GENERAL COMMUNITY NEWS Citizenship Ceremony – Rev. Lindy Rookyard On Wednesday, 17 May 2017, Rev. Lindy Rookyard participated in an Australian Citizenship Ceremony conducted at the Shire of Kojonup. Lindy originally hails from South Africa and first came to Australia in 2011 before being posted to Kojonup as the parish priest of St Mary’s, Kojonup and St Andrew’s, Katanning by the Bunbury Anglican Parish Diocese. She was supported at the ceremony by a huge turnout of friends from the Kojonup community and surrounds. It was fantastic to see so many there to support Lindy. Many in the Kojonup community know the Reverend via her fortnightly articles in the Kojonup News or through attending church services at St Mary’s. It was great to officially welcome her as an Australian citizen at the ceremony and the Shire congratulates Lindy and wishers her all the best. Sports Complex – Entry Statement Council seeks community feedback on a concept to erect a formal entry statement at the new entrance to the Sports Complex. One of the concepts is to place a formal sign in the top corner of the Swimming Pool fence off Benn Parade and then have a series of interpretative panels along the eastern swimming pool fence that recognises highly regarded sport achievers from Kojonup. Another panel would list those that have been state or national representatives in their chosen sport – effectively an honour board which can have future sports achievers added. Why shouldn’t we as a community recognise and celebrate our past achievers, encourage present participants to strive for excellence and aim high for the future?

As previously stated Council welcomes community input on possible sign design/entry statement concepts as well as names and details of our sport achievers. Please contact or lodge your feedback with the Shire CEO. Stone Axe Pastoral Company “Mathew Walker has moved a step closer to fulfilling plans of building the world’s biggest wagyu cattle herd at Kojonup after securing a cash injection for Stone Axe Pastoral from a private equity firm. Roc Partners, a spin-off of Macquarie Group’s private markets business, has bought a majority shareholding in the business for an undisclosed amount. Roc partner Michael Lukin becomes chairman of Stone Axe, while Mr. Walker remains a director. The investment will help fund Stone Axe’s $100 million program to build its ultra-premium wagyu beef cattle enterprise at the 3000ha Cheviot Hills property near Kojonup. Stone Axe is stockpiling frozen embryos from more than 1000 of its own donor cattle at a vet centre in NSW. The first transplants into donor recipients at Kojonup will take place this spring. Plans include building a feedlot and processing facility at Kojonup, which by 2022 would turn off about 20,000 full blood wagyu annually for markets including China, South-East Asia and the Middle East. The company plans to acquire more land near Kojonup. Mr. Walker’s father, Chris, pioneered the Australian wagyu industry by founding Westholme Wagyu and importing full-blood animals from Japan.” (Extract – The West Australian – Yahoo!7) Local Government Elections Elections will be held 21 October 2017 if nominations received exceed vacant positions available.

We encourage any interested candidates to contact us as information sessions are planned to be conducted in August/September 2017. Please consider nominating for your Council, a role that is challenging, diverse and a rewarding way to give back to your community! Volunteer Awards Council congratulates all nominees and volunteers as your contribution to our community is truly appreciated and never taken for granted. THANK YOU! We’ll see you there at the Volunteer Awards this Sunday at 2:30pm in the Memorial Hall! Community members are reminded that the Shire President is available for appointments Wednesday morning from 10:00am until noon. Please contact Miranda at the Shire Office on (08) 9831 2408. LIBRARY NEWS eSmart Our Library is becoming eSmart. What is eSmart? It is a way to make our library safer for all and also for you at home. You will notice new posters around the library and we will be encouraging all to follow and lead by example. There are some great resources available from Stay Smart Online for National Consumer Fraud Week (15-19 May 2017): https://www.staysmartonline.gov.au/partners/partner-resource-kits/consumer-fraud-awareness-week-kit. Please share this information with your family, friends & neighbours – you never know who may benefit. Volunteers I just want to touch on volunteers – it is that time of year where they are recognised and thanked for their efforts. I have the absolute blessing of having a volunteer at the library within Steve Hatfield. He’s amazing! I appreciate all he does and he supports me in any way he can. He takes the lead with our displays of books, shelving our books, pulling and preparing the exchanges both in & out. Steve chats to our patrons, shares his thoughts on books to read and also serves. He is the king of the Library Stars too. Thank you Steve. Sometimes I forget to say it but you are always appreciated! Once again on Sunday last, I helped with a group of ladies who rallied to make several eskies of sandwiches for Rob to take out to the Kojonup Bushfire Brigade fire fields. Jude, Sandra, Mary, Bec – it is a pleasure to volunteer alongside you all. I’m sure the weary, hungry fire fighters appreciate the sustenance and your time put into providing for them. To all the other ladies who supported this role through summer – thank you also. Play in the Park APEX Park – 10:00am to 12:00pm on Wednesday, 24 May & 28 June.

