Rabbi Charles L. Arian 301-869-7699

[email protected]

From the Rabbi’s Study

Dear Friends:

“If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll

wind up someplace else.” So said one of our greatest sages, Reb Yogi of Berra.

Conservative Judaism has long had a problem

identifying what it stands for. Too many of us identify our movement not by what it is but by what it isn’t, namely

that we are “not Orthodox and not Reform.”

That may have been a minor annoyance for most

of our history but now it is a major problem. In one of my recent Friday morning messages I discussed all of the

variations on the theme of “family” which now make up our

congregations and kehillot: single-parent families, blended families, interfaith families, same-sex families, interfaith

families, interracial families, and many families which might fit into more than one of these groups. I have been told on

more than one occasion by members of these families that the label “Conservative” was a turn-off that needed to be

overcome before exploring whether or not our kehilla

might be a good fit for them.

When we think of “Conservative” religion what do we think of? Conservative Christians often believe in biblical

inerrancy, “traditional” gender roles, and so on. If we think

of a Conservative Muslim family, we probably imagine a strongly patriarchal household where the women wear a

hijab and the men make all the decisions. By contrast Con-servative Judaism is actually quite liberal; we have had fe-

male clergy for 30 years and our seminaries have been

ordaining “out” LGBT rabbis and cantors for over a decade.

Hi –

We had a wonderful Simchah Shabbat this month. We got to use three Sifrey Torahs, a rare thing. Rabbi Arian did beautifully, keeping us posted about what was going on as we read from each Torah. As always, his Torah introduc-tions, Haftorah introduction and Drash were well worth lis-tening to. Chazzan Komrad also had her work cut out for her, it being Chanukah, Rosh Chodesh, and Shabbat. Need-less to say, she was up for the occasion, and we were blessed with a beautiful service.

Our recent Kiddush Konversation, a short class after Kiddush on Shabbat, was absolutely fascinating. Rabbi Arian dis-cussed the current movement in the Orthodox community regarding the ordaining of female Rabbis. He compared it with what occurred in the Conservative movement, and as a special treat, Chazzan Komrad was there to fill us in regard-ing the Conservative movement’s process toward accepting female Chazzanot as well. I really hope we see her at more of our Kiddush Konversations; she always adds so much!

We also had the opportunity to formally thank Rabbi Raph-ael for stepping up and filling in for Rabbi Arian during Rabbi Arian’s illness this summer. I had the delightful task to pre-sent Rabbi Raphael with a “Bar Mitzvah bag” of goodies in-cluding a Certificate of Appreciation (suitable for framing), and a gift certificate to Strathmore. Always a Mensch, he soon sent us a letter of thanks, which read in part:

“Dear Mike, Just a short note of appreciation for the honor, your words, the Kiddush, and the generosity of Kehilat Shalom. …Kehilat Shalom will always be a special place, a spiritual home for me, because of the memories and relationships through 16 wonderful years. A special thank you for the generous gift cer-tificate. It will give me and Diane the opportunity to enjoy some music and entertainment that we almost certainly would not spend the money on, with my “semi-retirement”. I will continue to be around (hopefully) without being asked whenever needed.

Sincerely, Rabbi Mark R. Raphael”

We also had a great Chanukah party. Families brought in and lit their Menorahs together, the kids made their own pizzas and decorated Chanukah cookies. A good time was had by all. Our next round of fun was the Chinese dinner, bowling and ice cream social on the 25th.

To all those who prepared food, served or donated to our 12/25 brunch at the Men’s Shelter on Gude Drive, a big Thank You!

