    HESTORY OF WARREN COUNTY.

    a sL i d i o c a s oc ie t i e s a i jd c h u r c h e s .

The Friends were the first to organize into a society. In 1800, EzokielCleaver, with others, came with their families from Virginia to Red Stone, nowBrownsville in Pennsylvania, and the families remained there, and Cleaver

Tand perhaps some others)came to Waynesville and erecteda large log houseon the east corner of Miami and Third streets, resting on large logs cut andplacedin the groundendway and returnedtotheir families In the springof1801. CU-avormoved here. . t t? ji

Previous to 1803, the Friends organized a society, a committee of hriendscomingfrom Red Stone to sit with them, aswas then and I believestdlcustom. After

    theorganization,meetingsfor

    worshipwere held

at the different family residencesuntil 1805, when they built a substantial log mooting-house. wherethe house of the Orthodox Friends now is.S David Brownwas appointeda committeeto build the house. The records

of the Friends show that he built it. put in a stove and fenced in the graveyard, and receivedas a compensationfor building and completing the house,155.88; thestove, 35.93, and for fencing in the graveyard, 19.

The Friends got the title to their grounds in 1808. David Pugh, Benjamin Evans Isaac Mills, David Horner, SamuelTest and Benjamin Hopkins, were made trustees in the deed. A committeewas appointedto examine thetitle, consistingof Joel Wright.JosephCanby, Mordecai Walker,JolmHames,Abijah O Neall. Isaac Wardand George0. Ward. nn < .M In May. 1811,they determined to build a brickmeeting-house,lOxnOfeet,one story, and appointedAsherBrown and Joseph Evans, managers, and, inAugustfollowingconsideredthe proprietyof buildingtwo stories, and Jona-than Crispinwas appointed an additionalmanager. In February,1812,reportedexpenseswere 1,195.13, and probablyexpense, to complete lowerstoryfor use, 400. ^ + irg In May 1812, Noah Hainos, Chairmanof the committee, reported totalexpenses, 1,278.45. a .r w u

In 1818, a committeewas appointed todrafta plan and finish the upperpart of the house, corisistingof John Stubbs,Levi Cook JosephEvans, Ttymga_Sherwood.AsherBrown, John Satterthwaiteand Isaac Stubbs, which they^did

aFa cost of about 250, making a total cost of a little more than 1,500.David Evans and wife were the first couple married there.

In the year 1870, the housewasrepairedand remodeled, leavingbut littleof the original architectureand givingit the appearanceof a one-ahirybuilding, witha small galleryon the east side,at an expenseof over 2,000.

In a divisionof the society in about 1828, the orthodoxbranch, which wasin the minoritywithdrewand they r^aired the old log house, whichwas badlyrotted, where they worshipeduntil 1835or 1830, when the old log housewastaken down and the present structure erected. The Friends Graveyard ontheir premisesin Waynesvillewas the firstregulargraveyardin the township.

A log meeting-housewaserectedby the Baptistson the farm ofJane Carman, on the road from here to Dayton,at an early day. I have been informedabout the year 1814. j t i. tt-

A freemeeting-housewasbuiltonthe farm nowownedbyRev. John Hisey,in east Wayne Township,in 1817, by subscription. As I have a copyof saidsubscriptionpaper, I here give it, with the originalorthography:

    WASHINGTON TO W N S H I P y

It will not be improper to state in this place that the Flat Fork at thisfarm was foi*mcrly spamied by a rude bridge more than twenty rods long, withpuncheon floor. Some years after, it was replaced by another. 135 feet inlength, by Samuel Louden and John L. Williams, at the expense of the county. At present,a bridge of twenty-feet span answers all purposes and the land iscultivated up to i t where water oncestood two or three feet or more in depth. This will suffice for the Springhill sett lement

W e will no w r etu rn to th e Mather se t t lement on th e river then re turn eastward along the Wilmington road. The Mather family have removed to variousparts, one son, Joseph, living on the Wilmington road, in Clinton County.George Zentmire purchaseda farm on the river below Freeport, where ho dif^May 20, 1836; his wife, Elizabeth Dunn, died February 18, 1S54. Their family, four sous andfour daughters, are seatterxl, one son, Kov. Samnel Zeritrnire.living at Morrow. The river at this time was amply stocked with tish; brushdrags were made to be used as seines, and gi eat quantities were obtained. Fifteen or more deer in one herd was a common sight. Many of the oldes t inhabitants assertwith great earnestness, that a light with Indians on the Zentmire farm, and also a short distance above Preeport, took place some timeprevious to the firet settlement, but no direct evidence of such events can beobtained. On the hill east of the river. J oe l Drake settled, in 1815. whereJohn Wilkerson now lives; he was from Southampton County, Va., and was asoldier of th Revolution, taking part at Yorktown and witnessed the surrenderof Comwallis; he and his brother, Jordan Drake, left Virginia in 1807. andencountered a terrible tornado after crossing the Ohio. They arrived at Anderson s Fork they supposed at the time , in Clinton County, now Snowhill; butmilk sickness prevailing, they disposed of their property and removed to Warren County and settled on the head of Olive Branch in 1815, Jordan Drakesettling near by where Samuel Craig now lives. Jordan Drake raised a largefamily, his daughter in law, ilrs. John W. Drake, and his grandson, Henry Drake, remaining in this township. Joel Drake was an active and influentialmember of the Methodist Episcopal Chorch; his death occurred in 1841.

About th e same t ime, 1815, Jonathan Friar William Friar an d ThomasFriar settled in the vicinity, and, not long after, Asa Barge, John Hall, AdamBarnes and McFall; and farther east, in 1814, William Chenoweth settled where Amos Warwick now lives. On the oppos ite s ide of the road JohuWeeks settled, in 1818, on part of Chenoweth s land, now owned by the heirsof Wil liam Wilson and George H. Thomas.

Who first settled where David Farris no w lives, I am not informed; he isth e son of David Farris, who set tled in 1808 in the eastern part of th e township, and moved to the present site in 1828, opening a large farm;- he is nowin his eighty-third year, hale and hearty.

David Roberteon settled prior to Farris on the farm now occupied by hisson, Ezra Robertson. Henry and Jonathan Sherwood moved to the townshipin iSSS; Samuel PrenclTBettled in 2820, and built a stone house, in l83lsince owned by Nathan Clark, now by JohnVan Horn. William Mur
