A Prayer to St. Martin De Porres

o you Saint Martin de Porres we lift up our hearts lled with serene condence and devotion. Mindful of your unbounded and helpful charity to all levels of society and also of your meekness and humility of heart, we oer our petitions to you. Pour out upon our families the precious gifts of your solicitous and generous intercession; show to the people of every race and every color the paths of unity and of justice; implore from our Father in heaven the coming of his kingdom, so that through mutual benevolence in God men and women may increase in the fruits of grace and merit the rewards of eternal life. Amen.

artin was born at Lima in Peru in the year 1579. His father was a Spanish knight and his mother was a black slave who had been set free. When he was just ten years old, Martin was placed with a surgeon to learn about the medical eld and earn his living. He felt great joy while helping the sick. He also learned how to cure many diseases according to the practices of those days. Even as a young boy, he spent some time every night in prayer.Martin wanted to give himself to God and asked for admission to a Dominican Convent. Brother Martin soon proved to be a wonderful religious.

Side by side with his daily work in the kitchen, laun-dry and inrmary, Martin’s life reected God’s extraordinary gifts: ecstasies that lifted him into the air; light lling the room where he prayed; bilocation; miraculous knowledge; instantaneous cures; and a remarkable rapport with animals. Martín died of a fever in Lima on November 3, 1639, at the age of nearly 60. Despite his renown throughout Latin America, recognition from the Catholic church was slow to come. In 1837 he was beatied, and his feast day is celebrated on November 3. He was canon-ized as a saint by Pope John XXIII on May 6, 1962, with a contingent of 350 African-American Catholics in attendance. Cardinal Cushing called Martín "a pioneer social worker," and when canonized he was designated the patron saint of universal brotherhood.
