Thailand's business world come together to battle it out at the

Thailand Finals of the World Corporate Golf Challenge

Feature

The inaugural World Corporate Golf Challenge Thailand Finals were held 17th March at Thana City Golf & Sports Club. Organised by the Golf and Events divisions of Diethelm Travel, 126 business people in 63 corporate teams took part.

A briefi ng by Tournament Director David Pettigrew, Director of Golf Diethelm Travel, outlined the rules and programme for the day. Boardrooms and Balance Sheets were replaced with talk of golf tactics as the teams headed off to their respective tees for a 10am shotgun start.

“The turnout for the Thailand Finals has been fantastic and the standard of golf has been very high. The World Corporate Golf Challenge provides a unique opportunity for executives to meet and network, while engaging in sporting competition,” commented Pettigrew.

World Corporate Golf Challenge Thailand Champions were announced at the Awards Dinner where organisers, Diethelm Travel, presented team Inzentive (Kenth Fredin and Michael Weinstein) with an all-expenses-paid trip to the World Finals in Simola, South Africa, 3 – 8 May 2011, where they will represent Thailand and have the chance to become World Champions.

Other prizes on the day were for 'Best Nett Score, Ladies', won by Suphida Onbanchong, and 'Best Nett Score, Men', won by Kenth Fredin. 'Best Gross Score, Ladies' was won by Suphida Onbanchong, and 'Best Gross Score, Men' by Sahaphan Lertbuntam. Nearest the pin on hole 8 was won by Teerasak

Mongkolpod and on hole 13 by Martin Hill. 'Best Stableford Points Score, Ladies' was won by Suphida Onbanchong, and 'Best Stableford Points Score, Men', was won by Kenth Fredin. Scores were calculated using better ball team stableford.

The World Corporate Golf Challenge is built on the principle of bringing the world of business together, evident at the Thailand Finals with top CEO's and senior managers from both the public and private sectors participating.

The championship-ready Greg Norman-designed course proved challenging with its many sand traps, streams and lakes. At par 72 (6,400 yards), the course is long and challenging with island greens on holes four and fi ve.

With an all-expenses-paid trip to the World Finals the main attraction, on Hole 8 Diethelm Travel off ered a 1,000,000 baht cash hole-in-one prize. All competitors were eligible and under the careful eye of adjudicators and organisers, after 126 attempts the prize remained unclaimed.

Following an exhilarating round of golf, participants were treated to some light entertainment before the Awards Dinner in the form of Noel Hunt and his trick golf show. A former European PGA Tour Professional, Hunt has performed his unique show in over 50 countries and at over 200 major PGA Tour events.

Sponsors of the 2011/12 Thailand Finals of the World Corporate Golf Challenge include the Sports Authority of Thailand, Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau and the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Offi cial suppliers include Golf of Thailand, Jet Airways, Lenôtre, Nivea Sun, Wilding Golf and Wine Connection. Media partners include Bloomberg Businessweek Thailand, Business Golf, Business Report Thailand, Newspaper Direct, Pocket Guide GOLF Thailand, and local partner British Chamber of Commerce Thailand.

Recipe

About Executive Chef Martin BowerExecutive Chef Martin Bower is originally from the UK where he trained at Stratford College for three years. From there he went to work in the kitchens of Executive Chef Michael Quinn at the Randolph Hotel in Oxford. Martin gained many of his skills in his 2 years there and discovered his style of cooking.

Martin has been in professional kitchens now for 15 years gaining experience all over the UK working in many 4 and 5 star properties within the Forte portfolio then later in his career Macdonald hotels and resorts.

Martin quickly moved through the ranks and got his fi rst Head Chef position at 25. Since then his career has gone from strength to strength, gaining accolades along the way such as rosette awards in many of the restaurants he worked in.

Martin says his style of cusine is classically British/Mediteranean.

After leaving the UK he spent 2 years in Melbourne, Australia before moving to Phuket.

"Melbourne was a great learning curve for me as the cusine there is so diverse and I learned many things as I worked with chefs from all over the world. This challenge is a great way to show my share of learning from all over the world and it refl ects well in the menu that I developed here at Brush."

ServingPlace the fondant at the top of the plate. 1.

Cut the 2-bone lamb rack in half and lean against the potato.2.

Put some goat's cheese on the top of the lamb loin along with fresh 3. popcorn. Place this under the grill to gratinate.

