おしっこをするほんの小さな子供が、どうしてブ

リュッセルを代表する観光スポットになったので

しょう？諸説ありますが、そのうちのひとつをご

紹介すると、敵に包囲されたブリュッセルで、彼

が爆弾の導火線におしっこをかけて火を消し、

ブリュッセルの町を救った、というものです。観

光客の多くは、小便小僧を初めて見たとき、ま

ずその小ささに驚き、どうしてこんなに小さいも

のがこれほど有名になったのだろうと不思議に

思うようです。小便小僧はおそらく、ベルギーの

シュルレアリズムとユーモアをよく表しているもの

のひとつです。世界各国から贈られた1,000着

を誇るワードローブから、定期的に衣装を着替

えて披露しています。

楽器博物館

ロイヤルスクエアの隣にある楽器博物館（MIM）は

世界で最も多く楽器のコレクションを所有してい

る。ガラスと鋼鉄で建設された典型的なブリュッセ

ルアール・ヌーヴォ建築の建物で屋上にあるレス

トランとバーではブリュッセルの街並を見渡すこと

MANNEKEN PISKnee-high to a grasshopper, Manneken Pis has come from a simple drinking fountain to the status of Brussels’ symbol. But what’s the story behind the little peeing boy? No one knows for sure. One of the many legends tells that the little boy saved Brussels, as the city was under siege, by peeing on the fuse, attached to barrels of gunpowder, thus preventing the destruction of Brussels. Many tourists are sur-prised when they see the little boy for the first time. They wonder how something so small can be so famous. Perhaps this is one of the many examples of Belgian surrealism and humour. Manneken Pis regularly wears one of his 1000 colourful costumes, most of which have been offered by representatives of countries around the world.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MUSEUMConveniently located right next to Royal Square, the MIM owns one of the the largest collections of musical instruments in the world (8000). Located in the north of Flanders, Bruges emerg-es as a commercial city in the 12th century. Its historical centre is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Churches, civil mon-uments and houses were built around its numerous canals, which gives the city a medieval feel. Known as the Venice of the North, Bruges is renowned to be the birthplace of Flemish painting and has a long history of lace making.

は多くの観光客が３６６段の階段を登ってそこから見える素晴らしい景

観光地化されていない素顔のままのヨーロッパと出会える街。丘陵地

に囲まれ、ムーズ川La Meuseとその支流ウルト川L'Ourtheに抱かれた

町リエージュは古くからヨーロッパ各地の交易の中継地としてその名を

馳せた西ヨーロッパの十字路です。また、中・近世においては欧州屈指

の鉄砲の生産地として知られています。フランス語圏の中心地で、かつ

ては強大な権力を持つ司教領首都として隆盛をきわめた宗教都市でし

た。世界的な音楽家セザール・フランク、推理小説作家ジョルジュ・シム

ノンもこの町で生れています。現在はベルギー国内第４の都市。

聖バルテルミー教会

11世紀に建造の始まったロマネスク様式の建物。レニエ・ド・ユイが

12世紀に制作した真鍮製の洗礼盤が収蔵されています。「ベルギー

7つの傑作」の一つ。

リエージュ・ギマン駅

2000年から改装工事が始まり、2009年に完成した新駅舎。そのダイ

ナミックなデザインはスペイン人のカラトラバ(Calatrava)による。ブリ

ュッセルなど国内の各地から到着する列車の停車駅であるだけでな

く、パリやケルンとブリュッセルを結ぶ高速列車タリスも停車する国際

的な駅としてのふさわしい変貌をとげている。

君主司教宮殿

皇子司教の住んでいたところ。現在の建物は16世紀ルネサンス様式

のもので、南側のみ18世紀の再建。回廊の柱頭には奇妙な彫刻が施

されていますが、これはエラスムスの「痴愚神礼讃」に想を得たものとい

われます。現在は州政府庁舎、裁判所としても利用されています。

ブリュッセルの南東60kmに位置する、人口10万人の町ナミュール

は、ワロン地方の玄関口になっています。美しい2つの川が流れ

るこの町は、アルデンヌの森に囲まれた古城巡りの拠点にもなっ

ています。町の人たちがゆったり歩いていたり、カフェで談笑して

いたり、自然体で雰囲気の良い町。小さな美術館や博物館が散

在しているため、これを訪ね歩くのも一興です。

城砦

古代にも城砦があったと記されていますが、現在の城址は17世紀

のもの。全体で8haもある広大な庭園には、森林博物館や野外劇

場もあります。頂上から見た渓谷や街並みは絶景。ミニトレインに

乗って見学することもできます。

ギー・デルフォルジュ氏の香水アトリエ見学

国際コンクールで多くの賞に輝いた香水クリエイターのギー・デル

フォルジュ氏のアトリエが城砦内にある。香水調合についてのデ

モンストレーション見学の他、香水の購入ができます。

デュルビュイ DURBUY

Known as the smallest town on earth, Durbuy is also one of the pretiest. Only 90 minutes away from Brussels, The old medieval town dates mainly from the 17th century. Its pedestrian streets, wind-ing between the ancient houses, are narrow and cobbled. With its 500 inhabitants, Durbuy is a very pleasant holiday resort renowned for its excellent food.

