBS Kids and its related digital projects.

Goodbye, Expressions

“To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” Winston Churchill made those words famous when the world was on the precipice of great change. While we are far from perfect, the changes we are making at WGCU will improve our service and better meet the needs of our members in all the communities we reach with our broadcast and online program streams.

Seventeen years ago, WGCU published its first issue of Expressions magazine. The goal of the magazine was to provide members with a monthly guide to TV and radio programming and enhance our readers’ understanding of the Southwest Florida community. Since that first issue in fall 2000, we have seen a steady increase in the costs of producing and mailing Expressions. At the same time, we have witnessed tremendous growth in the consumer’s use of digital technology to get the news, find TV schedules and learn about our community.

It has and continues to be very important to WGCU to be good stewards of your generous contributions to public media in Southwest Florida. With this rapidly changing media landscape and the increase in magazine production costs, we have come to the difficult decision that to continue to publish a monthly magazine is not cost effective. The June issue of WGCU’s Expressions magazine will be the last.

In the months to come we will be happy to discuss alternative ways for you to get our TV programming information. If you would like to discuss this, please call Jessica Trueblood at 239.590.2507 or email [email protected]. Also, we encourage you to sign up for our e-newsletter at wgcu.org. It is filled with information about upcoming WGCU events, as well as highlights from TV and radio programming.

We are committed to providing Southwest Florida with the best in TV and radio programming and to find perfect ways to engage with you. At the heart of our desire to change and improve is our appreciation for your loyalty and support.

Biography Through Music, hosted by Mike Kiniry. Three Song Stories is an exploration of the power music has to connect us to times, places, people, and emotions from our lives. The show brings out the guests’ personalities, and personal histories, by mining the connections music has made during their lifetimes. It’s also a chance to sit back and listen to the eclectic mix of songs the guests have chosen for their ultimate musical memory short list.

Fort Myers mom knows what the world needs nowIt started last summer with a mom,

a dad and three girls – a first-grader, a 3-year-old and an 8-month-old.

The family was fine. “But we were feeling a lot of anxiety in the world, a rise in disharmony among people,” Cheyenne Hancock recalled. “So my husband said, ‘Let’s start watching some Mister Rogers.’ And we’d all watch some episodes before bedtime.”

Fred Rogers’ soothing voice and message of everyone being special and everyone being important to someone seemed to be just what they needed.

Cheyenne grew up in Orlando in the ’80s, her husband on the border of Alabama and Mississippi in the ’70s, and both remembered being comforted and enlightened by Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood as children.

So when the world seemed to be spinning out of control, the Hancocks – who now live in Fort Myers – turned to a familiar face and voice to help their children, and them.

It wasn’t the first time Mister Rogers had come up lately.

“I was telling another friend that I was a wreck,” Hancock said. “And he said, ‘You really need to fire up some Mister Rogers.’”

She listened, and has now passed on that suggestion to another friend.

“There needs to be more of his message

now,” Hancock said. “Like the message that people look and act at each other through a lens of kindness, not by what political color you fall in or the color you are.”

Hancock was surprised to find Mister Rogers back in her life but pleased, too. She emailed us a letter:

I turned on PBS this morning so my daughter could watch PBS Kids while I could take care of some work that came up this morning. I was delighted to see you were airing a rerun episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood – the episode that spoke about building bridges in the literal sense but no doubt also in the figurative sense in our interpersonal relationships as well. I’m sending a quick note to say Thank You! We need more positivity in our world; the very same ripples of kindness and acceptance Mister Rogers brought to us back when he was alive. More, please! This is the right direction! While I really do love the message and teaching of emotional intelligence that Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood provides, nothing comes close to the soothing voice and feelings of peace that come from listening to Mister Rogers. Bravo!

Bravo to you, too, Cheyenne.

See what’s cooking and growing with P. Allen SmithMark a calendar for April 14 and spend a day with P. Allen Smith.

On the Create channel all morning and most of the afternoon, P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home will hop, skip and jump to several states and out of the country as well, showing viewers inspiring ways to cook, garden and serve a dinner party.

Among the destinations:

• The late 18th century town of Salem, N. C. Learn how many of the same practices and principles in this Moravian community can be utilized in today’s modern backyard gardens.

• Charleston, S.C., for an exploration of the food and fellowship of one of the country’s oldest cities.

• Holland, Mich., for that city’s annual Tulip Time Festival.

• Pura Vida, Costa Rica, one of the five Blue Zones in the world, to see if there really is a secret to longevity there.

• Natchez, Miss., the oldest city on the Mississippi River, to explore the cuisine and culture of a city where the river is wide and the history is deep.

• And in your own backyard, you’ll see how you can plant a garden space and cultivate herbs, not only for food but drinks, too.