Place the lamb loin at the end of the plate. 4.

Put the pre-blanched vegetables into boiling water for 5 minutes then 5. toss them in olive oil and salt and pepper.

Arrange the baby vegetables around the plate.6.

Finally drizzle your red wine jus round the plate.7.

IngredientsThis recipe will provide 4 portions.

1 lamb rack•

1 lamb short loin•

2 large potatoes•

12 asparagus spears•

12 baby carrots•

100 gm goats cheese•

popcorn•

lamb stock •

red wine•

rosemary •

garlic •

shallots•

olive oil•

200 gm butter•

1 pint chicken stock•

MethodClean off any excess fat from the lamb and scrape the bones with the 1. back of a knife so they are clean.

Take off any excess fat or sinew from the lamb loin.2.

Place the lamb in a clean bowl. Chop garlic, rosemary and shallots and 3. add to lamb. Add olive oil so as to coat the meat; place in the fridge and allow to marinade.

Peel the potatoes using a round cutter, cutting the potato to achieve a 4. cylindrical shape and rounding off the edges.

In a non-stick oven proof frying pan, melt the butter and a little olive oil 5. with some rosemary and garlic, salt and pepper.

Make both ends of the potato golden brown.6.

Add 1 pint chicken stock and place in the oven at 180 degrees for 45 7. minutes or until potato is soft. (Cooking time will depend on the size of your potato, but you will want it about 4 cm in diameter.)

Peel both the asparagus and baby carrots. Blanch the carrots in boiling 8. salted water until 'al dente'. Do the same with asparagus and refresh in ice water to stop them from cooking further.

In a saucepan, fry any left over lamb trim and shallots along with 9. rosemary and garlic on high heat getting plenty of colour. Be careful not to burn.

Add one glass red wine and reduce by half then add the lamb stock. 10.

Roast Lamb Rack with goat's cheese and popcorn gratinated lamb loin

Reduce by half again until the sauce slightly coats the back of 11. a spoon.

In a saucepan with a lid add a little oil and butter and about 20 12. popcorn kernels and place the lid on. Listen to it pop being careful not to allow it to burn.

Take the lamb out of the fridge. Get a pan and hot seal the lamb 13. rack by cooking fat side down so as to render the fat. Place in the oven at 180 degrees (I cook mine medium rare so it takes about 8-10 minutes.) Leave to rest on one side. Seal off your lamb loin and cook to your preference. Allow for resting time it will still cook as it comes out the oven.

The Siam Supper Club is defi nitely an icon!! It screams the word. There are few places in the world that provoke such a sense of time and place.

Beautiful... no glorious jazz fi lling the few empty spaces. One of the most interesting collections of sepia black and whites remain true to this same time and place.

For when you're at The Siam Supper Club you are well and truly placed in a subtley lit and timbered comfort zone where a cocktail is still a cocktail damn it, the wines are big and the fabulous food reminds you of how things used to be. St. Patrick’s BallFeature

The date: Saturday March 26. The place: the Mövenpick Resort & Spa in Karon. The occasion: A glittering charity ball in the best champagne traditions from New York to Paris to London. Raising almost 2m Baht for the Life Home Project was the stated purpose (and achievement) of the event. Having a helluva craic [see footnote] was what the island’s notables (and a few outsiders) went to the St Patrick’s Ball for.

The craic: More or less free fl ow Moet, a splendid buff et, great company, suitably Irish entertainment and the chance to throw a whole bunch of unwanted Baht at such items as a Magnum of Champagne with Swarkovski Crystal, a diamond necklace set in white gold, two roundtrip tickets to Dublin and even a backstage meet and greet with Justin Bieber!

Craic /kræk/ As you’d expect, it seems no two people defi ne the word in the same way. Here are a few we like:

“It is the combination of the music, the drink…and trying to make headway with people of the opposite sex.”

“The particular sense of esprit produced by the confl uence of drink, romance and music.”

“An atmosphere of comfortable and pervasive conviviality, a complete absence of distrust in pleasant, relaxed and relaxing company…Heightened euphoria is not a necessary requirement.” [Ed: not sure about that last bit]

And fi nally, from Professor Eileen M. Trauth: “Craic is an intrinsic part of the culture of sociability that distinguishes the Irish workplace from those of other countries.”

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My fi rst feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of the Sukko spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, infl uenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.

