Studies conducted elsewhere have shown that many scholars lacked knowledge and skill in that field. Moreover, there is deterioration of the quality of Data Collection and Analysis competences amongst the younger generation of scholars. Many of the scholars are poor in the field mainly because they did not have a chance to undertake a formal training in Data Collection and Analysis. This problem has deprived them the opportunity to contribute in the production of new knowledge about their countries on the solutions to problems which they are facing. It is in view of the above that the Centre for Foreign Relations (CFR) in Tanzania has decided to conduct a short course on Data Collection and Analysis. 1.0 INTRODUCTIONData Collection and Analysis have been a problem amongst young researchers and academicians in Tanzania (presumably in other African countries as well). Studies conducted elsewhere have shown that many scholars lacked knowledge and skill in that field. Moreover, there is deterioration of the quality of Data Collection and Analysis competences amongst the younger generation of scholars. Many of the scholars are poor in the field mainly because they did not have a chance to undertake a formal training in Data Collection and Analysis. This problem has deprived them the opportunity to contribute in the production of new knowledge about their countries on the solutions to problems which they are facing. It is in view of the above that the Centre for Foreign Relations (CFR) in Tanzania has decided to conduct a short course on Data Collection and Analysis.

The Centre for Foreign Relations is an institution with a long track record in conducting training, research and publication, consultancy and short courses in the fields of International Relations and Diplomacy, Economic Diplomacy, Languages (Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish and French), Communication Skills and Strategic Studies. Due to the importance (bearing in mind the publish or perish principle among academicians) and the high demand for the course, the Centre for Foreign Relations is organizing a one week intensive course on Data Collection and Analysis.1.2 Objectives This training seeks to build capacity and impart knowledge and skills on Data Collection and Analysis to all those engaged in various types of research and projects. Furthermore, the training will enable the participants to collect and analyze data using STATA and SPSS softwares, and hence handle competitively and competently their daily activities and duties in their community and at their work places.

1.3 Target group

This course is designed for all research practitioners, academicians, PhD students, project officers/managers, operation officers/managers, marketing officers/managers, trade officers, and university students who are doing research on their undergraduate and postgraduate studies, as well as all those who wish to develop knowledge and skills on research.1.4 Expected output

At the end of this course participants will be equipped with tactics, fundamental art, techniques, knowledge and analytical skills of collecting and analyzing data. In addition, participants will be able to differentiate between quantitative and qualitative research and data collection and their use, triangulate, use of ICT and software in Research, conduct meta-analysis significance testing, regression, collecting occupational information and multi-level modeling. 2.0 STUDY MODULES: Module One: State of the Data Qualitative and Quantitative Data; Measurement; Development and Refinement of Scaling Measurements; Criteria for Good Measurement; Attitude Measurement in Business Research; and Techniques for Measuring Attitudes.Module Two: Instrument of Data Collection Types of Data; Source of Data; and Validity and Reliability of Data Collection Instruments.Module Three: Data Analysis Advanced Multivariate Statistical Methods; Smoothing and other Forecasting Techniques; Time Series Decomposition and Time Series Regression; and Factor Analysis.3.0 DELIVERY/METHOD OF TRAINING

Duration: Five (5) days (full time, from 9.00hr 15.45hrs).Delivery: Lectures, discussions, case studies and simulations.Assessment: Non-examinable.

Award: Certificate of attendance.Fees: Tsh. 550,000/= only, which covers Breakfast, lunch, Training Materials and stationeries