How did our movement come to be known as “Conservative” in the first place? It is a quirk of history -- Con-servative Judaism developed out of Reform Judaism, a proc-ess which took place at different times in both Germany and the United States. In both cases, the leaders of what would become Conservative Judaism agreed with the Reformers that Judaism had to adjust to meet changing times but felt that the pace of change advocated by Reform was too abrupt and not sufficiently respectful of the past. They sought to “conserve” more of the tradition than did the Reformers and thus the name. Rabbi David Wolpe of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles has been the most outspoken advocate of a name change. He advocates “Covenantal Judaism” (which has the added benefit of allowing our umbrella organization to retain the initials USCJ). I’d like to share with you an excerpt from a recent in-terview Rabbi Wolpe gave which sums up nicely some of my thoughts as well: Covenantal Judaism. That is our philosophy

and should be our name. Renaming heralds our rejuvenation. We believe in an ongoing dialogue with God. Not everything significant has already been said, nor is the modern world uniquely wise. Our task goes beyond mere clarification of the old or reflexive reverence for the new. As with a friendship, we cherish the past but are not limited to its formulations or assumptions. Venerating the teachings of Maimonides does not negate that tomorrow, with the tools of modern study, a new Ram-bam may arise. The Judaism of relationship. Covenantal Judaism. Such is our creed, our dogma, our gift.

Covenantal Judaism holds aloft the ideal of dia-

logue with God, with other Jews of all move-ments, and with the non-Jewish world. In hold-ing each of these as sacred we stand in a unique position in Jewish life. Ritual is lan-guage, part of the way we speak to other Jews and to God. Learning, ancient and modern, is essential to sustain the eternal dialogue. “I have been given the power,” said the Kotzker Rebbe, “to resurrect the dead. But I choose a harder task — to resurrect the living!” Resurrec-tion of passion, of faith, of community requires not the touch of the Divine, but the touch of another human being.

As always, whatever I write is an invitation to dia-logue. What are your thoughts? Should we as a movement seek to change our name? What would you like to see? L'shalom,

Rabbi Charles L. Arian

If you are interested in helping out with a volunteer project, let me know. Right now, we need someone to lead us in our volun-teer efforts at the Gaither Road Manna food center for the needy. To be our group leader, you take about 45 minutes of training at Manna, and then put out an e-mail to our group when it’s our turn to help out. (We sort food donations one evening a month, as I remember. It takes about 2 hours.) If you’d like to be part of our group, or if you’d like to be our leader, just let me know. Thanks. We also have a chance to volunteer as substitute drivers for the Kosher Meals On Wheels program. This would be a “when it works for you” thing rather than an ongoing commitment. Please let me know if this might interest you. I would love to get an “Up-County Kosher meals on Wheels” program going eventually. Best wishes for a happy, healthy New Year!

Mike

Nat’ah karem is a phrase from the beloved prayer Eishet Chayil, taken from the biblical book of Proverbs. We re-envision this prayer today with appreciation for the hard-working, generous, family-oriented woman, who “plants a vineyard by her own labors” (Proverbs 31:7). We honor her productivity,

independence, creativity, and her orientation to a hopeful future with the 2016 Torah Fund pin/pendant. Women’s League’s support of the Torah Fund Campaign helps strengthen Conservative/Masorti Judaism throughout the world and enhances the Jewish community by recognizing and appreciating our diverse families.

SISTERHOOD BOOKCLUB: On Sunday, January 31, at 2:00 pm we will meet at Marcia Litwack’s house to

discuss All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. RSVP to Marcia at [email protected] and Alyce Ross at [email protected]. WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge.

Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, a National Book Award finalist, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times

Life & Learning

Rabbi Arian’s bi-weekly Bible class has spent the past three years looking at the weekly Haftarah, and our studies have added to our knowledge and appreciation

of these readings which follow the Torah reading every Shabbat. Now we turn to a different type of study: the weekly Torah portion with Rashi’s

commentary. Rashi (1040 - 1105) lived in Troyes, France and is considered the commentator par excellence in helping to explain the plain meaning of the text. His commentary is considered indispensable for students of all levels and his

lead to over 300 “supercommentaries,” meaning commentaries on Rashi’s commentary itself.

We will look at some selected verses along with Rashi’s commentary, and discover what question Rashi is trying to answer and what his understanding adds to our knowledge of the text.

The class will meet the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each calendar month right after evening minyan.