Chilled out by the soothing background music, my mind was fi lled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional welcome (again from Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to fl oat away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on.

A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certifi ed Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is off ered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specifi c purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be.

I was pampered with the ‘All-Soother’ package, a 2 1/2 hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This four-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by a traditional Thai massage, the pressure applied gently but fi rmly. "Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?" my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm… perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. My last step, which came all too soon, was the Thai Herb Purifying Facial Treatment, using creams and herbs that left my face feeling smooth and glowing – and even looked good enough to eat!

Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fi tness opportunities,

Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specifi c herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association.

Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices.

“I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls.

Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market.

What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation off ering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.

Lemongrass HouseTo visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.

“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”

Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles.

“People are sensitive to diff erent scents at diff erent times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils.

Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.”

Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

The Royal Spa and Health Club

In the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace. With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and with the sweet fruity scents that fi ll the air, the being is enticed into a fl owing stillness of body and mind.

The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and Health Club off ers a distinctly personal experience.

Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a profound eff ect, stilling the mind and easing the body.

Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff , and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure.

All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house 'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then, the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided comprehensive and professional spa management, and development programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It truly off ers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts.

Right now The Royal Spa have 12 branches that are managed in resorts in Patong, Kata, Karon, Panwa, Ao Chalong and Phuket Town and you are welcome to experience our spas with us anytime. As a special for our 8th year anniversary, we off er 'BUY ONE GET ONE FREE' value.

People Profi le

Where are you from? I was born and bred in Kent in England. I joined KMPG and qualifi ed as a chartered accountant for my sins while in their Oxford offi ce, then went back-packing to South East Asia in 1988 to Bali then back through Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and India before returning to England. The trip was life changing. I realised there was an exciting world outside of Oxford and England.

So what did you do before you ended up in Phuket? While queuing up for my accountancy results to be published in The Times, I shared an umbrella with a man representing an international recruiting fi rm, who asked if I wanted to go and work in Papua New Guinea. So I got a book on PNG and decided to give it a go. I loved PNG. As a 25-year-old it was a sink or swim experience. After working for KPMG in PNG from aged 25-32, I went to their Parramatta offi ce in Australia where I took out Australian citizenship. I'm married to Pat, who's from Papua New Guinea.

When did you come to Phuket? I came to Phuket as Chief Financial Offi cer of Laguna Phuket in 2000. It was my fi rst time here. I wanted to work in a business that was big enough to provide a challenge, but small enough to make a diff erence. Laguna Phuket was the perfect fi t.

What were your fi rst impressions when you arrived? After six years in PNG I didn’t expect any diffi culties adapting to the local culture which, in fact, turned out to be quite the opposite. As an expatriate in Thailand you have to adapt to the culture and have to earn respect. There was also the language barrier. It was a tough but rewarding fi rst year.

How has the Laguna Phuket business has evolved? We were very much a resort owning company. Then property sales took off . In 2002-2008 we couldn't build as quickly as we could sell. But since the global meltdown in 2009 the division has become smaller and we're back to being a resort owner with property still being important, but less signifi cant than before.

What's the most important ingredient in running a company like Laguna Phuket? I fi rmly believe in creating a happy working environment. This has resulted in a stable management team which has been together for years. Having quality people in a teamwork environment is the main ingredient to fi nancial success.

What about the development of high end products such as the Banyan Tree properties? Around 2002 we developed our house and land products then took that one step further by introducing the Banyan Tree villas, which

are a popular investment and lifestyle product. We've taken the model to other regions, such as the Seychelles, Bintan and China. The villas concept is a popular model with 60 days use a year and good interest return rates.

What about future developments at Laguna Resort? I take a very active role in our Vietnam Laguna development. There are greenfi eld opportunities there. By getting involved I hope to create opportunities for the people working at Laguna Phuket to expand their own horizons.

You've sold off two hotels lately? Is that it? That's it. From a company perspective we've been too Thailand and Phuket heavy; with the funds raised from these sales we can now diversify overseas options.

How do you evaluate success? I tend not to. I'm goal-oriented and results driven. Once I achieve a goal I move to the next one.

Where do you live and what sort of car do you drive? I live in Laguna Village. It's a great communal environment, which is what we wanted. I drive a nine-year-old Honda CRV (Laughs). Image is not very important to me. The car has served me well over the years. It's nice to be below the radar in this position.