Storytime Reading starts at 10:30am. Storytime will occur on the following dates: • 2 June • 16 June • 30 June New Reads & DVDs

We enjoyed an evening with Rachael Johns, chatting about her new book (Talk of the Town) and her journey into being published. Many of us went home with a copy of her book too. A great

night was had by all and thanks for coming along. To Ros & Barb: the amazing ladies who cooked for us all – thank you!

Attendees listen attentively as Rachael discusses her new book: “Talk of the Town”.

Talk of the Town – Rachael Johns. Lawson Cooper-Jones has two priorities in life – his son, Ned and the survival of the dairy farm that has been in his family for generations. Despite the best efforts of the town

matchmakers and the determined pursuit of local girl Adeline Walsh, Lawson’s heart belongs still and only, to his late wife. But when a flat tyre strands Lawson and Ned in nearby Rose Hill, he’s surprised to find a woman living

alone in the old general store of the deserted town. Ned immediately forms a bond with the beautiful stranger called Meg and Lawson is surprised to find himself captivated by her too.

Tuesday Tucks Me In: The Loyal Bond Between a Soldier & His Service Dog – Fmr. Capt. Luis Montalvan. As narrated by Tuesday, ‘Tuesday Tucks Me In’ is a day in the life of this service dog extraordinaire and tail-

wagging ambassador for all things positive and uplifting in the world. The book takes us through a typical day of adventures starting with Tuesday waking military veteran, Luis Carlos Montalvan, in the morning and greeting him with dog breath in the face and then ending with Tuesday cuddling up to Luis on their bed, the last moment they spend together before sleep.

Supercharged Food for Kids – Lee Holmes. This book will inspire you to create fresh, wholesome and nutrient-rich meals that your children will enjoy again and again, giving them the energy and nourishment they need to thrive. You'll find recipes here

that will please even the pickiest of little eaters! With advice on how to avoid added sugar and processed foods, eating for allergies and intolerances, tips for busy families and even the lowdown on how to sneak superfoods into everyday meals, this book is

full of resources to help establish positive eating habits for your kids that they can maintain for the rest of their lives...

Sisters of the Fire – Kim Wilkins. The battle-scarred warrior princess Bluebell, heir to her father's throne, is rumoured to be unkillable. So when she learns of a sword wrought specifically to slay her by the fearsome raven king, Hakon, she sets out on a journey to find it

before it finds her. The sword is rumoured to be in the possession of one of her four younger sisters. But which one? Scattered as they are across the kingdoms, she sets out on a journey to find them. From wild rocky coastline to granite-topped tors, from bustling harbours to echoing ghost towns, from halls of kings to ancient primal woodlands, this story follows five sisters upon whose actions kingdoms will rise and fall.

Movie – The Light between Oceans. 1926. Tom Sherbourne is a young lighthouse keeper on a remote island off Western Australia. The only inhabitants of Janus Rock, he and his wife Isabel live a quiet life, cocooned from the rest of the world. Then

one April morning a boat washes ashore carrying a dead man and a crying infant and the path of the couple's lives hits an unthinkable crossroads. Only years later do they discover the devastating consequences of the decision they made that day – as the baby's real story unfolds... SPEED DEMONS – Phil & AJ Shephard & the E-Type JAGUAR. KOOKOO THE KOOKABURRA IS COMING! This award winning children’s aboriginal story will be visiting our Kojonup school students later this month. Kookoo Kookaburra tells the tale of a kind and well-loved kookaburra, famous for entertaining bush creatures with his funny stories. Kookoo teaches children about the importance of friendship, respect and kindness in a fun, interactive presentation. Kookoo and his friends will be flying into Kojonup on Tuesday, 30 May as part of the 2017 Country Arts WA Shows on the Go touring circuit as

Council is trying to create stronger networked links in the hope of bringing other cultural events and experiences to town. Heavily subsidised by the Shire, this 50 minute performance will cost only $3 per child and will be performed in the Kojonup District High School’s drama room before an audience of students from Pre-Primary to Year 5. Students from St Bernard’s will also be attending. No doubt it will be a fun morning for all. Serena Jade Community Development Officer

NEW SIGNS FOR MYRTLE BENN FLORA AND FAUNA SANCTUARY The Shire of Kojonup has secured funding through LotteryWest to upgrade and replace signage in the Myrtle Benn Flora and Fauna Sanctuary. The Myrtle Benn Flora and Fauna Sanctuary is one of our most visited Reserves by national and international tourists, especially during the wildflower season. The new signs will add to their appreciation of our beautiful natural environment

and assist them to ‘stay on track’, preserving the flora of the Sanctuary. Jesse Brampton, of Kulbardi Hill Constructing, Albany, has won the contract to design and make the signs bases. Jesse has worked extensively in Western Australia, most notably on the Bibbulmun Track. The Friends of Myrtle Benn group are busy brainstorming names of animals and plants to feature on the information panels and collecting snippets of information from locals about Myrtle Benn’s time in the reserve. If you were lucky enough to have been in one of Myrtle’s classes at the sanctuary, we would love to get a short anecdote or memory from that time to add to the information panels. Please call me on 0428 712 050 or email [email protected] with you anecdotes and memories.