9世紀に起源するデュルビュイ伯の城館（のちにル クセンブルグ伯の

城館に）、今は郷土資料館になって いる16世紀に建てられた穀物取

引所などがあります。人口の割に高級レストランやホテルも多く、本

格的 なアルデンヌ料理が楽しめます。このあたりはリュク サンブール

州。ウルト川はベルギーの南部を占めるアルデンヌ高地を刻んで流

れています。高度は500メー トルを越えませんが夏は涼しく、ベルギー

のみならず、 隣国のオランダやフランスの人たちにとっても、格好のリ

ゾート地として人気があります。

観光ミニトレイン

デュルビュイの入口ともいえる広場（Place aux Foires）を出発して、

丘の上の展望台まで行くことが出来るミニトレイン。（運行：週末と祝

日、7月と8月は毎日。大人4€/子供1.5€）

ジャム工房

デュルビュイの名物、タンポポを使ったジャムなどを作ってい

る有名店、コンフィチュリー・サンタムール。工房では、花や

果物のゼリー、伝統的な製法で作られるジャム、香り付けした

ヴィネガー、植物由来の食品などの製造過程が無料（ガイドな

し）で見学できる。場所は展望台のすぐ近く。

トピアリー公園

「世界で一番小さな町にある世界で一番大きなトピアリー公

園」、というのがキャッチフレーズ。10,000㎡の広大な敷地に

250以上の様々な形のトピアリーが作られ、中には樹齢120年を

超える樹木を使ったものもある。そして園内にあるカフェテリ

アからはデュルビュイの街が見渡される。大人4.5€/12歳以下

1€/6歳以下無料。トピアリーとは、樹木や低木を刈り込んで作

成される造形物。

漫画王国 KINGDOM OF COMICSベルギーの漫画には多くのヒーローがいます。タンタン、スピ

ルーとファンタジオ、ブレイクとモルティメール、マルスピラミ、

うした漫画の作者たちが、ヨーロッパの漫画文化の礎作りに寄

与し、現在でも若手漫画家たちにインスピレーションを与え続

けています。ブリュッセル市内に40ヶ所以上ある漫画の壁画も

見逃せません。

ベルギー漫画センター

数年の間で、この博物館はブリュッセルのメインとなるアトラク

ションのひとつになりました。毎年20万人以上が訪れ、4,000㎡を誇る館内の常設および特別展示を楽しみます。

In Belgium, you can find high quality plain chocolate such as tablets, as well as filled chocolates, known as “pralines”, which are one of Belgium’s most successful exports. Covered in white, milk or dark chocolate they have been delighting customers since the 1850s and today there are more than 400 dif-ferent pralines, manufactured by all sorts of chocolatiers from small artisan workshops, to huge mechanised factories. EASTEREaster is a Christian festival and holiday celebrating the resur-rection of Jesus Christ. In Belgium as well as in other countries of Christian influence, the legendary Easter Bunny traditionally hides eggs made of chocolate all around the house and the garden. On Easter Sunday, in the morn-ing, children go on an egg hunt through the house and the garden, (weather permitting), to find the chocolate eggs the Easter Bunny or the bells (depending on the tradition) left them. This year, Easter Sunday will be celebrated on April 5th.The day following Easter Sunday is always a bank holiday, during which most shops are closed.

The first boutique was opened in the Grand Place in Brussels, and is still today one of the most popular chocolate shops. There are also flagship stores on Avenue Louise and in Grand Sablon.

This success is partly due to Leonidas’ taste for decoration and arrangement in their shop windows. The brand offers a great variety of chocolate, so everyone can suit themselves. All their chocolates are still made in Brussels.

He started out with an apothecary shop, sell-ing therapeutic candies such as guimauves and dark chocolate tablets, but the brand eventually became one of the world’s best chocolatiers. Neuhaus also in-vented a filled chocolate candy known as « praline » in 1912.

Sold internationally, Galler has three shops in Brussels, where he of-fers chocolates and ice creams in summer. Galler is also famous for complementing chocolate and wine, an interesting innovation.

holders. Today, the headquar-ters are still on Rue royal where the first shop was established, although the production was moved to the Arsenal, where customers can learn about Mary’s story and even make their own chocolates.

His brand was named after himself. Since then, the brand has become the Louis Vuitton of chocolate. There are only 8 trappist beers in the world, 6 of which are Belgian. Look out for Westmalle, Westvleteren, chimay, Orval, Achel, and Rochefort if you want to sample a beer brewed by monks. Some special Belgian beers can go up to 12% alcohol content. Therefore, one must be careful when tasting these beers.