So what do you do in your free time? I spend it with my family and playing sport. I play in the Laguna Cricket Team as a batsman/bowler in the Phuket league and I fi t in a round of golf whenever time permits. I also travel as much as I can for pleasure – within the region, Europe and Australia, mainly.

You're well known for your love of all sports, particularly football and cricket. What football team do you support these days? I still support my beloved Gillingham Football Club and Kent Country Cricket Club – my local teams that I grew up with. Unfortunately, just like the English national teams, they bring me little success.

What charities do you support? I channel my charitable contribution through Laguna, which supports many charities. I'm proud of what we've done in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) area. As a large company in Phuket, I strongly believe we have a responsibility to the local community.

Where are you heading personally in the future? I'm here for the long haul. The longer you're here, the harder it is to leave.

The Kata Karon Hotels Business Association – a committee group representing 40 or more hotels / resorts working in partnership with the Municipality are pulling together for a better future. Plans involved are redesigning sidewalks /communal areas improving the overall destination. New marketing plans are also now being implemented. An identity logo has been developed symbolizing the three beaches of Kata Noi, Kata and Karon with the strap line “Heaven on Earth”. To support this programme a promotional video has been produced by Helicam Co Ltd (supported and sponsored by CIMB Thai Bank) that will be available on many hotel websites and TV channels. One million postcards have been printed and are being distributed throughout vendors throughout Kata Karon. The main inspirational people behind these plans have been Khun Somchai Silapanont from the Marina Phuket Resort andKhun Warayut Horkaew from The Sawasdee Village working in conjunction with Helicam Co Ltd. The aim of the programme is to reinforce Kata Karon as the favourite family destination.

Introduction:Many investors do not consider, or are not advised on the opportunities available for them through investment under the Board of Investment (“BOI”) in Thailand. In order to learn more about the opportunities, consultation may be made directly with the BOI, but for more complex businesses, legal advice would be recommended. Foreign investment in business activities in Thailand is principally governed by the Foreign Business Act (1999) which has the eff ect of restricting business activity in Thailand by foreigners. It divides business activities into three categories of activities and places restrictions of various degrees of severity on foreign ownership depending on which category it falls within. For some business activities it may be possible to set up a majority foreign owned company by applying to the authorities for an Alien Business License (please see our article in the April edition of Shop Window on Lifestyle, “Legal Restrictions on Foreign Businesses in Thailand”).

Another alternative is to apply for Board of Investment (“BOI”) status which is a governmental scheme granting many incentives to foreign companies carrying out certain business activities in Thailand. The BOI is the principal government agency responsible to support and encourage investment in Thailand, the government off ers to all investors privileges in various forms including taxes and duties exemption or reduction, permissions, guarantees and protection measures in specifi c provincial areas as further set out below.

Promoted Investors:The BOI is governed by the Investment Promotion Act (1991). The BOI is authorized to designate business activities eligible for promotion and to grant incentives to investment projects that meet its policies and criteria. The investor must be a limited company, foundation or cooperative organized under Thai law, to be entitled to investment incentives from the BOI. A joint venture company established under Thai law, partly or wholly owned by foreign investors, may also able to obtain the investment incentives from the BOI. The level of incentives to be granted to an investor will be considered by the BOI which has considerable discretion in setting the scope of the investment (in terms of investment capital, but not registered capital) and the type of incentives or benefi ts to be granted on a project by project basis.

Priority Activities:There are fi ve major categories that the BOI has set out as priority activities for investment promotion, namely: (i) agriculture and agricultural products; (ii) direct involvement in technological and human resource development; (iii) public utilities and infrastructure; (iv) environmental protection and conservation; and (v) other targeted industries which are specifi cally listed. These types of projects may be entitled to privileges of tax exemption, exemption from import duty on machinery regardless of location and other privileges according to the project location and other particulars of the project as determined by the BOI.

Tax Incentives:The BOI may grant tax incentives to certain promoted investment projects, some examples of which include:

Exemption or reduction of import duties on imported machinery. • Exemption of import duties on imported raw and essential materials • used in the manufacturing of export products.Exemption from corporate income taxes in a limited period.• To exclude dividends derived by promoted enterprises from corporate • income tax on taxable income during the period of exemption.Reduction of corporate income tax in a limited period.• Special deduction for certain expenses.•

Further Benefi ts of the BOI Status:Current BOI incentives which may be provided for promoted investments regardless of location include:

Permission to bring foreign nationals to undertake investment • feasibility studies.

