Long Island Long Island AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY The American Legion Auxil- iary met on Dec. 7 for a Christmas pot luck dinner honoring their husbands and guests. Those at- tending were Margaret and Dale Vincent, Su and Paul Cox, Phyllis and Lynne Halderman, Shirley and Lloyd Tubbs, Hazel and Richard Ames, Verlene Schroder, Irma Lee and Eldon Gebhard and Wilma and Gordon Vahle. Following the dinner a short meeting was held to discuss pay- ment of our Christmas donations, purchase of poppies and future meetings. The next meeting will be Tuesday, March l at 2 p.m. to fill out annual reports for the District. Wilma Vahle announced the results of a polling of the members concerning the future of the unit. Most members did not want to surrender the charter and pledged to attend at least 3 meetings a year. The unit will review their options at the May meeting when election of officers is scheduled. The poppy crosses will also be checked and repaired if needed at that time. In previous years, the Auxiliary held a gift exchange for Christmas but this year members brought canned goods to be donated to a local food pantry. Verlene Schro- der volunteered to take the large box to the Caring Cupboard in Alma, Neb LONG ISLAND UNITED METHODIST WOMEN The Long Island United Meth- odist Women met Wednesday, Dec. l at the Long Island Church. President Connie K. Cox opened the meeting with a call to wor- ship from “Guidepost” magazine entitled 7 Cakes. The United Methodist Women’s Purpose was then read in unison by the mem- bership. Eleven members and 3 guests answered roll call with their favorite Christmas food. The minutes of the November meeting were read and approved as was the treasurer’s report. The 2011 slate of officers was presented as follows: Connie K. Cox-President, Charlene Ross- Vice President, Nyla Gebhard- Secretary, and Su Cox-Treasurer. Mission Coordinators nominated were Pat Hammond-Spiritual Growth, Connie K. Cox and Irma Lee Gebhard-co chairs for Education & Interpretation and Social Action, Connie Sue Cox, Irma Lee Gebhard, Nyla Gebhard and Wilma Vahle - Committee on Nominations. The slate was accepted and approved by ac- clamation. The Long Island United Meth- odist Church Christmas program will be held on Sunday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. The community is invited to attend. The members voted to send the Christmas donations as usual and to pay the district pledge to missions. It was decided that a Pancake Supper will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 16 and more de- tails will be discussed at the next meeting to be held on Wednesday, Feb.2. The January dinner will be held on the 9th as that will be the Sun- day that the Luctor Choir will en- tertain. Nyla Gebhard presented the Advent lesson following the business meeting. Phyllis Halderman and Irma Lee Gebhard served delicious refreshments which were en- joyed while the secret prayer sisters were revealed and gifts exchanged. LONG ISLAND COMMUNITY The community Christmas party was held Dec. 4th. A large crowd enjoyed pork sandwiches with beans, potatoes and des- serts courtesy of Steve Cox, the city council and the good cooks of Long Island. Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus paid a visit to pass out candy to the children.