Permission to bring in foreign technicians and experts to work on • promoted projects.Permission to own land to carry out promoted activities.• Permission to take out or remit foreign currency abroad.•

Promotion Zones:Each of Thailand’s 76 provinces is classifi ed under one of three investment zones based on the level of income and infrastructure in each province. Zone 1 covers six central provinces with high income levels and good infrastructure. Zone 2 covers 12 provinces including Phuket and Zone 3 covers the remaining 58 provinces with low income levels and less developed infrastructure.

Application Procedures:The procedure starts with an investor submitting the application for promotion to BOI, who will then consider and determine whether to approve the proposed project. If the project is approved, the BOI will issue a promotion certifi cate. The process of application procedures may take approximately 6 to 7 months from submission of the application to receipt of the promotion certifi cate from the BOI.It is possible for a new investor to submit the application before establishing a legal entity under Thai laws. However, after the proposed project has been approved, the new investor must incorporate the entity and obtain the promotion certifi cate within six months.

Conclusion:For a foreign investor in business activities in Thailand a BOI status is an interesting way of conducting business in the Kingdom of Thailand due to the benefi ts such as tax exemptions, working permissions, visa and the right to own the interest in land. But whilst it may be possible for a foreign investor to apply for an Alien Business License for a BOI status, success is underpinned by preparedness and understanding, and an acceptance of the timelines involved in making the process work for your business.

Phromthep Cape (Laem Phromthep):This is the most popular and largest of all the view points. The area has been developed to off er extensive views over the sea and there are walking paths from the cliff s to the water's edge for the adventurous. The sunsets are absolutely breathtaking and never the same two days running. If you are romantically inclined this is the place to come in the evenings and hold hands as the setting sun paints the evening skies in towering kaleidoscopes of light and shade.

On top of Promthep Cape is a very pretty structure, the Kanchanaphisek Lighthouse which doubles as a museum. It was constructed in 1996. If you want to check the times of sunsets, ring the Phuket Meteorological & Radio Station on +66 (0)76 211494.

Useful info : Things to do in Phuket

If you are looking for a change from the beach, why not check out the views from Phuket's hilltop view points? You will experience magnifi cent vistas, cool breezes and most view points have refreshments available. Don't forget your camera.

Khao Kad 360° Viewpoint:Khao Kad off ers wonderful views of the Andaman Sea beaches and neighbouring islands from a diff erent perspective – from Cape Panwa in Vichit district. Sunsets are on a par with Promthep. Visitors are faced with a stiff climb up 138 steps. Once there the fresh breezes and tranquil surroundings are a suffi cient reward. The viewpoint has good parking facilities and services.

Rang Hill: Rang Hill lies to the northwest of Phuket City. The hilltop has been landscaped into a park and fi tness facilities are off ered. A winding tree-lined road takes you right to the summit where a sala off ers shade during the day. Once there you can enjoy views of the city and beaches on the south and southwest of the island. Try a visit at night when the lights of the city are like a million diamonds scattered on night blue silk.

Windmill View Point: As the name would suggest this hilltop boasts a modern windmill – the only one on the island. It can be found on the south of Phuket between Nai Harn and Promthep. This isolated spot off ers superb views of the tiny Ya Nui Beach and the main Nai Harn Beach. There are always boats moored off both beaches and in December the anchorages really come alive as the Phuket King's Cup Regatta gets under way.

How to get there: Phromthep Cape is a headland on the extreme southern end of Phuket about 19 kilometres from Phuket City. You can drive there via Chalong Junction along Highway 4024 to Rawai Beach, and then follow the signs for 2 kilometres.

How to get there: Take Sakdidet Road as far as Baan Muang Thong (Muang Thong Village) or follow the signs to Makham Bay and turn right just before arriving at Panwa Cape. The turning is well signposted.

Karon Viewpoint:Sometimes referred to as the Three Bay Viewpoint. View point is located between Nai Harn and Kata noi Beaches. This is a very tastefully developed facility with a Thai-style sala, which off ers superb views on several levels. From here Kata Noi, Kata and Karon beaches can be seen and out to sea is Koh Poo Island. It is one of the island's best views.

How to get there: Kata Viewpoint is located along the road between Kata Beach and Nai Harn Beach, just 5 kilometers from Kata Beach.

How to get there: Drive from Nai Harn Beach towards the highest hilltop and take the fi rst road on the right. You will spot the windmill on your right hand side.

Asia Pacifi c airlines servicing Phuket fi gure prominently in the latest Australian based Centre For Asia Pacifi c Aviation [CAPA] survey of 'hottest' airlines, underlining the island’s continually growing reputation as a primary inbound tourist destination.

Leading the bunch is AirAsia, the world’s lowest cost producer of airline seat kilometres (ASKS: an industry measure capturing the total passenger fl ight capacity). It's described by CAPA as a “mouth watering airline to watch for airports, suppliers and competitor airlines in 2011”. AirAsia X, the long haul version, is also growing with it being granted rights by the Malaysian government to 36 destinations and already expanded to cities like Tehran, Iran; Tokyo, Japan; several Chinese cities; Paris, France; Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; Sydney, Australia and Christchurch, New Zealand. An application to fl y to New York City has also been lodged.

Jetstar, the Qantas low cost carrier (LCC), is described by CAPA as a “growing jewel in the Qantas crown.” It fl ies to Phuket from Adelaide, Darwin, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Perth, Cairns, Hobart, Sydney, Canberra and Lauceston in Australia, boosting the island’s low season tourist numbers during the Australian winter.

Virgin Blue is Australia’s second largest airline and is undergoing a radical overhaul into a more corporate entity under the new leadership of John Borgetti, a former Qantas senior executive. Launched in 2000 it has been transformed to become a hybrid LCC targeting higher yielding corporate traffi c, according to CAPA. It will be an interesting airline to watch from Phuket’s perspective, as the island is defi nitely not a corporate destination, being mainly tourist traffi c. Virgin Blue’s V Australia long haul service stopped in February, but direct fl ights from Perth on Pacifi c Blue, another LCC, maintain its links with Phuket.

Tiger Airways from Singapore is one of the most interesting airlines to watch in relation to Phuket. It's going through a tortuous joint venture process to form Thai Tiger Airlines with Thai Airways International that is caught in political intrigue. It's one of the lower cost operators in Asia Pacifi c and, according to CAPA, has the potential to become one of the three large non-fl ag carrier operations, along with AirAsia and Jetstar.

Korean Air is, a well established 'legacy' carrier, is undergoing record traffi c levels and is in expansion mode, so Phuket should fi gure in its plans given the large number of Korean tourists, especially honeymooners, who travel to the island. Malaysian Airlines is in the same category, with rapid growth predicted. It's one of the lowest cost commercial airlines fl ying into Phuket.

These are just the main airlines identifi ed by CAPA on its 'hottest' list, but there are many other excellent airlines servicing the island from other regions that also make the list. For example in the European section, CAPA names Aerofl ot from Moscow as a leading voice in consolidation of the Russian airline industry. Aerofl ot fl ies thousands of Russians to Phuket every year. In fact, many local business people have been heard to remark in recent times, “Thank God for the Russians!”

Others in this group include Air Berlin, the largest single carrier servicing Phuket with international fl ights, which is a major charter and commercial

carrier. From the Middle East, Qatar Airways, one of the most rapidly expanding airlines in the world, opened fl ights from its Doha base directly to Phuket via Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in late 2010 and China Hainan Airlines, a growing southern China airline, also started direct fl ights via Beijing. It's pursuing a global expansion strategy, of which Phuket is part.

Outside of these 'hottest list' airlines, other major carriers servicing Phuket include SilkAir from Singapore; Asiana Airlines, South Korea; Dragonair from Hong Kong; Condor, from Europe; Firefl y from Malaysia and TUIfl y, a charter from Sweden.

Emirates Challenges

The latest global top 25 airline rankings in March, 2011 placed Thai Airways at 21st, up one place from 22nd in March, 2010, but it's the rise and rise of Emirates from Dubai that is the most notable change.

Emirates are now the third ranked airline, up one from last year, behind Delta (1) and American Airlines (2). In 2009 it was seventh in overall rankings, but No 1 for international passengers fl own.

The important point is that Emirates has no domestic market, whereas the top two ranked airlines have huge domestic markets to rely on. Another interesting point is Southwest Airlines, the original low cost carrier, maintaining its 5th ranking and Ryanair, the trail blazer LCC in Europe, leaping from 20th to 16th place. Turkish Airlines went from no ranking in 2010 to 24th in March.

Star Alliance, led by Lufthansa, United Airlines, Continental, Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways was ranked the top alliance, growing a very large 10.6% with the addition of several new carriers, taking its share of global airline capacity to 26.1%. However, unaligned airlines still account for more capacity at 27.9%. This grouping includes all of the Middle Eastern (ME)airlines, including Emirates, and the Virgin Group, which appears to be forging relationships with ME airlines and others to create a fourth alliance.

Oneworld, led by British Airways, American Airlines, Cathay and Qantas have 14.2% share and SkyTeam, led by Air France/KLM, Aerofl ot, Alitalia, Delta and Korean Air, have 15.8%.

Infertilitynew options available in Phuket

Useful info

We've all heard of the 'test tube baby' and essentially couples consider a test tube baby because of infertility, impotency or hormonal imbalances, plus other reasons. The fi rst test tube success was back in the very early 1980s and developments have moved ahead quickly. Today, infertility treatment is easily available to many, and also has raised many ethical issues.

Fertility treatment started with in vitro fertilization, or IVF where the female egg is surgically removed, mixed with sperm, checked by the specialists and if fertilized, placed back into the woman’s uterus. From here, normal pregnancy follows.

If you think that you and your partner are having diffi culty becoming pregnant, consider seeking the assistance of a

qualifi ed physician, as there are several types of safe and eff ective treatments available today. Appropriate treatment is

highly individual and may range from the simple medical advice to the complex, high-tech therapies like IVF or IntraCytoplastic Sperm Injection (ICSI).

According to Dr Manop, a Gynaecologic Oncologist at Phuket International Hospital and the fi rst doctor in Phuket to do high-tech fertility treatments through the newly opened Phuket International Safe Fertility and PGD Center, “Couples are considered to be infertile if they have not conceived within 1 year of trying. With Assisted Reproductive Technology about 40-50% of our clients go on to have a successful pregnancy and childbirth after the fi rst cycle, and after three cycles the success rate is 80%”.

Overseas couples are coming to Phuket for fertility treatment because of the success rates and the cost, which can be prohibitive or even illegal in some countries. The development of several high-quality medical facilities has helped Phuket to become a destination of choice for those who wish to combine world-class medical care with a relaxing holiday. While success is not guaranteed, couples may be putting themselves in a better position of getting pregnant while away from everyday stressors. If the holiday is timed well, couples only need to stay in Thailand

Inability to conceive a child is often suff ered in silence and can be both frustrating and depressing for parents. Yet, it's fairly common and The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 10% of couples experience some form of infertility problem. On a worldwide scale, this means that 50-80 million people suff er from infertility.

for about 15 days for treatment, and then return home to follow up with their local obstetrician.

Assisted Reproductive Technology options that have now been made available to both locals and tourists through Phuket International Safe Fertility and PGD Center not only include IVF. In addition, there is Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), a technique developed in Belgium by Gianpiero Palermo around 1991, and now widely used in fertility clinics around the world. With ICSI, the embryologist surgically inserts one healthy sperm into each egg. This is done by carefully perforating the membrane of the egg with a glass pipette containing the sperm and requires extremely high level of skills and experience. As only one sperm is needed per egg to create an embryo, it enables men with a low sperm count to father biological children. It is estimated that up to 40% of cases of infertility are due to problems with the quality and quantity of sperm.

If a male parner has no sperm in his semen, Percutaneous Sperm Aspiration (PESA) is usually the fi rst treatment option suggested. It is relatively painless, requires no surgical intervention and

has high retrieval rates (80-90%). A fi ne needle is inserted through the scrotum into the epididymis from which fl uid is gently removed, which is then analyzed for sperm content and motility.

Finally, and possibly the most controversial, treatment is Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD). Repeated pregnancy loss or miscarriage is frequently due to genetic problems. This is a diffi cult and emotionally draining experience, but fortunately couples have new options available, including PGD, which involves the genetic investigation of early stage embryos that have been produced through IVF or ICSI. PGD allows the embryologist to determine the chromosomal make-up as well as sex of any given embryo, and then select those that are most suitable before transferring them into the uterus. PGD is known as the most reliable technique for gender selection with an accuracy rate of more than 99%. PGD is illegal in some countries, and the ability of embryologist to determine the sex of babies prior to birth will continue to raise the many ethical and religious issues associated with it.
